Things Aren’t What They Seem Sometimes
When you watch this video, you will feel upset that this happened in our community.
Police just tasered this protester in Bay Ridge Brooklyn #BlackLivesMatter [email protected] for licensing pic.twitter.com/Zg5DwWlnag
— @SCOOTERCASTER (FNTV) (@ScooterCasterNY) July 12, 2020
I didn’t share it yesterday because it was a just a short video clip. Why were the police so angry?
While the man pretended to be a peaceful protester, it’s clear the police are upset.
Social media began the trial for the police officers. One person offered: “This is Assault in the Second Degree by the cops. Tasered and assaulted. Mandatory minimum 2 years prison. Maximum 7. They won’t even get disciplined.”
The police were in the wrong because people judged the whole situation by a tiny clip.
No one asked, “What happened before that?”
Then we saw this video this morning:
Hi. Some clarification. The man being tased had just rocketed a construction helmet into the crowd of Pro Cop ralliers. He hit an older lady in the face, not sure if her nose was broken but she went down hard and there was a lot of blood from her nose, cop was responding. Here… pic.twitter.com/Nnijx38oV8
— CryptoThousandaire (@HectorRamNoodle) July 13, 2020
Most annoying in the video is that the police are speaking with the man and telling him not to throw the helmet. Yet, he still did – while the police watched him. Was that being peaceful?
Is this enough of a reason to taze the man? We don’t know what went on before these two bits of video, but the 68th Precinct officers saw they weren’t able to talk this man down.
I wish Councilman Brannan wasn’t so quick to judge the police department. He should know better as he isn’t a new leader.

Update: August 11, 2020: A man who was recently involved in an incident was found because “he shouted in another cop’s ear with a bullhorn at a subsequent protest, in Bay Ridge.” See story about Derrick Ingram here.

July 13, 2020Not So Peaceful Protest in Bay Ridge
Yesterday was a mess in Bay Ridge.
The rally for the NYPD was at 6 pm. It was winding down by 7:30 pm.
Yet, people who didn’t have anything better to do were still hanging around at 8:30 pm. Some were there to film the action of those they invited to the counter protest.
The Black Lives Matter movement isn’t about what you saw here. Yesterday’s actions were about two political groups clashing. Divisive organizers think people don’t realize what’s going on….it’s become a real problem for our community.
Sadly, there some people who were actually there for the BLM movement. A police officer noted that a young man stood in front of them the whole time and spoke softly – not yelling at the police officers.
Counter protesters stayed in the area after the protest and this happened on the corner of Senator Street:
“Peaceful BLM Protestors” setting fires in Bay Ridge and throwing trash cans into the street
Silence frkm @JustinBrannan, @Sen_Gounardes, @RepMaxRose pic.twitter.com/kYeVrYwfUw— NYCResident (@resident_nyc) July 13, 2020
Lighting fires on the streets is enjoyment for some people. Others stood around and took pictures for Instagram as the police were trying to get them to leave the area at around 12:00 am.

July 13, 2020Bay Ridge Organizers Hurt the BLM Movement
Many white people want to help the Black Lives Matter movement. Most have good intentions, but often people are pushing their own political agendas. Many people who attended did so for the right reasons, but they didn’t know that organizers had a different plan for this rally.
One of the things black people have asked white people to do is to listen. On Saturday, organizers in our area weren’t happy that there was a low turnout of support for the Black Lives Matter s rally in Dyker Heights. They went online and used #Antifa to invite them to today’s event. Yes, I saw you.
Antifa changes an event quickly because they are there for their own agenda. Organizers wrote that the KKK had organized the rally for the police, so naturally Antifa was mad. (No one likes the KKK except the KKK).
Here they are kicking the police:
Happening now in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. People are kicking the cops, but the cops are not allowed to respond due to Bill Deblasio’s order. pic.twitter.com/ViqmCT4aPk
— Joel Fischer (@JFNYC1) July 13, 2020
We’ve seen many other BLM protests in this area – all of them were peaceful. Why? Because the organizers were there for the right reason and made sure that was clear to everyone. In Manhattan when there was looting, black people went out of their way to remind people to be peaceful.
Calling for people to come and be violent in our community, means you don’t care. It’s as dangerous as white supremacists. Many people who attended didn’t care about Black Lives because they were here to fight the KKK and the police.
Bay Ridge is a community with a lot of families. People should feel comfortable to bring their child to a rally, but now they can’t because violence is the objective.
Where were the organizers when those they invited were acting out? Where were the organizers when protesters started throwing eggs? Probably laughing because this is a joke to them.
Picture shared by Marko K.
At the end of the day, who was left with the invited guests? The police.
Today’s rally didn’t help advance BLM. No change was made in policy or in creating a more equitable city. Before “organizing” think about if you are helping black children. This movement isn’t about you and people have worked too hard for setbacks like this.

