Open Streets Approved for School on Ridge Blvd.

Charles Fasano, the head of Bay Ridge Prep spoke about the school using the Open Streets Program for the students from 8:30 am – 2:30 pm originally.

The Open Streets Program allows the school to put barriers across Ridge Blvd. between 81st and 82nd Streets, so cars can not pass. People will still be able to use the sidewalk.

The Open Streets Program allows the school to bring 200 students outside each day. Prior to this, Bay Ridge Prep used to bring students to the park. (Pic) Fasano noted that there are problems are the park (someone should be addressing this). Fasano wanted to use the Open Streets Program for safety.

Residents of Ridge Blvd, who are neighbors of the school, sent a representative who read a letter explaining how taxing this was on the neighborhood in prior years. Two of the homes have no access to their driveways every day when the school uses the Open Streets Program.

Many residents in Bay Ridge work at home and feel that Bay Ridge Prep using the Open Streets Program causes traffic and noise issues. The residents believe the school can provide alternative outdoor space to the students without lowering their quality of life.

Charles Fasano was open to compromising and said he could reduce the hours to 10:30 am to 2:20 pm, which is 50% less time than originally requested. From 12:15 – 1:00 pm is lunch and the school will use Ridge Blvd. from 81st to 82nd Streets for all the students to be outside. Fasano said that the students are going to do most of the activities in front of their school building.

Charles Fasano said he will move the barrier and the students when residents need to get to their driveways. Steve from Community Board 10 said the school needs to have someone man this part of the barrier so the residents can have access to their property.

Residents told Community Board 10 in the chat that the hours aren’t much different than what they were last year and they haven’t seen much change.

Some Community Board 10 Members spoke out strongly on behalf of the residents! Barbara, Steve, Judith, Preston and Habib did a good job speaking for the community.

Barbara was a school administrator and she said having 100 students outside at any time would create a lot of noise. She also knew residents in the apartment building were not happy with the noise from Bay Ridge Prep.

Preston from Community Board 10 shared that he lives near the school and that the traffic conditions around dismissal outside Bay Ridge Prep have gone unaddressed for years.

Community Board 10 recommended that the hours be modified in the application. They also requested that it be approved only with if Bay Ridge Prep had someone to man the barrier for residents with cars.

Community Board 10 voted 14 opposed and 17 in favor. The use of of Open Streets was opposed for Bay Ridge Prep.

CB 10 Voted Against Telecommunications High School Using Open Streets on 67th Street

Telecommunications High School put in an Open Streets Application for the full closure of 67th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenue for the hours of 7:45 am and 4:45 pm for the full year.

Many residents opposed this closure because the students can walk across the street from the school to Leif Ericson Park.

Community Board 10 voted to deny this application because:

a) Leif Ericson Park across the street from the school.

b) St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church Church is next to Telecommunications High School and people won’t be able to get to chuch. (Elderly residents are brought by car to the church.)

c) The Fire Department is nearby and uses 67th Street.

Twenty-five Community Board 10 members were against this Open Streets Program. Three people were opposed (they wanted the school to have use of the Open Streets Program.)

Mathylde Frontus Has a Challenger – District 46

Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus is facing a primary challenger this June. Dionne Brown-Jordan is challenging Frontus.

\

I saw Dionne campaigning in Bay Ridge. I stopped to ask her a few questions. She was easy to talk to.

Dionne Brown-Jordan has been a Democrat District Leader with Mark Treyger for several years. She is also the president of the Southern Brooklyn Democrats.

Dionne Brown was born and raised in Coney Island. She went to Abraham Lincoln High School, Kingsborough, Touro College for her Bachelor’s Degree and Phoenix for her Master’s Degree in Psychology. Dionne is the author who has published under the name D.L. Jordan. You can find out more about Dionne here.

Social Media: Dionne’s Twitter account here and her instagram

As a District Leader, Dionne Brown recently honored women and men in District 46 (See here). I know hundreds of women in District 46, but I didn’t know any of these women, so it may have just been for Coney Island. (See here – scroll to the right to see more photos)

Update: In June 2022, she held a men of honor ceremony. (See here)

Dionne marched with Michael and Ari for Israel.

Finally, Dionne Brown served as chief of staff to former Assemblywoman, Pam Harris. (Info) Dionne said she enjoyed that job. She attended community events, shared information with the community and helped constituents with things like housing. Source

While I don’t think Mathylde Frontus represents me or most people I know that live in District 46, I do think Frontus is a good person and ethical. I don’t like Frontus’ views on bail reform and I don’t care for her “Community Think Tank” meetings because the moderators of the groups are not home owners, so the topic of property taxes was not discussed at either meeting we attended online. Frontus has failed to write legislation to help home owners in our district.

Bouziri Recalls N Train Ride With the Shooter

Richard Bouziri from Bay Ridge took the N train to work on Tuesday morning. Unfortunately, Bouziri was in the same train car as the shooter.

Bouziri recalled the ride and he said that when the shooting began, minutes felt like a lifetime. He laid on top of a woman to protect her. Bouziri told the woman that they would be okay, but he thought it was the last moments of life because he kept hearing bullets.

When the train pulled into the 36th Street station, Bouziri got off the train and kept looking back. Someone in the station filmed the train pulling into the station and Bouziri exiting the train:

Richard Bouziri said everyone on that train is a survivor. Bouziri is doing his best to move on. Bouziri said at night he remembers the smoke, the people screaming and the bullets.

The Spectrum News reporter said that Bouziri went to get his car fixed because he doesn’t want to get on the train right now. Richard Bouziri said he isn’t leaving Bay Ridge over this.

We are glad the shooter had bad aim and no one died!
