106 Million Slashed from Sanitation – Less Pickups

The good news is there will be no changes to curbside trash or recycling pickups outside people’s homes.

During the pandemic, NYC Dept of Sanitation stopped collecting compostable materials (the brown garbage cans). But 2. 9 Million was set aside for the NYC Compost Project to continue (but all of those sites are closed because of the pandemic)

Due to 106 Million being cut from DSNY’s budge, the DSNY Commissioner, Kathryn Garcia said there will be less pickups on street corners: (which is not good because bins are often full)

– No  pickups on Sundays

– Fewer trucks will make trips on weekdays and holidays

There will also be reduced street cleaning because they saw during the pandemic is wasn’t needed.

Rally for the NYPD on 13th Avenue on July 11th

On Saturday, July 11th at 11:00 am, there will be a rally for the NYPD.

Everyone will meet at Bay Ridge Parkway (75th Street) and 13th Avenue at 11:00 AM.   The March will go along 13th Avenue to 86th Street.

On Sunday, July 12th, there is a march in Bay Ridge to show support for the NYPD.

The support march will start at Bay Ridge Parkway and 4th Avenue at 6:00 pm on 7/12.

People want to show their support towards police officers in our area because they are working in a very difficult time right now.  Some people are showing animosity towards the police and this has to be affecting the officer’s morale.

During the Black Lives Matter protests in Bay Ridge, we saw officers in our area were very respectful to protesters.

The language of “defunding the police” should not have been used….words matter.   We need the police and the people to move forward and help get NYC through this difficult time.

There is a rise in shootings (48 people were shot at this weekend) and homicides (8 died from shootings this weekend in NYC) so something needs to change.

Liberty Travel on 86th Street Closed

When I saw the empty storefront on the 86th Street corner, I was so surprised.  Liberty Travel has been there forever.  (I’m not sure how long they have been closed.)

Covid-19 has stopped many people from traveling.

But if any business could be done from home, a travel agents certainly can. While the office is gone, their phone number is still active:  718-921-1889

Did the 4th of July Change Due to BLM?

COVID-19 is keeping NYC’s 4th of July activities small this year (but loud from the fireworks).  But there was another change this year.

Many people were asking, “Can we still celebrate the 4th of July?”   Yes we can, but we have to do better!

People questioning….even the way things have always been or holidays we celebrate is a start!  Checking that things are fair and inclusive is also a good thing.

I still see people calling other people out for not understanding BLM fully. CALL THOSE PEOPLE IN and help them understand.  If they don’t understand that racism is systemic, they aren’t going to understand “white privilege” or what’s wrong with “All Lives Matter.”  Calling them out isn’t helping anyone.

The BLM Marches made people realize that a lot of things need to be changed in society and everyone needs to be antiracist.  Saying “Black Lives Matters” is the least everyone can do. Parents of black children shouldn’t need to worry like Cheryl Wills, NY 1 News Reporter:

On Youtube, there are  a lot of videos that people explain first hand how they have been marginalized. Their stories will make you cry. Yes, some people are angry, look past their anger and hear their message.

On Netflix is When They See Us describing what happened to lead to the wrongful convictions of the Central Park 5  teens years ago.  The acting is great, but it’s heartbreaking to watch because I remember how it was played out in the media.