And now BLM is burning the American flag. pic.twitter.com/ZJKYh73y7m

The event is coming to an end. People on both sides were pushing people on the opposite side. But sadly, the counterprotesters brought eggs and hit a police officer with them. That’s just low and not what the BLM movement is about.

July 11, 2020Seven Days Later, Brannan Responded To “Death to America” Video From 7/1 Rally
On July 1st, Palestinians in Bay Ridge held a Day of Rage. This was not the first time they had this rally, but it was a little later this year due to the pandemic. This year there were a lot of recordings of the event.
On July 3rd, this video was shared widely on social media. I was stunned. I never heard anyone say anything like that in Bay Ridge.
People tweeted Brannan and other leaders about the video. On Facebook, people tagged the politicians. None of the politicians said anything until today.
Today, July 11th, Councilman Justin Brannan made a statement in a private group on Facebook about the video – this is the first time he has said anything about it.
![]()
Why would it take a week for Councilman Brannan to speak out about this? When someone asked Brannan about that, he said:
![]()
A statement was made to the press? I didn’t find it online, but maybe he just gave it to them today. Brannan spends many hours online, it’s surprising he did not make this statement on his social media accounts.
Justin Brannan didn’t share this statement on social media – not Twitter or his Facebook page. Tonight on Twitter someone questioned why he didn’t speak out about that comment and Brannan sent the same overdue statement – see here
Even stranger, Brannan spoke about Arab-American leaders. I’m surprised that the person who applied for the permit for the event didn’t think the community deserved to hear from him or her.
Years ago, before Justin Brannan was elected, I noticed that he was the one who spoke out first about something happening. Now he’s one of the last. Most times when information is shared is when residents are sharing it with each other.
Senator Andrew Gounardes represents the area and he was also silent on the topic.
When someone chants, “Death to America” in Bay Ridge, I would expect anyone who was elected to represent the area to speak up and say it wasn’t acceptable…..right away.
Update: This evening, Councilman Brannan spoke out about the march for the NYPD held in Dyker Heights today because it involved Republicans. See here
Brannan wanted to blame the Republicans politicians for a group of men at the march acting inappropriately towards the counter protesters. News here

Cyclists took to the streets tonight for a Black Lives Matter ride in Bay Ridge.
They must have wanted clear streets to ride their bike. They rode up 4th Avenue.
While “Black Lives Matter” and “Whose Streets? Our Streets” are good chants, some of the other chants in residential areas are not appreciated by families.
I haven’t seen any cycling groups advocating for policy changes on behalf of Black Lives Matter.

July 11, 2020Restaurant Owners Redesign Their Setups
![]()
Schnitzel Haus and other restaurants had to revise their outdoor seating. Their first setup looked great!
NYC needs to be on the side of these business owners so they can continue to stay in business!
NYC should have been clear from the start about what they wanted for these temporary cafes. Providing business owners with a plan that everyone could use to build these setups would have made them look consistent and be safe.
There really should be a rule that allows a restaurant owner to take the car space right before their restaurant to provide a bit more protection to the setup.

