Paint Was Thrown at the Black Lives Matter Mural

A few weeks ago, the community was invited to participate in a mural outside of  The Owl’s Head.   See here

Someone with didn’t like the message of the mural, threw white paint on the mural. While we understand that racist didn’t like the message that Black Lives Matter, that person also showed they have no decency. Defacing property and destroying art that a community worked on is low.

But the message of  Black Lives Matter will just become stronger because of this racist act.

Bay Ridge parents did what they always do – offered their help!  They cheerfully offered to help fix the mural, buy supplies and offer continuous support to keep the art looking good. Why? Because they are community builders – their children live here and this matters.  And Black Lives Matter!

Update:  They are meeting at the Owl’s Head today, Saturday, June 20th between 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM to fix the mural.

Campania – Seating Outdoors

Campania is one of my favorite places. I haven’t been there in months, but we’ve ordered from there.

Their outside seating area looks great.

Tropical Storm Faye in Bay Ridge

Tropical Storm Faye wasn’t as bad as they predicted.

Restaurants on 3rd Avenue didn’t have a great day as it’s outside eating only still.

18 Avenue Feast Cancelled for 2020

Mayor de Blasio cancelled all street fairs and large gatherings until at least September 30th.  See here

There will be no Summer Strolls or 18th Avenue Festival in Brooklyn this Summer.

The Great Irish Fair was scheduled for September 19th.  Hopefully, they can get a date in October (if it is allowed by then).

Can You Be For Black Lives Matter and The Police?

Yes, of course you can!

Most people in this community support both.

Different political groups are trying to tell us we can’t support both, even though many people who went to the Black Lives Matter protests are also going to the NYPD walk.

They have organized counter protests for this weekend during the two NYPD support walks.  Yet their sign is incorrect – Blue Lives Matter did not organize either walk – residents did. Blue Lives Matter is not advertising it.

To have a protest and stand up for something you believe in is important.

Yelling at another group, who wants to boost morale for the officers in our area is counterproductive. It won’t change anything for black children or families. It’s time to do the work!

If you are involved in the Black Lives Matter Movement in our area, Teach People! Explain what systemic racism is – most people don’t know. Explaining implicit biases will help too.

Have Zoom chats at night when people are free.  Let’s do the 21 Day Racial Equity Challenge as a community. Tell people what they can do to help because they aren’t sure, but they want to help!

It’s easy to make signs and protest. The real work is challenging – it’s time to change minds, but more importantly systems which aren’t fair to black children.

Third Avenue and 97th Street – Formerly Pippins

This is the development that’s being built where Pippins used to be. (Pippins is on 90th Street and 3rd Avenue)

It’s almost done.  Of course it is super noisy for the people who live nearby.   See here

Neighbors must be glad that the building is almost done.

Masked Verrazzano Bridge

While it looks like the bridge is masked along with the rest of the neighborhood, it’s just a covering they put up when they are doing repairs or painting.

The covering is to keep cars below safe from debris.  We’ve seen some angry drivers post that their cars had debris fall on them the week before this went up.

Three Buildings Knocked Down – 3rd Avenue

Three buildings were knocked down on Third Avenue and 99th Street.   All that remains are stairs.

The one-family homes were 9952, 9956 and 9960 – 3rd Avenue.

An eight-story building is being put up here.

The permits were posted on the fence.

There was also a Stop Work Order.

The Department of Building’s site shows it was for not safeguarding a pile of dirt!  Someone reported that there were off-hour deliveries – when the inspector came he didn’t see that, but he did see another problem.

People pay a lot to live there – it’s right off Shore Road. (See here)

Supposedly, this developer is a local guy – what’s with the off hour deliveries and these problems? If he is local, why would he bother all the people that live nearby?

The last building at 9964 – 3rd Avenue (it’s the white one without the windows above) will also be replaced with an eight story building – see here

Why Didn’t RCSProgram Receive More Money?

</p

>

Reaching Out Community Services (RCS) is the pantry at 7708 New Utrecht Avenue.

We are in a pandemic and many people aren’t collecting a salary, so they need this food pantry.

We aren’t sure why this pantry didn’t receive more funding. In the new budget, they received the same funding for 2021 as they did in 2020.
