September 11, 2020September 11th – Not Forgotten
A lot has changed in nineteen years.
I’m glad there are people who know it’s important to remember this day.
NYC was so patriotic after 9/11. Even with loss all around us, there was such patriotism. And we were all together.
While there have always a few people who didn’t like the flag, this Summer, Bay Ridge saw a small group of people chant, “Death to America,” as if the words didn’t mean anything. Did we forget that terrorism didn’t just materialize on September 11th?
While the pandemic keeps people socially apart, the country is more divided than ever. How did we get so far apart? More importantly….what will it take to bring us back together?
The United States lost almost 3,000 people on 9/11/01. Back then we were stunned by that number and the people taken suddenly from our lives – it was the worst that we had seen.
This year, the pandemic has claimed the lives of 32,618 New Yorkers, 191,574 people in the United States and 905,181 worldwide. (Statistics here)
Both tragedies had numerous heroes, who put their lives on the line for strangers. Many essential workers lost their lives this year helping to keep this city running.
Today, we remember those who we lost on 9/11, as well as the heroes – 341 firefighters who died in 9/11.
We are so far apart now – not just because of social distance, but the divide in our country is painful. Hopefully by next 9/11, things will change for NYC and America.

September 10, 2020Did New Corners Restaurant Close For Good?
New Corners has been closed temporarily for awhile.
Today I saw this news:

It’s sad to see places closing – especially ones which have been part of this community for decades.
They were open for 84 years.

September 10, 2020Car Jacking at Gunpoint in Bay Ridge
![]()
Update: No information came out after this. A comment left below states that this wasn’t a carjacking – it was a dispute over drugs.
This afternoon, the Citizen App reported that there was a carjacking by gunpoint around 3:00 pm on 67th Street and Colonial Roa. No one has been caught yet.
It must have been terribly scary for the person who lost their car. : (

September 10, 2020Bay Ridge is Losing Century 21 on 86th Street
![]()
One of the main attractions on 86th Street’s shopping strip in Bay Ridge was Century’s.
I heard the chatter about it closing in July, but when I called the store, I was told it was just a rumor.
Today, we found out that Century’s filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is closing all of it’s stores. Not only is this a loss in a nice store for the area, but also many people will be losing their jobs. Century’s announced that they would be having “Going Out of Business Sales Soon.”
We have to get another business in that spot ASAP. The bigger store brings the traffic AND people like to stop and get a slice at Pizza Wagon while they are shopping (RIGHT?)
I received messages from people telling me that this would be the perfect place for a Trader Joe’s. I agree it is the perfect spot, so I contacted TJ’s and told them to consider 472 86th Street in Brooklyn as a location for their store because they have several floors, plus parking.
Can you do the same and let them know you are interested? Go here and send a message to TJ’s

September 9, 2020New Business Owner was Shot at in Bay Ridge
![]()
Sammy Hamden is opening a new restaurant on 86th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue in Bay Ridge. It’s near the Spectrum store.
![]()
On Monday night around 10:30 pm, a thief robbed his chain and shot at him while he was working on. Thankfully, Sammy was not in the line of this bullet that went through the entire freezer.
The thief’s gun jammed. Then the thief made a getaway. Watch the video and hear the great story of how the robber was captured and arrested by the 68th Precinct. See here
We’re glad Sammy is okay.
Another win for the 68th Precinct NYPD. Oh yeah….who’s defunding them??
Why are we hearing about armed robbery from the the news, instead of local officials like Senator Gounardes and Councilman Brannan? This happened five blocks away from Andrew Gounardes office. Does he know? Does he care? There was no mention of this incident on either politician’s social media or sites!

September 9, 2020Restaurant Owners Win with Nicole Malliotakis
![]()
Nicole Malliotakis stood with the restaurant owners in August and called for restaurants to have indoor dining. Malliotakis sent a letter to the city requesting guidelines for indoor dining. (See here) They spoke about a class action lawsuit on behalf of the Staten Island and South Brooklyn restaurants. (See here)
Yesterday they filed the lawsuit.
Today, Governor Cuomo said restaurants in NYC can open at 25%/. See story
And that’s winning!
![]()
This will keep some places in business. The Fall comes quickly in Bay Ridge and the owners will need to have indoor seating.
Good work Nicole Malliotakis and other politicians who stood up for Bay Ridge restaurant owners including: Vito Bruno of Bay Ridge (2nd from the left) and Mike Tannousis (far left), Councilman Steve Matteo from Staten Island (white shirt and stripe tie) and Senator Andrew Lanza (blue suit with striped tie) fro Staten Island.
Business owners in Bay Ridge have received very little support. How do I know? I asked them.
Where were the other Bay Ridge representatives? Senator Gounardes is an attorney and could have filed a suit on behalf of the restaurant owners. But all we saw Andrew do was take pictures of himself on the corner and put them on his website and in the local paper. Gounardes did not appeal to his friend Governor Cuomo for the business owners in Bay Ridge. We find this is a regular problem for him to speak out effectively for our community.
While this was a HUGE win for the business owners in our neighborhood, Councilman Brannan didn’t congratulate Malliotakis.
Brannan posted this on social media:

I am not a fan of Nicole Malliotakis’, but the truth is she was fantastic at listening to the business owners, standing up for them and being persistent about it. In fact, today she wrote:
