Graffiti Outside Restaurant – Is It a Hate Crime?

Today, the owners of Schnitzel Haus Restaurant at 7319 5th Avenue saw their outdoor dining area was vandalized. Their camera recorded three individuals defacing their property.

Normally, we don’t want to give graffiti attention. The people who do it are trying to get people’s attention or just bored kids and don’t care if they are destroying property. (Like this)
While most of this looks like bad graffiti of some bored individuals. there are some aspects that could make this a hate crime.
The word “hate” does not mean rage or dislike, but a bias against people or groups.

This is a German restaurant that was decorated with a German and Russian flag bunting that was defaced by graffiti. In the video, it clearer to see the graffiti on the flags. (See here) Was this place chosen or did the individuals do several businesses along 5th Avenue?

Brian Fox started the South Brooklyn Coalition to Save Small Businesses. Fox visited the restaurant to support the owners. They contacted the police’s, NYPD hate crimes unit.

Fox said there is video of this perps doing this so that should help the police. In a few days maybe they will release the video too.
On the wall was written: “Go to hell in step in Ali’s Arms.” (Or) in my arms. While this is written in English – what does “in step” mean in this instance?
On another wall, someone wrote: “It’s Me Look at her” near a picture of a woman drinking beer in the photo. Arrows were drawn to point to the woman drinking alcohol. An evil eye is over the woman’s photo. The word Ali was written near the photo a few times on the wall.

There are also this strange symbol:

Brian Fox released this message about the incident. He also called for current politicians to take action.

While at least one of the people involved in this is hateful, another appears to be a teenage girl. She drew a big heart and wasn’t feeling too hateful.

Is it possible to charge one of the individuals for hate and not the others?
We wish there was more support for local businesses owners. Past leaders visited businesses and offered their support when incidents came up.
Why hasn’t Senator Gounardes and Councilman Brannan stopped in and assisted these owners? While it isn’t possible to paint over this, the politicians should have brought some tarps to cover over the graffiti while this is being investigated.

January 28, 2022Brooklyn Papers Aren’t Reporting About Asian Hate Crimes – Where’s Hoa Nguyen’s Story?

We are lucky that real reporters in NYC, like CeFaan Kim are taking Asian hate seriously because local papers in Brooklyn are not reporting about it. (See here)
Hoa Nguyen is a Brooklyn grandmother that has lived in America for 40 years.
On Wednesday, January 19th, walked to the grocery store near 360 Classon Avenue in Clinton Hill. A man a man attacked her while she was crossing the street. He punched her in the head multiple times. A person called the police and they immediately came and arrested him.
Hoa Nguyen said she forgives the man, even if he isn’t sorry. She also said she doesn’t want him to go to jail. A Go-Fund Me account was set up for this grandmother. (See here)

A 51-year-old homeless man was arrested for this crime.
“The defendant stated (he) punched Hoa Nguyen (because he) doesn’t like how Chinese people look; thinks Chinese people look like measles; and doesn’t like Chinese people looking at (him).”
Asians fighting for Justice shared this:

While our local papers continue to print one-sided stories fed to them from politicians, the real news is not being reported, even a WEEK AFTER THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED!
Politicians need to stop the press releases so people know that Asian Hate is not over in Brooklyn. Journalists need to stop working remotely and get on the scene to get the real news.

January 27, 2022Senator Andrew Gounardes is Disingenuous About Vision Zero and Street Safety

Other state politicians were sharing the chart above, but Senator Andrew Gounades did not.
Andrew doesn’t want want to see Bay Ridge in dark purple or the fact at the top where our District (43) was singled out for the high number of fatalities.
We have so much work to do to make sure that no parent, senior, or pedestrian of any age lives in fear of crossing the street.
— Senator Andrew Gounardes (@Sen_Gounardes) January 27, 2022
And the place to start with that work is by passing the Crash Victims Rights & Safety Act — now.
We need #SafeStreetsNowNY@TransAlt @NYC_SafeStreets pic.twitter.com/r7EIwHc5w1
Gounardes told us about a family member who died in an accident. Why did he remain silent when Justin Brannan broke the law repeatedly – 16 times? (See here) Many politicians think they are above the law and the rules don’t apply to them and their friends.

If street safety was a concern for Andrew, he wouldn’t have been silent when Brannan’s driving record came out. Gounardes has also been silent about the red light camera lobbyists had lobbied Brannan. (See here) Making legislation for lobbyists, rather than for the area he represents has our area in purple and people, including children dying.
Further, we wouldn’t see Gounardes accepting money from the car industry, especially not after Carol’s death last Spring.

We should have seen Democrats speak out against Andrew Gounardes accepting PACs money from the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association which represents car dealerships in our area.

We have told Gounardes to return the money, but since he thinks YOU don’t know, he hasn’t returned the money.
