CB 11 Meeting’s Are Better Than CB 10’s

Community Board 11 held a virtual meeting tonight on Zoom. This meeting did not discuss the 86th Street and 14th Avenue building – that meeting was supposed to be on May 4th, but they shared the information above that the application was withdrawn.

I thought CB 11’s meeting was going to be horrible because the Brooklyn Borough President’s staffer was there with his slide deck.

It’s no secret that lobbyists win with Antonio Reynoso, but it was actually informative. (See Brooklyn’s Plan here)

The meeting highlighted some problems that I never saw Community Board 10 talk about.

First up was the filthy air near Owl’s Head Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sunset Park.

Look at the map above – poor Sunset Park has a Particle Mass of 2.5, which means it is dangerous for people’s health!

Also Reynoso’s staffer said that they want to make parking for residents in Brooklyn. While Reynoso supports cyclists, he drives a car. (See here)

Reynoso’s staffer breezed by the waterfront issues. Pay attention here – there’s way too many people who are interested in Brooklyn’s waterfront AND Andrew Gounardes made a waterfront district for himself.

Finally, they discussed housing, but the 86th Street and 14th Avenue property was not spoken about. This might be why people think the housing fight is not over.

Marnee and Laurie know the problems of the community well – they both told Ethan from the Borough Presidents office that his presentation was not complete because it did not include the 800 to 1000 units coming to Cropsey Avenue (but none of them are affordable units). That has to be the development that Councilman Brannan was lobbied over. (See here)

Can you imagine that Justin Brannan did not include affordable units in the new buildings! All of those units and none of them have affordable apartments!

They discussed the sewer problems, as well as the overcrowded schools. Ethan didn’t say he was going to help or do anything after Marnee explained that the area smells like a treatment plant sometimes. Ross said that other communities need to have their fair share, as there are already existing problems in Community Board 11.

On May 18th, the Brooklyn Borough President is having a meeting about the plan for Brooklyn – information here.

Stanley Ng – District 43 NYC Council Candidate

Brooklyn, Stanley Ng is the best candidate to represent the new district. He has worked with both Democrats and Republicans because he’s the type of person who gets along with everyone. Vote for him if you want safer streets and stronger schools.

Some of the other candidates worked in current politicians office – don’t vote for them! Let’s get new people to help the community!

Dyker Heights, You Have Good News! 86th Street Rezoning Has Been Withdrawn

The rezoning project for 86th Street has been withdrawn. This is great news not only for for 85th Street and 14th Avenue residents, but for all of Dyker Heights.

What I saw from the Community Board 11 was the Brooklyn I have known my whole life – one neighbors have each others backs. I cried every time, residents from 85th Street spoke and cheered when each neighbor cited another reason why a rezoning was the wrong area. Each person who spoke showed how much they loved their community.

The owner must have realized how much of an impact it was having on his neighbors and is a good guy. He could have gone ahead with it as e already invested a lot. (Thank you Tommy!)

Some people are questioning if this is really the end of the rezoning project (it’s an election year) and they know our area has lobbyists winning because of Brannan. (See here and here)

Why didn’t Brannan attend the meeting? Because the people in that area have been gerrymandered out of his district. Don’t believe me? See the map here. They have no influence on the November election!

This is what gerrymandering looks like. District maps were changed to help politicians win elections.

Click here to see this map larger

Brooklyn pay close attention, this is not the only rezoning and your neighbors are going to need your help to fight.

The first man who spoke at the Community Board 11 Meeting lived around the New Utrecht Avenue rezoning. Many people don’t know about that one because the word wasn’t spread. Councilman Brannan never mentioned it in his newsletters. When people asked about it in its early stages, look how Brannan responded: See here.

The Shore Hill Rezoning is still happening. At the meeting last Spring, no one mentioned that 30% of the building was going to be for homeless people. (Spring Meeting notes) Community Board 11 should have shared that to the community, so people weren’t shocked by the Fall meeting when Jonathan Rose’s developers mentioned it. (See here) The home owners next to this building are fighting hard.

Mathylde Frontus Not Thanked Publicly, Even Though Frontus Funded the Earth Day Event

Bay Ridge Cares has run events in a park beforeso it’s strange that they thanked Justin Brannan for doing the permits. Mathylde Frontus funded the event and was not thanked publically. Why?

It’s strange the organizations hung signs (see the middle one), but there was no mention of the former Assembly representative’s money funding the project.

From Here

A Bay Ridge resident shared photos and remarked on Facebook that the park was cleaned very well. That resident didn’t know that there was a “clean up” planned for the park.

Even stranger, Bay Ridge Cares and the Bay Ridge Environmental Group published photos of Brannan with them in the park. I spoke online to both groups about Justin Brannan failing to request a hearing for the East River Park activists. (Info here and here)

This is how the park activists were treated by Brannan’s staffers. They went to his office because Brannan would not return their calls. Brannan was head of the Committee that should have helped them. Brannan received extra money to be the head of that committee.

Monday Morning April 24th – No One is Helping the Homeless on the R Train – 95th Street

Every day, Bay Ridge residents see homeless people in desperate need of help.

Bay Ridge residents take pictures and share them with the politicians, but nothing changes.

Last Fall, during election season, Senator Andrew Gounardes went in the subway and took photos with Justin Brannan. But the situation has not changed eight months later.

Sometimes there are people from NYC on the train to help the homeless, but they aren’t talking to the homeless when the train is in Bay Ridge. They are talking with each other in one car.

Elect people who care that homeless people aren’t getting help and want to do something about it.
