July 16, 2020Bay Ridge Has a Socialist Assemblywoman
Most people don’t realize that something big happened in politics in Bay Ridge today.
See that small section of Bay Ridge in the map below:
![]()
That area is now represented by a Socialist.
The people in District 51 (which includes a small part of Bay Ridge) ousted Felix Ortiz and voted for Marcela Mitaynes. On election night it didn’t look that way, but the 5,000 absentee votes turned the tables. Story here.
Felix Ortiz was in office for 26 years. Last August, Ortiz didn’t know 80K was missing from his office. See here.
Ortiz just conceded:
Congratulations to Marcela Mitaynes.
Marcela Mitaynes is a socialist. She’s also a woman who sees that Sunset Park needs her help. Marcela has lived in Sunset Park and was evicted from a rent controlled apartment. Even if you don’t agree with her political position, she cares about her community!

July 16, 2020The Staten Island Advance is Moving to NJ
The Staten Island Advance Newspaper is moving their office to New Jersey. All of their employees were offered a job at the new location.
While right now that won’t change much in their news reporting, eventually it will.
As reporters leave the company, new reporters in NJ will fill their spots and NJ people will be reporting on what’s happening in Staten Island.
We have a reporter like that for our area and he doesn’t see what’s wrong with providing one-sided news or printing the press releases of politicians.
Maybe they don’t care, but I do. We’ve seen how harmful this can be to communities.

July 16, 2020The Art Room Closed on 3rd Avenue – Open Online
The Art Room closed for the pandemic and recently announced that they won’t be re-opening their brick and mortar location at 8710 – 3rd Avenue. They are still in business online as families are purchasing art kits to to continue learning. Covid-19 and social distancing will cause many businesses in this area to close. Art Fun Studio recently closed as well.
The Third Avenue Merchants mentioned that The Art Room was on 3rd Avenue for ten years.
The Art Room intends to open another place with an outdoor space in the future. Source That will be good news to many children and parents who love the owner and being able to create with her. The power is with the art teacher and this type of business could be set up anywhere – even temporarily, if needed.
The storefront is on Craigslist for $3500 a month. See here

Strangely, The Brooklyn Paper failed to mention that the owner, Leigh Holliday, is the wife of Councilman Justin Brannan. It’s strange that the paper’s editor, Meaghan McGoldrick left that out of the article, as she knows Brannan and is from Bay Ridge.
Good luck to Leigh – we hope to see you somewhere on the avenue soon!

Did you know the Salvation Army in Bay Ridge sells used Louis Vuitton bags? They sell a lot of used bag and wallets too. I have no idea if this one is an authentic LV, but that is a vintage pattern.
The Salvation Army Store is at 6822 Third Avenue.

July 14, 2020BLM Protest on 13th Avenue on July 18th
![]()
There is a BLM Protest on July 18th on 13th Avenue.
WARNING: This appeared on their instagram page calling for people to volunteer as marshals and medics! We have never seen a call for this before. Be cautious!!!!
![]()
Is it peaceful? There is no name/group on the flyer. I reached out to the organizer and I was told that this is a peaceful protest. I was also told the group ran a peaceful protest in our area before last weekend’s fiasco.
Last weekend, there was a protest in Bay Ridge labeled with BLM, but some of the organizers were political and it became more about the two political groups in the area, rather than about BLM.
Prior to last weekend, all protests were peaceful and informative. Each group that came prior to last weekend had strong chants and good energy because they were here for the right reason – because Black Lives Matter.

July 13, 2020The Owl’s Head is Closing
![]()
Sadly, The Owl’s Head at 479 – 74th Street is closing.
The Owl’s Head shared this message: “It is with great sadness that we are announcing that we will be closing The Owl’s Head by the end of this month. The effects of COVID-19 made it impossible for us to continue as a wine bar and, after further review, a wine shop would just not be feasible as it would require a much greater investment and risk to obtain the tools that we would need to survive. We still have wine, beer and snacks so you can stock up before we close!
We greatly appreciate all the support that you have provided The Owl’s Head family for the past 8+ years. It was great to share not only a glass of wine but celebrate art, poetry, literature, cinema and music together. Cheers!”
The Owls Head is where the Black Lives Matter mural was painted. See here
So many people loved this place.
Good luck to the owner.
