Bay Ridge, Will You Hang A Rainbow Flag?

Last Summer, a group called GayRidge made an Instagram account. (See here)

Something they wrote stayed with me all year.

The GayRidge social media account explained that they counted all of the rainbow flags displayed at businesses on 3rd Avenue during Pride Month last June.

Out of the 431 storefronts on 3rd Avenue from 68th Street to 100th Street, only three businesses displayed a flag for Pride Month (Matter, Hom and Harp).

That’s Less than 3/4 of 1% of the businesses. (See here)

They shared this picture:

GayRidge offered to bring Bay Ridge businesses a sticks of a rainbow for their window. Some businesses accepted the offer. (See here)

How many preteens and teens who are part of the LGBT community (or questioning) are wondering why there are so few pride flags in Bay Ridge? The rest of NYC is covered with rainbow flags in June.

Life is not easy for many LGBTQ teens. And the pandemic has been especially hard on these teens. “LGBTQ students are twice as likely to have considered or attempted suicide during the pandemic,” said the CDC. (Source)

I went to Amazon and found a 3×5 rainbow flag for $5.85 (this one) (with tax – $6.37)

I’m sharing what we are doing because there are a lot of flag-type people in Bay Ridge, who would gladly put up a rainbow for the month of June to send out some love to people in our community.

If are a business owner on 3rd or 5th Avenue, please put up a flag for kids, families and your customers.

If you don’t have room for a flag, you could always do some rainbow hearts – see here

Amazon also has a pack of 50 small rainbow flags for $13.99 – in case you need a lot (See here) In the reviews, there are pictures so you can see the size of them.

Finally, I leave you with this picture that a son received from his father after the father hung a flag on his store window and asked his son if was hung correctly. The son is part of the LGBTQ community and his father’s message of love was clear.

A little flag can send a big message of support.

If you are a member of GayRidge, I’m sorry you had to count all of the businesses last year, but I am glad you did and shared it.

Ft. Hamilton High School Evacuated Again

There was another bomb scare at Fort Hamilton High School today and everyone was evacuated. After the school was checked, the students and staff returned to the school.

The first day no one was ready for it. Today they may have been. But the next time it happens, they will be waiting for the call and the unlucky teen is going to get caught.

New District Maps for Bay Ridge – Hooray!

THESE ARE PRELIMINARY MAPS. By Friday the final maps will be out.

The court-appointed special master, Jonathan Cervas made new districts because Democrats, like Andrew Gounardes, voted to gerrymander Brooklyn and that is unconstitutional. (More info on the maps)

This is the new senate district map:

Bay Ridge is cut into three senate districts – 26, 17 and 22.

When I first saw the divisions on a preview map, I thought that’s terrible that they split out neighborhood. Then….

Then I thought about it and realized they created a district that is more fair for the community. Whoever is chosen for that community will represent those people.

Neither Republicans or Democrats were able to be fair here, so I appreciate these new district lines. Look at them with fresh eyes tomorrow!

The three districts are:

District 26 – Bay Ridge, Sunset Park and Park Slope (in red below).

District 17 is a Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bath Beach. (In green below)

District 23 in yellow has the Fort Hamilton Army Base with Staten Island and Coney Island.

You can see which district you are in by going here to view the street map.

The white outline is District 17 and Andrew Gounardes is not part of that district!!! Wooohoooooo. Hopefully you made it out too!

This is the Congressional District Map for CD 11

These maps look a lot more fair than the maps that Andrew Gounardes wanted! It was disappointing to see this politician choose to gerrymander Bay Ridge very quietly.

District 11 contains Sunset Park, but does not contain Park Slope. Thankfully, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Brad Lander won’t be in this district.

Both Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler already announced that they are running for District 12.

Nadler:

Andrew Gounardes wanted gerrymandered maps so it could be an easy win for Democrats and they wouldn’t have to work for their seat. No politician should be able to hold onto a community using gerrymandering.

This is the plan for these maps:

The Asian Wave Alliance Acknowledged Malliotakis’ Support of Their Community

I’ve seen Nicole Malliotakis in Brooklyn on different days supporting the Asian Community, as they fought for education and public safety.

The sad thing is that parents shouldn’t have had to fight to maintain high quality education when Richard Carranza was the Chancellor. He didn’t understand that leadership meant including these parents who are very engaged.

Thankfully Chancellor Banks recognizes the need for different types of education to meet the needs of children in NYC. Eric Adams chose a great leader for NYC schools.

Ft Hamilton HS Evacuated – Bomb Threat Today

Around 10:40 am, the NYPD evacuated Fort Hamilton High School after there was an anonymous bomb threat Monday morning.

At first the school did a lockdown – then they evacuated everyone. (See videos that students shared here)

The NYPD search the FHHS and didn’t find anything, so the call is considered a prank. The NYPD did the right thing in evacuating the school.

Around 1:00 pm, Assemblywoman Frontus shared this:
