Kathy Hochul Came to Bay Ridge to Tell Us Andrew Gounardes Wrote the Sleep Bill Because He Has a 10 Month Old Baby Who Can’t Sleep
Even Kathy Hochul is laughing that Senator Andrew Gounardes wrote the Sleep Bill because he can’t sleep. It’s Fall and most people aren’t racing around.
I think Governor Hochul was laughing because the bill isn’t enforceable unless police are giving out tickets.

October 30, 2021Homeless Shelter Coming To 137 Kings Highway – West 13th Street – Bensonhurst, Brooklyn

A homeless shelter is being planned for 137 Kings Highway in Brooklyn – West `13th Street. They plan to open the shelter in 2024.

The neighborhood doesn’t want a shelter next to the elementary school.
Seth Low Park is down the block from this location.
People want affordable housing for families in their area. They don’t want a temporary shelter because that doesn’t solve the problem for families.
This shelter will be for 75 families with priority to people in the area.
Some people are saying that this is a shelter for men. Yes, men will be at the shelter if they are in a family, like if their is a grown son living with his mother. They aren’t going to separate the family because people don’t want men at the shelter.
Community Board 11 does not have homeless shelter to house children and families without a home.
People are afraid that drug addicts will be around the shelter. The shelter is going to provide people with the support to get help. So that’s a good thing!
There will be a Community Advisory Board (CAB) at the shelter and people in the community can volunteer for that. The CAB will hold regular meetings and address any issues that come up.
Update: Bill Colton has been fighting against this shelter – see here

October 30, 2021NYC Sanitation Driving Through in Bay Ridge – UPDATE: They Returned!

Just heard a sanitation truck’s running for 5 minutes on my block Bay Ridge. I went to the window to cheer for them and say Thank You.
The truck proceeded up the block at a crawling speed, but the sanitation workers didn’t get out of the truck to collect the garbage. I’ve never seen their truck move so slowly.
They say this is happening because of the vaccine mandates.
Our last pickup was last Friday, October 22nd. They skipped Monday 10/25 and yesterday’s pickup, 10/29.
UPDATE:

9:30 am update: The Sanitation Truck returned and picked up our block. A supervisor was also on the block.

This afternoon, we followed a sanitation truck for a few blocks and wondered if it was doing the same thing. The truck travelled slowly and made no stops – that’s why your garbage may not have been picked up.

October 29, 2021People Drowned in Their Homes Because NYC Council Failed to Act Senator Gounardes Hails the Council For Late Action

Does Senator Gounardes live in NYC? People drowned in their basements in Queens because NYC Council failed to act. Illegal basements are one thing, but the Council was also aware of how basements could have been made legal.
Now they have a resiliency plan after people died? NOOOOOOOOO don’t praise that because you want to play politics.

Brannan loves to Opt Ed us, but PEOPLE DROWNED IN THEIR HOMES. Don’t write an opt-ed after you failed to act!

October 29, 2021How Many People Have to Die In Bay Ridge For Dealerships to Stop Parking on Our Sidewalks?

In April 2021, a Bay Ridge resident was killed when she was hit by a car outside of a car dealership. (See here) Politicians spoke about safety, but it was just rhetoric for the newspaper to print.
Six months later, we see Signature Auto on 92nd Street and 4th Avenue doesn’t understand that the sidewalk is not their parking lot.

I don’t walk around here and never cared about who was parked on the sidewalk UNTIL there was a death last Spring. Pedestrians shouldn’t have to be cautious while on the sidewalk. The dealerships know better and this is not hard to enforce.
The Bay Ridge photographer who took the photos above, Tom Hilton told me: “The man with the hat in the car with the license plate, blew his horn at me while I was on the sidewalk.” (See photo)
Signature Auto shares photos of their cars on the sidewalk here, here, here and here because they know not one politician is managing this area.
When a Bay Ridge resident was killed in a tragedy outside a dealership in April, Councilman Brannan’s foul language was quoted in Gothamist (here)

Just three months before, (January 2021), residents called Brannan out on Twitter for accepting donations from a car dealership (not the same one where the accident happened, but one that people had complained to Brannan about). (See here)
People asked Brannan what happened to the 2018 bill he introduced to stop car dealerships from parking on the sidewalk. Of course the local paper made Brannan look like he stepped up, when he didn’t follow through with the bill. You can see it here.

And Brannan’s sign is above this dealership:

In July 2021, Senator Gounardes accepted money from Bay Ridge Automotive Management and the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association PAC.

Why did the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association PAC give Senator Gounardes a $1000 donation in July? – more info about this pac here

This Political Action Committee lists many dealerships, some which are in Bay Ridge (including Bay Ridge Volkswagon where our neighbor was killed).

Why would Gounardes think it was okay to accept money from this PAC?)
The following day, July 7, 2021, Senator Gounardes accepted a $4000.00 donation from Bay Ridge Automotive Management Corp.

Dealerships continue to park on the sidewalk because politicians look away.

October 29, 2021Why is a Bus Left on 86th Street Between 12th and 13th Avenue Not Ticketed Like Crazy?

A Brooklyn resident reported that this bus has been left in the same spot for three weeks – 86th Street between 12-13th Avenues. There isn’t even one ticket on it.

It was reported to 311 and the call was closed stating the problem had been resolved, yet the bus still remains on 86th Street.
Who has given these vehicles permission to park here and how come residents cars are ticketed minutes after an expired meter, but this bus (and other) can park for weeks out a time.
There must be an unspoken parking permit!
At the Bay Ridge Meeting with Captain Tolson, he said that he had the trucks towed at Poly Place. The next day, we took a ride and noticed that there are trucks lined up on 7th Avenue.
86th Street and Poly Place have many trucks and NOT ONE POLITICIAN IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE THEY DON’T CARE.

October 28, 2021Homeless Shelter Coming to 65th Street and 7th Avenue
Update: See the meeting that CB 10 had about this shelter (Here)

A homeless shelter is being planned for 7th Avenue and 65th Street in the empty gas station lot.

Yesterday, the American New York Chinese Association and Curtis Sliwa protested the shelter and demanded housing for the homeless.

The pandemic has been very hard on families. And this shelter is being planned for families. But the people marching against the shelter wouldn’t know that because the Councilman hasn’t shared the information with the community.

When people don’t have the information, it makes them afraid and they begin to think about the worst possible scenarios. Now imagine if someone shared this information months ago and continued to update about the shelter for families.

Curtis Sliwa is correct that they need temporary housing not a shelter.
For our area, Radiofree Bay Ridge revealed there were over 100 – 120 people homeless and Councilman Brannan put zero dollars into housing this year. (See here)
Oswald Feliz, a NYC Councilman in the Bronx, took office on April 15, 2021. In June, Oswald funded NYCHA developments in his area with 4.5 million dollars. (See here)
On November 4th, at 7:00 pm, Community Board 10 will have a Zoom meeting senior issues, housing, health and welfare committee. You can register to speak here
