Justin Brannan Says He is Number 2 – So Why Didn’t He Pass the Small Business Jobs Survival Act Yet?

If you received Councilman Justin Brannan’s Spring newsletter, you would have seen him tooting that he is number 2!

This should be great news for Bay Ridge small business owners, because as the new Number 2 in City Council, Justin Brannan will be able to take immediate action by putting SBJSA (Small Business Jobs Survival Act) to a vote.

SBJSA will create a fair commercial lease renewal process for small businesses. And communities won’t have to see empty storefronts all over their neighborhoods.

In 2020, Brannan was interested in helping small businesses in NYC:

Brannan introduced a bill for small businesses, but it wasn’t effective and didn’t go through. Brannan wanted owners to engage in good faith commercial rent leases. (See here) Owners aren’t going to do that, so even if Brannan’s bill went through, it wouldn’t have changed things for most businesses. Now that Justin Brannan is a NYC Council leader, he can make a major change to NYC for small businesses and bring SBJSA to a vote.

Recently, Peppino’s Restaurant in Bay Ridge let us know that it was a lot harder for businesses to make money, due to inflation. (See here)

Norma’s Arts and Crafts Store on 3rd Avenue received a large rent increase and she needed to close. (See here) If Brannan is able to get SBJSA, small businesses will be able to negotiate 10 year leases.

The bill has been in NYC Council for many years, but no one is brave enough to stand up and get it done. Corey Johnson was going to do it, but he got sidetracked and didn’t get it done. (See video)

Whose against SBJSA? REBNY – the real estate industry. Did they sidetrack Johnson? If Brannan doesn’t step up for small businesses, it will show he is a REBNY sweetheart. If you were the number 2 person in NYC Council – wouldn’t you have gotten some things done for Bay Ridge as soon as you became #2?

Brannan knows neighborhoods like ours have been waiting a long time for this bill. NYC Council need to o more to protect these small business owners.

Why haven’t local papers covered this story? Journalist don’t live in Bay Ridge, they print press releases and Justin isn’t going to tell them what he isn’t doing.

NYC Council has already researched SBJSA, so there should not be any more delays stopping this bill from passing before the Summer, especially when Brannan is #2.

Butterfly Tea at Brooklyn Brew Cafe in Bay Ridge

What a beautiful drink! This drink is called butterfly tea – it’s a color changing herbal lemon hibiscus iced tea from Brooklyn Brew Cafe!

Go grab your favorite person (yes, it might be your child) and enjoy a drink and the Spring flowers! Some of me best memories of my Dad are from doing the simplest things.

Their avacado toast looks amazing:

Brooklyn Brew Cafe is at 310 79th Street in Bay Ridge.

Cats Around Fontbonne Are Missing – Not TNR

Neighborhood cats are missing around Fontbonne Hall Academy High School in Bay Ridge.

Some Ridgites saw traps on Fontbonne’s property and thought there was a TNR action going on in the area because this area has been targeted for TNR several years ago. (See here)

The traps on Fontbonne’s property were put out late at night and gone in the morning.

Fontbonne High School has gates which are locked. Would someone have climbed the gates to put down the traps?

TNR stands for Tray, Neuter and Release the cats back to the area. It’s a way to help control a fast growing stray cat population.

The Bay Ridge Community Cats group is made up of a group of animal lovers who are trained to safely trap cats, get them neutered and return them to the area where they came from. This group has a lot of support in the community because they do the right thing for animals. (See here)

Cats who have been neutered through a TNR action usually have their ear tipped like this:

The Bay Ridge Community Cats groups lets the community know when they are doing a TNR because they know Ridgites love these animals. They did not put out any traps this past week.

People haven’t been able to find the missing cats on any rescue sites. Were the cats exterminated?

The kind Ridgite, who was caring for these cats just wants them back. If you know anything about this removal of these cats, can you leave me a message below (comments don’t publish)

Someone Was Raped on April 10th – 4th Avenue & 72nd Street – 3rd Degree

On Sunday, April 10th, someone was raped on 4th Avenue and 72nd Street. (Source: Compstat – at the top pull down Brooklyn South and then 68th Precinct)

It is classified as Third Degree Rape, which is when someone engages in sexual intercourse:

  • With someone who is incapable of consent for some reason other than being less than 17;

  • Without the other person’s consent, if the lack of consent is not attributable to incapacity to consent; or

  • With a person who is less than 17, if he or she is 21 or older

No one seems to care.

I do.

Andrew Gounardes Doubles Down on Gerrymandering and Fights on Twitter With Conservative Party Leader

Andrew Gounardes KNOWS the maps were thrown out because they are unconstitutional. (See info here)

Gounardes knows the disastrous map below was made to give him an advantage. Andrew vote for this map in front of wife, family and neighbors.

We should have seen Andrew Gounardes apologize for using bad judgement and voting for maps which gerrymandered Brooklyn!

Instead, Gounardes tries to justify gerrymandering – it’s wrong when anyone does it.

Fighting with a Conservative Party leader on twitter is just wasting time.

Bridgeview Pharmacy in Bay Ridge Closed

Bridgeview Pharmacy on 3rd Avenue and 89th Street closed their doors permanently last night.

The cost of running a business keeps increasing as rents continues to climb. Many businesses aren’t making enough money to stay open.

Bridge Pharmacy was a great neighborhood place. I realized that at the start of the pandemic when they were stocked with all our pandemic needs.

Prescriptions have been transferred to Rite Aid on 3rd Avenue and 93rd Street. Tomorrow (Friday), Maria will start working there.

People who go to Bridge Pharmacy probably don’t want to go to Rite Aid (or else they already would have). These customers like the small store and the advice they received at Bridge Pharmacy, so what other small pharmacies are in the area?

Narrows Pharmacy on 4th Avenue and 100th Street *Three pharmacists who will talk with customers and are helpful. They will try and contact doctors if your prescription is ending.

New Victory on 92nd Street and 4th Avenue – the pharmacist is Chris is helpful.

Farmacon 8007 5th Avenue 718-238-1090. A lot of people love this place.

Neugards Pharmacy on 3 Avenue and 74th Street. Michael from Waldinger’s has been there since Waldingers closed.

If you want to travel to Dyker Heights, there is Dyker Heights Pharmacy at 8016-13TH Avenue

Good luck to Steve, Maria and the staff. This Mom and Pop local pharmacy was a gem and this is a loss to our neighborhood.
