Teen Torched Flags on 74th Street in Bay Ridge

Around 12:00 pm today, the news announced that two flags were burned outside a home on 74th Street and Fourth Avenue in Bay Ridge on Thursday around 6:30 pm. (Source and more info)
One flag was a Ukrainian Flag and one was a Pride flag. This is the second time a Pride flag was put on fire in Bay Ridge. (Info)
This happened four days ago! Not one politician told the community last week or over the weekend. No local papers carried the story – not even today when it was shared on social media.
The NYPD is investing this as a hate crime.
If you know the teen in the photo call: NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS or tell me and I will share the info.
UPDATE: Councilman Brannan repeated the news late this afternoon. I’m surprised he didn’t let the LGBT Community know – this is very alarming to them and the hate makes many people fearful.

September 17, 2023The Smell of Gas in Bay Ridge

I smelled gas yesterday. Then the wind blow and the smell went away and it didn’t return.
Today the smell is stronger. It is not the smell of rotten eggs for natural gas, it’s like the smell of a gas station – but stronger4.
Someone wrote about it on the Citizen App in the 80’s.
Then someone wrote to me about it.

I shared it was Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny and the 68th Precinct. But it’s Sunday, so they aren’t looking at their apps. I called 311, who quickly transferred me to 911. I didn’t want to disturb 911….but what if this is someone’s house or a bigger problem?
The quickly connected me to the FDNY. I told them it wasn’t an emergency, but that we are smelling gas in the 80’s – 90’s. The fire truck came within minutes (seriously the FDNY in Bay Ridge is amazing). They checked the area and left.

Online we saw some people complained about the smell from the Owls Head Wastewater Treatment Plant on 67th Street and the Belt Parkway, but that smells like sewage – not gas. And we don’t usually smell that near us.

September 17, 2023Johnny’s Pizzeria in Sunset Park Is Closing!
UPDATE: On January 18, 2024, John announced that Johnny’s Pizzria’s last day will be Wendesday, January 24, 2024. (See info here)

People shared on social media that Johnny’s Pizzeria on 5th Avenue and 58th Street in Sunset Park was closing. I didn’t believe it, so I asked Johnny.

He said in the future he will be retiring – he’s not making a announcement yet. Johnny’s Pizzeria has been open 55 years! So that means there is plenty of time to enjoy his pizza!

And yes, he delivers to Bay Ridge.
