September 26, 2021Sponsor Thanksgiving Dinner for a Family in Our Community This Year

Grandma’s Love is having the annual Thanksgiving Drive. Last year, the organization was able to feed 160 families with the community’s support.
Grandma’s Love works at some schools in our community. They supply backpacks with food to help families out. During Covid, the need increased of course. Theresa also makes sure the children get a special treat with the food.
Theresa Monteforte is the head of Grandma’s Love and she started the drive early while it’s not a busy season. $30 is all it costs to sponsor a family of four for Thanksgiving Dinner with fresh vegetables! You can use paypal on their site or venmo (see flyer above)
I remember the first time I read about Theresa Monteforte and Grandma’s Love. In the article, Monteforte explained that the Thanksgiving holiday was a something children talked about and bolded over when they returned to school after the long weekend. When I read it, I remember tears coming down my face because something as simple as talking about having a turkey dinner is so important to children and Theresa is an angel for undertanding that!
**If you have any free turkeys that you aren’t using or want to donate some special treats, contact [email protected]

September 26, 2021Yemeni’s Celebration in Bay Ridge

Some type of Yemeni celebration happened on 5th Avenue. It looked nice, but there was no news coverage of it.
There were no flyers or anyone talking about the event. (It may have had to do with this)
Captain Tolson was almost deliberately vague. (See here) Cpt. Tolson mentioned that the first Yemeni police captain was at the event. His precinct is in Jackson Heights.

I only knew about the event because people asked me what was happening.
It’s strange that information about a cultural event wasn’t shared with the community.
There is a Yemeni Heritage Day celebration coming up in October.

Yemen’s Independence Day in Yemen is November 30th.

September 26, 2021A Brooklyn Soldier is Buried 71 Years Later

Seventy-one years ago, an 18-year-old soldier from 46th Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn was killed in the Korean War.

Raymond A. Smith’s body was not located.

In March 2021, Smith’s remains were identified. This past Tuesday, the soldier’s family received his body at JFK Airport. The military’s honor guard and Port Authority Police were at the tarmac at the airport as well.

They brought his body to Clavin Funeral Home for a wake today. His name is not listed on Clavin’ site, but I saw his newphew speak on Channel 1 News. Smith will be buried in Greenwood Cemetary with military honors.
While this may just open old wounds for Smith’s sister, it may also be comforting to finally be able to bury her brother.

RIP Raymond Smith (finally).

September 25, 2021A Street Was Named for Dominick Della Rocca

Today, 69th Street and Shore Road was named after Dominick Della Rocca. He died in 1998. (See here)

He owned a restaurant in Bay Ridge named Della Rocca’s in the 1970’s that Bay Ridge residents said was on 69th Street. It’s been closed since 1986. (See here)
This street naming was announced yesterday on social media here, but there wasn’t an article about the man’s contributions or why that street was choosen for his name. This is when a press release would be useful, but pols in this area use the local press to promote themselves instead.
The only thing shared was this link and it shows some nice contributions around Brooklyn, but not here. He was the head of a charity organization for special needs children (Community of Mayors). They have a scholarship in his name.
It’s strange that 23 years after a man died, they named a street after him – who requested this and why wasn’t it done years ago? Dominick’s family lives in NJ. (See here)
