October 7, 2020Palestinian Street Food Comes to Bay Ridge
![]()
In August, we went to Leo’s to pick up food. Next door to Leo’s this mural was being painted on the wall. When I saw it, I thought, “Okay this restaurant owner is serious about being here.” Sometimes a restaurant will have good food, but they don’t plan out their space well and give the restaurant a personality.
This mural is beautiful!
It belongs to Ayat NYC – Palestinian Street Food.
![]()
Ayat NYC opened where Alaskan Tan used to be 8504 3rd Avenue (before that, it was called Sundeck Tanning Sal0n). There are tables outside and inside. The front is wide open for good ventilation!
![]()
Ayat’s Appetizers: hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh salad (parley minched with bulgar, tomatoes, onions and olive oil), Zahir (fried cauliflower served on tahini), fried eggplant (next to last item on menu) and Tahini Salad (last item is chopped cucumbers, tomatoes and parsley with tahini)
![]()
On Ayat’s traditional menu, there is falafel, beef shawarma over rice, chicken shawarma sandwiches, fried kibbe balls, meat pies, spinach pies, cheese pies, chicken tawook sandwich, stuffed grape leaves and stuffed cabbage leaves.
![]()
On Ayat’s Mashawi menu: Juicy chicken kebabs with rice and salad (friends said this is very good), lamb kebabs, rib eye, t-bone steak and bbq chicken.
A friend recommended that I try their coffee because it was sooo good.
(Mashawi is an Arabic word meaning any meat or vegetable that can be roasted or barbecued on an open fire)
![]()
I have a friend who is named Ayat and she told me that her name means “Miracles.”
Ayat NYC is owned by Abdul Elani, owner of Fahadi Farm Grocery and Frite Bar, which are both across the street.

I have written about Abdul before because I think he is a great business owner. He brings Bay Ridge stores that we don’t have and isn’t afraid to try new things or change a business plan.
It isn’t easy to open a restaurant, especially during a pandemic!
Bay Ridge, head over to 85th Street and 3rd Avenue and try the new Palestinian Street Food restaurant, Ayat NYC!

October 6, 2020New Restaurant Coming to 3rd Avenue
Woohoooooooo!
A new restaurant is coming to the corner of 3rd Avenue and 94th Street.
This used to be the location of Glory Fruit & Vegetable store, but the storefront hasn’t been occupied in many years (it’s been closed for 8 or 10 years). It’s next door to The Common and Walgreens is next to that.
The owner was outside of the place. He looked happy and I could tell he could already see the finished place in his mind. The owner said that the restaurant is going to sell healthy food and fish. It is expected to open at the end of October!
Congratulations to the new owner, who knows this pandemic isn’t going to last forever. We are very excited to see a new business starting here!

October 6, 2020Borough Park Fights Back Against Cuomo’s Covid Zones
Citizen App is showing videos of people gathering. (See the videos) The good news is that more people have masks on in the video that we have previously seen.
About 80 Orthodox Jews gathered in Borough Park Brooklyn tonight for a Civil Disobedience protest against Mayor and Governor of New York. Speaker Heshy Tischler and the group were protesting closing of businesses.

Many in Borough Park feel targeted by NYC government and Governor Cuomo’s Covid Zones. They aren’t willing to shutdown and are fighting back by taking to the streets!
#BREAKING: Cuomo threatens to close religious institutions that do not follow guidelines: “If you do not agree to enforce the rules, then we’ll close the institutions down. I am prepared to do that.” pic.twitter.com/nEb2kxRl96
— The Hill (@thehill) October 5, 2020
I think the government needs to do a better job of working with religious leaders. One of the breakdowns is that political leaders want to sit on social media, instead of meeting with people and handling issues. Plenty of people aren’t wearing masks in many neighborhoods.
Some reporter got swarmed and chased out by Jews in Borough Park tonight. What a scene. Wow. pic.twitter.com/m0WVTsOniT

One neighborhood where you will see 95% of people in masks is Sunset Park, especially 8th Avenue. Many people know someone who died from Covid-19, so they have been wearing masks since last Fall.

October 6, 2020Red and Orange Zones in Brooklyn – Be Aware
Yesterday, the red and orange zones in Brooklyn were released. 11219, the closest to us is a red zone and schools are closed.
![]()
Today Cuomo had this graphic up in his Press Conference:
![]()
Bay Ridge is not in the red or orange zone. In the new maps, it is in the yellow zone. Yellow means nothing has changed from last week.
![]()
This week, Bay Ridge held the last spot (20th) in Cuomo’s list of zip codes where Covid-19 was rising. Bay Ridge’s rates were still very low.

It’s almost Halloween and pets love dressing up! (You can’t start when they are five years old, you have to start when they are a kitten or puppy if you want them to like it).
A local Brooklyn artist made these hats and a portion of the proceeds is going to an animal charity.
They are available at My Natural Pet Store at 8318 5th Avenue.
You can call to 718-333-5678 to make sure hats are still available.

October 4, 2020Are 11219 Schools and Businesses Closing on 10/7?
![]()
Public and non-public schools in 11219 will be closed starting on Wednesday, pending approval from the state. Mayor de Blasio said that he has seen very little coronavirus in the schools and this is being done out of caution.
Eeekk! 11219 is the highest area with 8.31% of people having COVID-19. *Prayers* that these people get light cases of coronavirus.
Here’s the weird thing, 11219 has been over 3% for 14+ day. Not one elected representatives said a word. Carlos Menchaca is the Councilman, Andrew Gounardes is the Senator and Peter Abbate is the Assemblyman in the area.
