October 9, 2020Mara Wiley….No! And Why Fearful People Don’t Get Things Done
![]()
Mara Wiley announced that she is running for mayor. Mara worked for Bill de Blasio. In Ariama Long’s article, Wiley says all you need to know about why she should not be mayor: “In her speech, Wiley took a few softball shots at De Blasio, saying that she didn’t have experience “being so afraid to make a wrong decision that [she] made no decision at all.”
People who live in fear – always live in fear. Andrew Gounardes and Justin Brannan didn’t take steps to help Bay Ridge home owners because they are afraid of their party leaders. Both used press releases to fool us.
![]()
Mara Wiley was the head of NYC’s police oversight board. So that’s not good because we can see where we are now! (See here)
Reporter, Jeff Coltin shared that Wiley was seen with Justin Brannan in Bay Ridge. Click here to see the picture larger.
When you are wondering why things aren’t getting done, it’s because politicians are making plans with Democrats instead of in the neighborhood. Other neighborhoods had their streets closed and events for the businesses – not Bay Ridge!

October 8, 2020Owl’s Head Park Playground Is Accepting Ideas
![]()
Davey Ives, Christopher Syrett, Lauren Sylvester and Rachel Kramer from NYC Parks ran a virtual meeting about Owl’s Head Park.
![]()
Four million dollars is going to be spent on parks – it’s not going to start for a long time – it’s a three year process.
FOUR MILLION DOLLARS
FOUR MILLION DOLLARS
FOUR MILLION DOLLARS – even when NYC has a 9 billion dollar budget hole and has cut sanitation services. Does that make sense?
![]()
Tonight and for the next two weeks, they are taking input from the community about what they want in the park.
![]()
The skate park is not part of this project. The basketball court is part of this design, but they were not part of tonight’s conversation. This meeting was about the Owl’s Head playground area.
About 20 Bay Ridge residents were at this meeting. Several teams of concerned parents and children brought great ideas for the park.
Bad news: For one year, the playground will be off limits. Davey Ives said the park was bland. They are going to add new colors to the playground.
![]()
Children asked for:
1) Monkey bars
2) A bridge attached to a boat (like a pirate ship) and a water area with sand
3)Big kids swings (Response: You need 30 feet high to install this so it may not be part of the design. Even thought there is FOUR MILLION DOLLARS…..Get the kids some swings!
4) A strawberry to climb in
5) Longer slides
6) One girl asked for the playground to be made larger because there are so many children there. Parents agreed that this needs to be larger!
7) 65th Street Park has some great climbing equipment (John Alateen Park)
8) The design needs to to include children with disabilities. Children on the spectrum get left out of the design for parks. How about a wheelchair accessible swing? There is not one in the area.
I’m actually putting this here to see if the NYC Parks Department is going to listen to the residents designs and concerns OR if they are just going to roll out a generic park with FOUR MILLION DOLLARS.
Children can still send drawings of what they want in the park to the NY Parks Designer, Aurora. Her e-mail address is: [email protected]

Will the drainage system be updated in Owl’s Head Park? Yes! There is an area on the walkway that floods from the hill. The water gathers and becomes stagnant after a rainstorm. They plan to address this in the design.
A lovely Bay Ridge resident spoke to a staff member who worked at the park. The NYC Parks worker said her claw for cleaning up was stolen and she had to buy a new one herself from Amazon. He asked: Why can’t the NYC Parks Department replace the claw for her?
![]()
They will be looking into new lighting also.
The homeless people sleeping in the park came up. They don’t just throw the homeless people out of the park anymore. A resident said that the problem is that the homeless are defecating in the park and there is a biohazard area in the park. Children and dogs can’t be around this. Can a porta-potty be added? (Send e-mail if to the address below if you think this is important)
![]()
People love to play volleyball at Owl’s Head Park. Is there a way to include this into the design so that the grass doesn’t get ruined in the park?
New, larger garbage cans will be added. Since COVID-19 started, there are a lot of people, but there isn’t enough storage for garbage. An organized effort to collect garbage. (The NYC Parks Department spoke about zone management, but they didn’t seem to get the jist that garbage is problem)
Someone asked: “Are the brick walls staying?” Yes, they are staying.
New seating in the shade can be added – like this:

October 8, 2020Bishop Diocese Sued NY State for School Closings
UPDATE: The court ruled that the state can take action to for public safety. Bishop DiMarzo said they will comply but this is not over.

Three days after schools were closed in Governor Cuomo’s Covid-19 Hotspots, the Catholic Church and Orthodox Jews have filed lawsuits! (See story)
![]()
Bishop DiMarzio said this is the first time the Catholic Church had to file an injunction. DiMarzio said the Catholic Church has taken every precaution necessary in Catholic schools and at Church. DiMarzio is fighting against the Covid limitations on church. (See here)
A group of Orthodox Jews have also filed a federal lawsuit against the governor. They are accusing Governor Cuomo of infringing on their First Amendment Rights…..freedom of religion. See here
Three days later, politicians do nothing except play politics as usual.
Andrew Gounardes had a Twitter rant with himself yesterday. That accomplished NOTHING. (See here)
![]()
Today, Senator Gounardes took out his podium to pretend he has done something.
Gounardes is an attorney and could have filed suit on behalf of the parents by now, but instead opted for a picture-taking moment.
Andrew Gounardes didn’t accomplish anything here, except to get free press.
Has Gounardes fooled you enough times yet, Bay Ridge? Tonight Gounardes walked on television – See video

October 8, 2020Some Children’s Team Sports Cancelled Due to Zones
Update: Councilman Brannan came out and said that 25 children can play, but if it went up to 27, they wouldn’t get ticketed. He didn’t do anything. He just told them the requirements are no more than 25 children.
Some children’s teams that play at Shore Road Park have been told that they can’t have games there for two weeks.
If they play in the park, they will face a fine!
Bay Ridge is not in a Covid Hotspot. We are in the yellow on the map.
Many parents feel that children shouldn’t lose their opportunity to play in October.
Children are counting on having some fun on these teams (and normalcy in their lives)

October 8, 2020Brooklyn Vicar Speaks Out for Catholic Schools
Monsignor David Cassato is the Vicar for Brooklyn Catholic Schools. He spoke out against the closing of schools in Brooklyn because the Catholic Schools have taken the necessary precautions and haven’t had ANY Covid breakouts.
During the Pandemic, Msgr. Cassato produced a video for social media several times a week. He encouraged community and faith. I found him to be very upbeat. He was a great choice as the vicar because he’s modern and seems to genuinely care about the community!
