When Community Board 10’s Police and Public Safety Wants to Talk About Liquor Licenses Instead of Public Safety!

Since the home invasion in Dyker Heights this week and the Squatters on 73rd Street, I have been thinking about why people in our community aren’t getting the help they need.

The Community Board is supposed to serve as an arm to assist residents and to receive communication. It’s failing on both points. Communication from the office isn’t about important issues like information about a homeless shelter being built on 4th Avenue, squatters in the area or a Brownfield Cleanup property being purchased for a school location.

Tonight is the Police and Public Safety Meeting. Yet, they are talking about liquor licenses for businesses.

In other Community Boards, liquor license are done by the Licensing and Permits Committee. Who can change this in our community?

73rd Street Residents Warn Bay Ridge About Squatters in the Area

The residents on 73rd Street dealt with squatters at 95 – 73rd Street for over two years!

Here’s what the home looked like before the fire:

We drove over to this block between Colonial and Narrows Avenue to see what type of block it is. It’s a pretty block – it’s not just a nice block in Bay Ridge, it’s a very nice block.

The owner of the home died. A private investigator was hired to locate the next of kin. The next of kin was not found (he may be deceased as well). Then squatters appeared at the home. One man claimed he was the new home owner.

The quiet block saw a big change and a lot of activity during the early morning hours and also late at night.

A new problem emerged when the squatters started selling drugs. If you have someone on your block selling drugs, you know it.

The residents on the block saw people doing drugs during the day outside the home. The squatters had verbal altercations and threatened elderly residents, who asked them not to block driveways.

At one point, there was a child living in one of the partitioned apartments. Residents tried to get help for the child as they knew what was going on, but help never came.

Finally, there were three large pit bulls, which were being walked off-leash regularly.

The residents felt unsafe and contacted 311, 911, Justin Brannan, Community Board 10 and other offices to help them with all the problems named above (and some I have not named). No one was able to help them get the squatters out. Our neighbors on 73rd Street deserved better!

Councilman Justin Brannan barely helped these Bay Ridge residents by having a few of the squatter’s cars removed from the block. Brannan did not address the squatting or other illegal activity. Brannan told the residents of 73rd Street that the property was privately owned.

I don’t know why Councilman Brannan didn’t get the residents on 73rd Street help from the police.

On March 21st, there was a fire in the basement of 95 – 73rd Street that helped end the squatters reign on the block.

The fire caused enough damage that the fire department issue an evacuation order.

Even after the evacuation order, the squatters still remained at the property. Eventually, the 68th Precinct police arrested them for criminal trespassing when they refused to vacate the burned house.

After the fire, a Kings County Public Administrator confirmed that 95 – 73rd Street was CITY-OWNED. Why didn’t Councilman Brannan look into this?

While the squatters are now gone from this block, the residents still see their cars on the block, so they believe the squatters are still in the area.

Our Bay Ridge neighbors are shared this because they don’t want anyone else in Bay Ridge to have this group living on their block. Keep an eye on the vacant homes on your block, Bay Ridge! The squatters may have researched the deceased owners property – he owned two other resident’s in the area.

Bay Ridge Neighbors – something has to change in our community. The people who have been elected and hired to help us are failing us.

Brownfield Cleanup Proposed for 21 Million Dollar Property at 88th Street and 5th Avenue

I never thought we would hear that there was a need for a Brownfield Cleanup in Bay Ridge. These cleanups are usually for very toxic sites.

Years ago, some people in our community chose 88th Street and 5th Avenue as a location for another school.

This is the Santander Bank location – across the street from the Post Office.

In April 2021, Community Board 10 accepted this location for a school site in a 28 minute online meeting. (Info and video: https://shorturl.at/LU36A)

No one on Community Board 10 mentioned this property in Bay Ridge was going to need a:

This site was tested before the property was purchased, so the politician, Justin Brannan knew this property had a problem. Community Board 10 also knew (Info: https://is.gd/qXF6wG)

Why did NYC purchase the property for 21 Million if it had these problems?

The owner of this property also owned the Nathan’s property. No one from Community Board 10 mentioned that at the meeting- even though that information was available publicly. He made $21 Million here.

Tonight, members of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation were at Community Board 10 Meeting because the property marked Lot 39 in the photo above was a former Giuffre auto site and now there are chemicals underground.

They delivered a speech that talked about chemicals that will be removed from the property, but didn’t discuss what harm these chemicals do. A savvy Community Board 10 Member interjected some information about the chemicals causing autism and ADHD.I have no idea if they do, but this Mom has only made beneficial comments at CB 10 Meetings.

Here’s what the NYS DEC found in the soil:

Here’s what they found in the groundwater:

They want Lot 39 to be the playground or the school. Here’s what they are going to do on Lot 39:

While they remove these toxins from the ground, they will have meters to test the air. If you live around 88th Street and 5th Avenue have you been contacted that this will be happening?

(Side note: No one is going to tell us if the meters registered high numbers of anything. We have lived in Bay Ridge for 15 years – they don’t tell people what is coming out of the Owl’s Head Plant. )

Here’s their proposed work:

Community Board 10 didn’t share this information with the community: The DEC is taking comments from the public from March 27th to April 25th (so you have 16 days to make a comment still).

This was the only contact information offered for the comments:

We sent some questions in. If we get a response, we will share it here.

Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting for the Family on 84th Street & Dyker Heights

The stabbing on Sunday shook Dyker Heights and some people are gathering to pray on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm.

The Metropolitan Baptist Church at 1624 84th Street invites the community to join them for prayer this family and for Dyker Heights (the home invasion has left people on edge).

Brooklyn, please pray for the 16-year-old daughter – the man who stabbed the children was the father of this young woman and she must be devastated.

We will not be joining you for prayer as we are celebrating someone special in our family.
