March Against Anti-Semitism in Brooklyn 1/2/22

Update: See the rally here.

On Sunday, January 2nd, Councilmember Inna Vernikov is holding a March on 86th Street and Bay Parkway at 12:00 pm. She organized this because of the incident at hate earlier this week on 86th Street in Bay Ridge.

The march is happening because of the awful incident that happened to two Jewish college students outside of Footlocker in Bay Ridge on December 26th (See here)

Originally the march was outside Footlocker on 86th Street in Bay Ridge (old flyer below). Councilman Brannan and Senator Gounardes should have backed her up. The reason for the march is to say people belong here. Moving the location, says they don’t.

Councilmember Vernikov’s district includes: includes Brighton Beach, Gravesend, Manhattan Beach and Midwood.

The NYPD did not mark this as a hate crime on Compstat.

Even though NYPD’s Hate Crime account on twitter shared this:

Update 12/30 : Fight Back Bay Ridge blamed the man for wearing the IDF sweatshirt. It’s very sad to see this as this is a diverse neighborhood and there is no reason for anyone to put their hands on anyone else.

Thankfully Brooklyn South Police’s message is a lot better:

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-351.png

And District Attorney, Eirc Gonzalez’ message is also correct:

Brian Fox, Bay Ridge Republicans and the Police Union – LBA, Call Out Anti-Semitism

This afternoon, Brian Fox, some Brooklyn Republicans and members of the police, LBA spoke on 86th Street and called out the Anti-Semitism.

I’m impressed that they took the time to say this was important.

Teens and young adults are watching this and they are seeing what’s allowed and tolerated in our community. I’m glad there are people willing to stand up against hate.

Brian Fox called out Councilman Brannan, Senator Gounardes and Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus for being MIA. Each made a statement on Twitter – (see here) but Brian Fox wants them to do something about it.

Curtis Sliwa spoke about the college students not receiving help from any of the people in the community – who were walking by on 86th Street.

Councilmember Inna Vernikov is holding a March Against Anti-Semitic Attacks on January 2nd – see here.

What’s Coming to Century’s Spot in Bay Ridge?

From Ripco Real Estate

People miss shopping at Century’s. A lot of people hoped that Century’s would re-open. Some people dreamed about Trader Joes taking a place on 86th Street.

Today, I saw Ripco Real Estate has a portfolio with all seven of the buildings for lease. It included TJ Maxx on 86th Street and the other Century building on 87th Street. (See here)

The possibilities for this location are endless – let’s hope some great businesses decide to move in!

Chase Bank on 86th St in Bay Ridge Closed Today

Chase at 413 – 86th Street in Bay Ridge is closed.

The sign on the door read: “Our branch is temporarily closed due to New York City’s Covid-19 Workplace Vaccination Order.” (Like this one)

On Monday, December 27th, workers in New York City who interact with the public had to show proof they have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine as per Mayor de Blasio’s order.

Chase on 86th Street is the second bank in Bay Ridge to be closed this week. Chase Bank in Downtown Brooklyn is experiencing the same problem – see here AND Borough Park is also seeing the same – see here

Barclay Center Opened A Sensory Center Named After Grayson Matthews, Son of JWoww from Jersey Shore

Barclay Center now has the Grayson Matthews Sensory Center.

Jenni Farley (aka Jwoww) from the reality television show Jersey Shore, opened the sensory center in her son’s name. (Story here)

Farley’s son, Grayson went to the Barclay Center a few years ago for a wrestling event and experienced a lot of stress from the noise. (See the room)

Now people who need a quiet space because of the sound or even the lights, they can go to the Grayson Matthews Sensory Center and decompress.

Jenni Farley said that one in six people have sensory issues. She said that they will be working on creating a sensory room at Nework Airport next because she travels out of there.

The Brooklyn Cyclones opened a sensory room in 2019 (see here), back then it was something nice for a place to have, but by now every sports arena or center should have one just to be more inclusive and help families.

Coney Island’s New Years Eve Fireworks 2021

I can not find any information about Coney Island fireworks show for New Years Eve in Brooklyn this year 2021 to 2022.

I called 311 and they said no one in Coney Island, Brooklyn has a permit for fireworks for New Years Eve.

Coney Island fireworks would have been perfect for New Years Eve because it’s a nice way for people to be outdoors with each other.

Other years, Councilman Mark Treyger set this up. (See here) Treyger is term-limited, but I don’t think he would have dropped the ball on this. That would be a strange way to leave the neighborhood.

Video of Shooting on 68th Street in Bay Ridge – Suspects Still on the Loose

There was a shooting on December 21st at 12:55 am at 308 68th Street in Bay Ridge. (Info here)

The perps approached a 33-year-old man with a gun and shot him in the leg in the apartment vestibule.

The suspects fled in a white vehicle and are still on the loose. (Source) It’s strange that we have to get information from Bronx News because the precinct and politicians aren’t sharing any information.

NYPD Crime Stoppers has a reward for information. Call 1-800-577-TIPS confidentially.

Governor Kathy Hochul Called Out Hate When Senator Andrew Gounardes Didn’t

Yesterday, Governor Kathy Hochul had no problem calling out the antisemitism that happened in Bay Ridge on Sunday around 10:45 am. (See here)

But not one leader in Bay Ridge said anything about it.

Hours after Governor Hochul’s tweet, Senator Andrew Gounardes finally made a statement on Twitter about it. (See here) Why didn’t Gounardes make a statement on Sunday when this hate happened in our community?

** Andrew Gounardes did not share this information to the community on Facebook. This is important to note because on Twitter, Gounardes plays politics with other Democrats. A lot of our community is on Facebook, but Gounardes did not share this incident of hate on either page he has on Facebook.

Yesterday, the NYPD shared a video of the perp. Why didn’t Senator Gounardes share the video from the NYPD? Other Brooklyn representatives had no problem sharing this. (See here) *Update: Gounardes retweeted the NYPD’s post with no message.

UPDATE: The Anti-Defamation League has offered $5000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of people responsible for this act. (Source) If you know anything, you can report it here. Senator Gounardes and other politicians did not share this information as of 12/29.

Senator Gounardes has not been good at calling out hate. Gounardes was silent when this video went viral. Many people shared it with him on social media and he didn’t say anything. (See here)

Brannan didn’t make a statement on Sunday either (or before Governor Hochul on Monday). Brannan’s tweet is very general and doesn’t say that the hate happened in his community.

Brannan also did not share this incident to the community on Facebook – this is important. Update: On 12/28, Brannan shared this. He did not share that The Anti-Defamation League offered $5000. (Source)

On Sunday, December 26th, Councilman Brannan posted a strange tweet. While he only won by a small margin, he should know this language isn’t appropriate.

Even former congressman Max Rose posted a message yesterday before Senator Gounardes and Councilman Brannan yesterday.

Rose was Congressman when the “Death to America. Death to Israel video in Bay Ridge was made (See here). Rose was silent with the other politicians.
