People Marching for Parole Justice in Bay Ridge

You asked me if I knew why people were marching with a banner in Bay Ridge yesterday.
I saw that the People’s Campaign for Parole Justice planned a march on May 6th at 6:00 pm to Andrew Gounardes’ office at 8515 5th Avenue. This was their form. This is their instagram.
Gounardes voted in favor of bail reform, so I am not sure why they would need to march to his office, as he is likely for it.

May 7, 2021Tenants at the Dorset Not Having an Easy Time
The Dorset is in the news again. Last time, we saw them in the paper on Thanksgiving because the tenants didn’t have gas to cook. (See here)
The politicians haven’t been able to do anything to help them. Brannan’s staffer complained about the landlord, but didn’t offer a remedy for the tenants. (See here)
Assemblywoman Frontus was very vocal about this issue in the Fall. The article doesn’t say if they contacted her for an update.

May 5, 2021Slow Response From Justin Brannan. He Used to Be The First Voice Heard….Now He’s One of the Last

Yesterday, people noticed that Columbus Day was nixed from the NYC school calendar. In it’s place was: Indigenous People’s Day (now Italian Heritage Indigenous People Day).
People spoke in favor or against the change on social media on Monday and newspaper early yesterday (See here). Justin Brannan didn’t say anything.
Late today, Brannan responded on Facebook. Brannan used to be one of the first voices people heard in our community. We’ve seen Brannan delayed in responding to situations.
This should have been an easy one for Brannan to write as he celebrates Columbus Day. (See photos here)
What was he doing yesterday? Writing another opt-ed for the paper of course. (See here) In the article, Brannan failed to mention all of the businesses which received no help. Brannan also left out all of the Bay Ridge businesses that that closed quietly this year.
NYC Council did not help businesses a lot after Covid. Why is Justin Brannan spending time writing to a newspaper about what other parts of government are doing for businesses? (See here)
How was Justin Brannan with businesses in Bay Ridge before Covid? Justin pushed a BID that the majority of the business owners didn’t want. For over a year they tried to get a BID to pass. The residents want the business owners to do well here. Brannan needed to listen better – not to a small group, but to the all business owners. Thousands of tax dollars were wasted on “exploring a BID.”

May 5, 2021How Many Times Will the NYC Board of Elections Dispute a Woman’s Name on a Ballot?

It isn’t easy for women to run for office in NYC.
The NYC Board of Elections gave Heidi Chan-Sarantopoulos a hard time over her name. Heidi is running for Republican District Leader of Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights with Bob Cassara.
In the April 20th meeting at 48:32, the Board of Elections had a long discussion about Heidi’s name and refused to change her name on the ballot. It was awful to watch the video!
Seven members of the Board of Elections voted against Heidi using the name Heidi.
The Board of Elections thought Hei Man (her legal name) was too far away from Heidi and it would confuse people. The video is online – it won’t allow me to direct link to it – you have to find the April 20th meeting. (Video at 48:32)
** The Board of Elections in NYC has ten Commissioners, two from each borough which were each recommended by the Democrats or Republicans and then appointed by the New York City Council for a term of four years. ** (Source)
I’m thankful there was one woman who voted in favor of the name change (she was in the top row). You could tell she thought the entire discussion was ridiculous as she voted YES.
If candidates can have their name translated into other languages on the ballot, why wouldn’t an Americanized version of a name be acceptable? A person should be able to use whatever name they use in their community! They could have easily put both names.
The Board of Elections also didn’t want to change Heidi’s last name to her married name. A hyphenated name is easy to understand.
Brooklyn Republicans, the name you will need to look for on the ballot right for this new district leader is: Hei Man “Heidi” Chan ??? and Bob Cassara.
Maybe this is just how they try to discourage people from running for the position?!
NYC we have been here before!! Last year, the Board of Elections had these two women removed from the ballot because of their names (See here and here) The women knew they were in the right and went to court in Queens to fight it. They won and were able to get back on the ballot. (See here)
Someone please change the rules so the Board of Elections can’t do this to women….women who are married, who want to use an Americanized version of their name or who just want to run on the name their community calls them.

May 4, 2021Andrew Gounardes is Unprofessional. He Needs to Use the F Word to Express His Thoughts in the News
When you hear people speaking with profanities, it means they don’t have a command of the English language. When we see an elected official speaking this way, it means that he doesn’t have any respect for the community he represents.

We don’t hear people speaking this way in business, courts, schools, etc. Why would it be acceptable for the senator to bring street language to government and the paper. If he can’t express his anger with some other words, he should get some help.
That type of language didn’t change one thing for our community – no one is driving any slower because of Gounardes.
