June 25, 2023How Did Free Concerts in a Park Become Part of an Election Flyer with Maimonides Hospital?

NIA (the Neighborhood Improvement Association) is running concerts in the park. These concerts used to be run by the former senator, Marty Golden. (See here or here)
Why is Maimonides Hospital and Investor’s Bank on the flyer?
Here’s why that is a problem:
Maimonides Hospital lobbied Justin Brannan and Shahana Hanif.
Maimonides received over a million dollars from the NYC budget:

While Councilman Brannan shared the money he gave to community groups that year, Brannan failed to mention the million dollars to Maimonides.
Why did Maimonides lobbying Brannan in 2022?
In 2021, Maimonides purchased the naming rights to MCU Park in Coney Island.(Source) That’s the huge stadium where the Cyclones play.
A lawsuit against Maimonides says the hospital lost $145 million in 2021. (See here)
In 2021, Maimonides started work on the Emergency Department in Bay Ridge, where SUNY Downstate used to be on 7th Avenue and 92nd Street. (See here)
Yesterday, Justin Brannan sent out a card advertising his campaign.
Are these concerts now campaign events? NIA was paid with our tax money – so this should not be on a Re-elect Brannan card.

Why is Maimonides, who successfully lobbied Brannan, on these cards?

June 25, 2023Shooter’s Photo – Bay Ridge Incident Outside Plugged In on Friday, June 23, 2023

The Daily News shared the photo above. The man and woman who were shot on Friday on 5th Avenue and 95th Street in Bay Ridge are lucky to be alive! Look at how close the shooter was to the dark grey car!

The NY Post shared the picture of the shooter running through our neighborhood. (Post article here) The video can be seen (here)
Not one politician shared these photos, even though the shooter is at large! The 68th Precinct tweeted about a message about not getting your car taken, but did not share the photos of the shooter! (See here) C’mon Captain Schafer!

The Post article shared that the shooter was wearing a blue track suit and red and white sneakers. Sneaker enthusiasts identified the sneakers as Jordan Cherry Reds.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).

June 25, 2023MESA Charter High School Wants to Know If Parents Are Interested in It Opening Here

MESA charter high school is looking to open another location in the Fall of 2025. They want to know if there is an interest in South Brooklyn. If you are interested, take this survey.
Info on the school’s current location is Bushwick:
MESA Charter High School opened its doors on August 19, 2013, and for the past ten years has been, as the New York Post put it, “just might be the best charter high school in the state.” MESA’s admissions is by lottery, and 84% of its students live in the surrounding neighborhood. In a community where the graduation rate has hovered around 70%, MESA has graduated 94% of its students on time. Graduates matriculate to top SUNY and CUNY schools as well as elite private colleges such as Brown, Cornell, Syracuse, NYU, Boston College, and Boston University.
Some key features of MESA’s model are:
– Small school (500 students total, 125 per grade) and advisory model that create a “family-like” atmosphere.
– Successful track record of staff retention–MESA has averaged 77% year-to-year staff retention over its lifetime and 83% over the past five years.
– Ten AP courses including AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Language, AP Literature, AP US History, and AP Government
– Partnership with St. Francis College allowing students to take college-level classes for credit on campus during the school day.
– 3 dedicated college/career counselors for a senior class of 125, a ratio similar to that found at elite private schools.

June 24, 2023Do You Recognize These Doors, Bay Ridge?

They are the doors to the former Prince Hotel on 93rd Street (off 3rd Avenue) in Bay Ridge.
If you don’t recognize the doors, it’s because they were covered by an ugly awning. (See here) The new owners of the Prince Hotel removed the awning right away.

There are a lot of papers on the doors, but there is a stop work order on the building.

June 24, 2023Brannan, Gounardes and Brook-Krasny Failed to Have 93rd Street Cleaned of Graffiti

Some residents drew rainbow chalk drawings outside of Alec Brook-Krasny’s office on 93rd Street after his rant at the Community 10 Board Meeting on June 15th. (Info)

On June 20th, someone took spray paint and put graffiti over the message “Love is Love,” as well as the rainbows.

Community leaders should have had the graffiti cleaned off the street with paint thinner or painted over. Four days later, the black paint is still there.

On Wednesday morning, Justin Brannan tweeted against Brook-Krasny. Brannan likes to go back and forth against the Republicans on social media.

Later on that day, Justin Brannan called Charlie Ragusa, instead of taking care of the graffiti on 93rd Street. Ragusa reported Brannan’s rant to NYC Council. (See here)

The following day (Thursday), Andrew Gounardes tweeted about the graffiti, but did nothing about it. Senator Gounardes said he stood with the LGBTQ community, but he didn’t have the hate removed from the street.

Chris McCreight, a Democratic District Leader, also played politi8cs on Twitter. He shared some word soup about standing with the LGBTQ community, but he didn’t clear the graffiti. There are enough people in the world tweeting, Bay Ridge needs new leaders, who don’t mind working locally.

On Friday, Senator Andrew Gounardes was taking pictures with Transportation Alternatives (they lobby NYC & NYS politicians), instead of taking care of the hate put on 93rd Street. (See here)

The residents on 93rd Street need politicians who are willing to take action, not play on Twitter.
In November 2021, we saw Gounardes and Brannan ignore (this graffiti) in Dyker Heights. Children attending PS 201 and St. Bernadette’s have been walking on that for two years. They just don’t care!
Those in the LGBTQ+ family should have seen the politicians move to remove the hate – not share it on and beat up the Republicans with it. Hate wins when people fail to take action.
It’s Brook-Krasny’s office so he could have had it cleaned as well. The politician’s office is only open two days of the week, but Alec should have made a trip over to clean or have one of his staffer’s clean it.

Jada Camille, journalist for The Brooklyn Paper, doesn’t live in Bay Ridge, but she wants to write partial stories about our community. A journalist’s job isn’t to take pictures from Twitter and comment on them. Jada Camille should have come to the area, taken photos and spoke to the residents on the block. Jada Camille failed to share that Brannan and Gounardes did not have the graffiti cleaned up. Hate lives on because no one took action!

Giovanni’s Brooklyn Eats Restaurant at 1657 8th Avenue in South Slope had a fire in their kitchen this morning around 11:00 am this morning. (Video here)

Thankfully, there was no customers in the restaurant and the staff was able to get out. The restaurant has a lot of damage, so it will be awhile before they reopen.

Giovanni Tafuri, the owner, set up a GoFundMe to help defray costs. (Here).

June 24, 2023New Traffic Light Being Installed Near Xaverian

A light is being installed outside of Xaverian on Shore Road and 71st Street. Sheldon shared the photo above and wrote that fifteen years ago it wasn’t a good idea to put a light on this corner because two bus routes, the B64 & B9 come down that block. Also, many parents double park to let their kids out in the morning and when picking them up each afternoon.
When the light is installed at that corner, many people on 71st Street across from Xavarian are going to hear a lot of honking.
A light is needed on that corner. I remember a tween was hit there in the Winter. Xaverian is now a 6th – 12th grade school and drivers are speeding on Shore Road.

Sheldon believes that Shore Road & 72nd Street should have received a light because of the “wicked turn.” There have also been many accidents at that corner.
Residents have complained about how apprehensive they feel when driving down Shore Road and 72nd for years. The politicians put a speed camera instead of a light there.
