The 68th Precinct published crime statistics this week here.
On social media, people in our neighborhood discussed the rise in crime in the 68th Precinct.

All I could see was that there were two more rapes this past week.

Tuesday, March 28th – 3rd Avenue and Bay Ridge Avenue – Rape 1
Friday, March 31st at 8:00 pm – 12th Avenue and 66th Street – Rape 1

April 3, 2023CB 10 Police and Public Safety Doesn’t Talk About the Police or Rapes

For some reason, the members of Community Board 10 police committee only talk about liquor licenses for restaurants and businesses in Bay Ridge.
But other districts do! (See here)
CB 10 discussed the liquor license for Status Q Billiards. This is for a new owner of the business (but the old owners are staying on).

HEY NEIGHBORS TWO WOMEN IN BAY RIDGE REPORTED THEY WERE RAPED LAST WEEK. (See here)
Little Frankie’s at 29 – 71st Street also applied for a liquor license. This was formerly Lombardo’s.

Why is Community Board 10’s Police Committee not discussing the community, policing and crime?
Why isn’t Chris, the head of the Committee bringing up the rise in crime in our area?

April 2, 2023Why is the Parks Department Pushing An Immigrant Seller Out of Sunset Park Like This?

I always thought the Parks Department job was one that must be very relaxing.
What is happening in sunset park. You get what you vote for. This is not ok. @danielsgoldman @NYCCouncil38 @marcelaforny @queenoftheclick @JCAndersonNYC @ProtectSunset @MoisaQuasi pic.twitter.com/8Yw0MQkQLE
— Erik Frankel (@ErikFrankel) April 2, 2023
When I saw the video of six NYC Parks Department workers pushing on one man, I thought the man must have done something seriously wrong.
The man was selling items at the park to supplement his income. NYC is a lot more expensive now! He didn’t have a permit…but is that a reason to handle him LIKE THIS?
When did Parks Department start physically removing sellers from a park?
This man was handled as if he is a thief.
For everyone else selling without a license, the police tickets the person and they tell them to move on. Here, it looks like several uniformed officers are standing by.
Politicians, like Senator Andrew Gounardes like to take pictures in Sunset Park, but whose standing up for immigrants spoken to respectfully.
Another video was shared on the Citizen App. (See here)

April 1, 2023Open Streets at Bay Ridge Prep Failed – Ridge Blvd.

When Bay Ridge Prep applied for the Open Streets Program during the pandemic, many people thought it was a good idea. Who would be against giving the students a fresh area to play during the pandemic?
During this weeks, Community Board 10 meeting, we heard from neighbor after neighbor how intrusive the open streets program was in this location.
Open Streets works in some areas because the streets are very different – they are quiet side streets. Ridge Blvd is a busy Avenue.
Charles Fassano, the Principal originally said he was only going to have the students on Ridge Blvd. from 81st to 82nd Street and no students on the side streets. The barricades were supposed to be the only thing on 81st and 82nd Street.
When things started to go wrong on Ridge Blvd., no elected leaders stepped in for these neighbors! Years ago, the City Council Representative or a Senator would call the principal and smooth things over.
Neighbors of the school showed a video of how loud a class of students were outside of their home. (See video at 8:00 minutes)
One neighbor had a video of a student kicking a ball completely down a driveway unsupervised. If that child was hurt on that neighbor’s property, the parents would have sued the home owners!
Finally, we saw how intrusive it was as the neighbors of the school tried to enter or leave their home. (Youtube video 10:14 and 12:18) Principal Fasano told the community it would take just 20 seconds for residents to go in and out because Fasano’s staff would take care of it. (Youtube video 6:46)
The Open Streets Program stopped residents from being able to leave or they had to wait to enter their driveway. Principal Fassano tried to throw this on the home owners by saying the school gave out a cell phone number for them to call. Yet, this home owner never received a cell phone number.
Runners came to the Community Board 10 Meeting to say that they weren’t allowed to run on the street. Some runners said that teachers and students made remarks to the runners on the street.
Thank you to everyone who showed up to speak for Bay Ridge and to help these residents, who have been living like this for years!
Principal Fasano only admitted that the school wouldn’t allow scooters through because they were going 30 Mph and it was dangerous.
Small business owners complained that they couldn’t travel easily in the area because of traffic detours.
Community Board 10 members: Doris, Steve and Stephanie strongly stood up for the neighbors of the school. Stephanie said this is not an Open Street – this is a closed street being used by a private school!
Charles Fasano, Bay Ridge Prep’s Principal defended his staff. Yet, he didn’t seem to realize how burdensome the open streets program had been on the neighbors of the school. If Fasano took the neighbors complaints seriously from the start, there may have been a different outcome. If he is a good man, he will end the program immediately.
To our neighbors on Ridge Blvd., we hope you don’t have to put up with this one more day. Community Board 10 please vote against Open Streets in this location!
Principal Fassano should walk his students to the park for fresh air and stop inconveniencing his neighbors! Everyone uses that park and there are very few problems. If Principal Fasano finds there is trouble at the park, he should call the police for help. We have great police officers in Bay Ridge, especially these officers.

