Happy New Year, Bay Ridge!

Bay Ridge, I wish you a year of good health and happiness.

Thank you for all of your messages and tips to help your neighbors. We realize how fortunate we are to have great neighbors who look out for each other.

I have loved meeting many of you this year and I hope 2022 allows us all to get together in a normal way again!

*To those who have allowed dogs and cats to be murdered every month in NYC and those who have remained silent, I’m not sure how you live with yourself. Romans 12:19.

Yemen Jewelry Store on 5th Avenue

I saw the name on the sign at 6928 5th Avenue. This is the name displayed on the store:

I used Google Translate on it and it translated to: Yemen Jewelry.

The store window display has many beautiful gold necklaces – everything is very sparkly!

Good luck to the owners of this beautiful place!

Malliotakis Helped People Become Citizens

Nicole Malliotakis shared that she helped more people become citizens. I am really happy to see this as people should have the ability to obtain citizenship.

Congresswoman Malliotakis has really worked hard to help people. I wish we saw more political offices stepping up and doing the paperwork and follow up for immigrants.

It was disappointing to see Councilman Brannan sponsor legislation to give green card holders the right to vote (see here), rather than to take the time to help people become citizens!

New NYC Property Tax Commission Report

Two days before 2022 begins, the NYC Property Tax Commission released another report. (See here)

*Not one elected leader in our area has written anything about this report.

The NYC Property Tax Commission said that homes should be taxed by the market value (same as the last report) and the tax rate should be 0.814 percent (which was missing from the old report)

The Property Tax Commission said this plan should be phased in during five years. Meaning: We won’t see relief unless Senator Gounardes acts!

The Property Tax Commission talked about targeted relief for seniors, veterans and people with mid and low incomes. It didn’t call for any modifications for people who have been overtaxed by NYC and NYS for years.

Senator Andrew Gounardes should have received the rate from the property tax commission before this report came out and we should see a plan on his website for our community (but there’s nothing there).

This has been a very light year for NYS legislatures. It’s discouraging Gounardes accepting PAC money when he is supposed to be representing people in this area. Gounardes didn’t meet with Mayor de Blasio to resolve the tax issue or do anything for home owners during Covid.

Last Spring, I also asked Mathylde Frontus to help us on this issue.

The Property Tax Commission could not find a reason for our community and others to continue to receive increases, but we did even last year. The property tax commission knew that using assessed value growth caps allowed for inequitable taxes to be collected.

By the first week of January 2022, Senator Gounardes should be rallying and protesting outside of Governor Hochul’s office, like the other senators do to be heard. Gounardes should be introducing a bill to help his community because the Property Tax Commission failed.

Senator Gounardes office is closed this week.

How does a senator close his office to the community when the Covid Omicron virus is surging through Brooklyn?

In July 2020, Councilman Justin Brannan said on Twitter that NYC Council gave home owners a tax break, yet we all received an increase in 2021! (See here)

Senator Gounardes did not step up for this community in the last three years. Gounardes continued to tell people that he had a circuit breaker bill in 2019-2020, (Senate bill 7540) but that went nowhere. (See here).

For 2021, he resubmitted the same bill (Senate bill S857) and he didn’t do anything to get it out of committee AGAIN.

The Circuit Breaker wouldn’t helped all home owners in the area that were being overcharged. This is what the Property Tax Commission showed:

Gounardes’ solution wasn’t going to do much for people.

The Property Tax Commission wants to slowly phase the new rate in during the next five years. Senator Gounardes should be stepping in because Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Marine Park home owners have paid their share for many years. *Incidentally, there are other neighborhoods in NYC where there unfair rates existed as well.

* One reason we may not have seen Senator Gounardes moving on property taxes —> Andrew Gounardes accepted A LOT of donations from people in 11215, especially from 2018 to 2020. The zip code 11215 belongs to Park Slope, an area that Senator Gounardes does not represent. (See here) I don’t know if all of these people are home owners, but I did find some of them in Acris. Why is 11215 funding Gounardes when Kevin Parker is the senator there?

Finally, the group of people who made up this Property Tax commission are named in the booklet. Senator Gounardes should have objected to at least one of those people and called for a property tax expert and a member from our community to be on the commission.

During the Brooklyn meeting, one of member on the Property Tax Commission did not show up for the Zoom meeting (yes I was there, but they have the videos up and you will be able to hear why she wasn’t there.)
