February 27, 2021The 500K Butterfly Habitat in Bay Ridge Native Plant Garden – CB 10 Meeting

In 2019, newspapers reported that Councilman Justin Brannan had participatory budgeting and gave $500,000 for a butterfly garden/habitat. (See here)
Then we never heard anyone speak about the butterfly habitat again.
The above photo is the only one that mentions the butterfly .
The only other place it is mentioned is on the Councilman’s site. (See here)

For 500K, you would think there would be a lot of happy butterflies….right?
There are more butterflies in my backyard than there are at Shore Road Park.
I looked at the weedy areas near the highway, but there were no butterflies there this Summer either.
At the Community Board 10 Meeting this week, The Narrows Botanical Garden spoke about a native plant garden (wasn’t that supposed to be what the butterfly garden was?)

What happened to the butterfly habitat and where did the half million dollars go?

February 27, 2021Small Garbage Cans Don’t Work for Bay Ridge Streets

These photos of Bay Ridge Avenue and 4th Avenue were shared tonight.
People have been complaining about dirty streets to Justin Brannan for awhile, but he doesn’t seem to be doing anything to correct the problem.

Small garbage cans on busy streets no longer work.
This isn’t the beginning of the pandemic – this is almost a year into the pandemic!

When pickups aren’t happening as frequently, it’s obvious that larger cans are needed in the area.
Why hasn’t Brannan purchased larger cans?

Where is the money from this district going when most not-for-profits are operating less frequently – if at all?

February 27, 2021Gambling Den Robbery on 57th and 7th Avenue Brooklyn – A Good Samaritan Was Killed As He Tried to help

Around 9:30 pm last night, there was a robbery on 57th and 7th Avenue in Brooklyn. (See here)

This is my old neighborhood in Sunset Park – that area has always been a little seedy.
This happened in the basement of Lang Qi Chinese Restaurant at 5701 – 7th Avenue.

The News described it as a gambling den in the basement of the restaurant. (See here)
The Post reported that the robbers tried to break in, but an employee knifed one of them. (See here) No one else reported this detail.
Four or five men with knives entered the basement and stole cash and cell phones. Those in the illegal gambling den fought back and chased after the assailants.

Update: A group of eight Asian men and women were returning home from a Lunar New Year dinner. They saw the robbery and some of the men tried to help. Some of them were stabbed as the robbers got away.
The police found four men lying on a sidewalk around 9:30 p.m., according to police. (Source)
Three men were brought to the hospital with stab wounds. One 49-year old man was treated on the scene for a stab wound.
One man, who was brought to the hospital was stabbed in the back. He was not part of the gambling den. He was a Good Samaritan who was passing by and tried to help out.
At the hospital, the Good Samaritan was put into a medically induced coma. Around 12:30 am, the Citizen apps showed that the 46-year-old Good Samaritan died at the hospital. (RIP). This man leaves behind a wife and a 5 year old son.
The suspects drove off in a 2018 white Mercedes SUV with the NYS License plate of JLH9539 was seen by people and reported on the Citizen App.
The Post reported that two dozen police were on the scene investigating. (See here)
Is this an ordinary robbery or an attack on Asians?
On social media, I am seeing several people labeling this a hate crime as the men were Asian. This was a known gambling den….so I don’t think it is a hate crime issue this time.

The police have not determined that this a hate crime, yet Senator Andrew Gounardes said it is.
Politicians have to make sure that what they are sharing is accurate because there has been a rise in crimes against Asians in NYC. (See here)
When the Coronavirus came to the United States last year, people stopped eating in restaurants on 8th Avenue, Gounardes labeled that as hate as well (even when Asian people stopped eating at these restaurants because they were afraid of getting the virus).
Submit tips to police by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477)
