October 11, 2021OMNY Cards for Those Who Don’t Want to Take Their Phone Out at the Train Station

The Metrocard is being phased out by 2023. People have been using cell phones to pay their fares since 2019. Yet, many Metrocard users don’t want to take out their phone in a the train station because they fear it will be swiped by a thief who is waiting at the station.

Starting this month, a tap-and-go card, called the Omny card is being sold at 7Eleven. (Info here)
The Omny card cost $5.00 for the card and you have to load it with at least one dollar on it when you purchase it. This is being slowly rolled out, so it may not be available at your 7Eleven yet.
If you receive a reduced fare for the bus or train, the MTA will be coming out soon with the plan for the reduced fair with your Omni card.