March 31, 2023RIP Patrick Flynn

I was sad to hear that Patrick Flynn died.
His wake is at Aievoli Funeral Home 1275 – 65th Street on Tuesday, April 4 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
Patrick hadn’t been having an easy time. Sadly, NYC’s system failed Patrick. How did so many different departments not help him?
All day I couldn’t stop thinking about how this could have been prevented.
Patrick is with God – RIP. Prayers for his family and friends.

March 30, 2023Brutal Mugging on 13th Avenue and 73rd Street – Man Knocked Unconscious

Last night, a 55-year-old man was punched from behind on 13th Avenue and 73rd Street in Dyker Heights at 7:45 p.m. The man fell down and hit his head on the ground outside of Den Mini Market. (Story here)
The thief kicked the man in the head and stole his wallet.
The suspect wore a gray sweatshirt, light blue jeans, light blue cap and black and white sneakers.
The victim went to the hospital, but there was no update. We hope our neighbor recovers quickly.
It’s more than 24-hours later and Councilman Brannan and Senator Gounardes haven’t mentioned this crime.
Dyker Heights – vote these politicians out – they don’t care! No one is even warning 13th Avenue residents that this thief is still on the loose and can do it again!
And yes, this is Senator Gounardes district.

March 30, 2023Justin Brannan Tweet for Tax Incentives for Developers – Vote Justin Brannan Out!

Justin Brannan is not an expert about housing. How do we know that? Brannan put ZERO DOLLARS towards housing – EVERY year.
Homeless men and women ride the R train into our neighborhood every day for years. Councilman Brannan has not helped them get housing. He took photos in the train station with Gounardes and put them on Twitter.
We watched other council members put money into housing, but not ours.
Brannan danced for REBNY when they wanted to change office space into housing. (Info)
Justin Brannan used his seat as head of finance to get these tax breaks for a developers. 420-A is over and Brannan still pushed for this.
When will the Bay Ridge Democrats stand up against Brannan? In 2017, the Bay Ridge Democrats said Brannan could stand up to lobbyists and developers:

Haven’t we all had enough of developers and lobbyists winning with Justin Brannan? (Info) From this article, we know lobbying went] on in our area, even though he wasn’t registered with NYC to lobby.

March 29, 2023Brannan’s Tweet From Last Week Doesn’t Match This Week’s Article

The sale of cannabis isn’t legal in Brooklyn yet, but the Brooklyn Paper said it will be soon (See story)

Last week, Councilman Brannan’s responsed to someone finding a weed dispensary in Bay Ridge that sells chocolate flavored shrooms:

Today, journalist Kirstyn Brendlen did a story about Brooklyn stores being able to sell weed soon. Brendlen missed Brannan’s One Love comment and strangely the journalist didn’t speak to other representatives.

Councilman Brannan realized he is supposed to be speaking out against the illegal weed shops and calling for enforcement, so he tweeted with a link to the Brooklyn Paper.

We need a new representative who doesn’t play on Twitter and flips back and forth.