The socialist group in Bay Ridge, BRSJ stated that this march signaled it was a KKK event because there were three elevens.
Antagonistically, protesters stood on the side of the street and chanted “Go home racists” or called people they didn’t know ‘white supremacists.’ #NotGood (More callouts heard – see here) That’s not helping. This doesn’t help the BLM movement.
BRSJ stated that the timing of the event on July 11th at 11:00 am and that the march was set for 11 blocks, were three elevens which signified the KKK. Many people realized this was a way to fear monger the community, so they wouldn’t support the NYPD march. (UPDATE: The socialists didn’t explain that the KKK number is 33 – the three 11’s add up to 33 and that is a known KKK number – see here) The date and time may have been a coincidence, but the 11 blocks are because that’s all there is from 75th to 86th Street.
The police sectioned off the protesters. See here When people passed the protesters, some men supporting the NYPD march were angered by their signs and chants. Ugly words were exchanged. (WARNING FOWL LANGUAGE: ugliness here) The NYPD supporters from the community didn’t see most of this until they saw the news that evening. This is what the event looked like to the people in the front of the march:
Rally to back the blue today in Bay Ridge @News12BK pic.twitter.com/y8KtgA8Suq
— Zhané Caldwell (@ZhaneCaldwell) July 11, 2020
Some of the counter protesters were worried that those who supported the police would take photos and would be able to identify them. See here Five people were wearing helmets, goggles, face coverings and some had knee and arm supports (seen below).
It’s a bit much to show up in a neighborhood dressed like Antifa.
It’s obvious this wasn’t the sewing club that showed up in helmets to counter protest. NYPD supporters thought the helmeted people were there to have a brawl.
![]()
The counter protesters weren’t seen as peaceful protesters, especially the person in the red scarf.
WARNING: This video is not work or family safe (wear headphones as the language is foul)
I’ve lived in the neighborhoods next to Dyker Heights my whole life and I have never heard of any KKK activity. My friends live there now and never heard this either. This person wrote about the area on Twitter today:
A lot of false info on #Bensonhurst & #BayRidge
Moved there when I was 13 & not once did my family & I ever face racism
Do racist ppl live there? Yes. But racist ppl live in many different neighborhoods
But those 2 neighborhoods are diverse. Dont stereotype based on a few ppl
— Chow (@SimplyChow) July 12, 2020
We couldn’t find anyone who heard of the ‘three elevens’ before. K is the eleventh letter of the alphabet, but there was very little information online about three K’s. But this can’t be left out as it’s part of the history of this event.
7/11 at a Blue Lives rally, counter protesters in support of BLM movement and victims of police brutality were atta Jed by local residents. Womxn where told to “go get raped.” People were cursed, kicked and assaulted. This is white supremacy in Amerikka pic.twitter.com/mmTK7AwUxn
— Fight Back Bay Ridge (@FightBackBR) July 11, 2020
Some of the people who marched on 13th Avenue this morning also marched in the BLM protest in Bay Ridge a few weeks ago. It isn’t BLM OR the police for Dyker Heights. A Dyker resident said it best: “Any sensible person thinks what happened to George Floyd was nothing short of murder.”
The counter protest was political for the left as well. When I looked for this event on Facebook, it was posted to a group called “New Yorkers Against Donald Trump.” It did not appear on Black Lives Matter group until much later in the week. Was this about black lives or Trump?
![]()
Bay Ridge for Social Justice is also counter protesting the event to support the NYPD in Bay Ridge tomorrow. That event is not run by Blue Lives Matter and it’s on July 12th in the evening….so how will they relate it to the KKK?

At the end of the day, no one was seriously hurt (this journalist was injured and her camera was too), the police know that people appreciate them and black lives matter. Black lives will always matter because black children live here and we want them to have a good life without oppression.
Update: In the evening, Councilman Brannan came out against the Republican politicians, who participated in the march because of inappropriate remarks made by people at the march. See here People realize why Brannan lashed out. See here
Update 7/12: I didn’t hear about the reporter who was injured/had her camera destroyed until today. She followed a resident and he grabbed her camera. Watch how fast police on bikes are there to help!
