Macareno Central Grocery Has Warm Tortillas

Vinnie shared that Macareno Central Grocery at 6810 4th Avenue has a little cooler in the back filled with warm, fresh, corn tortillas (the white cooler is seen below).

“Tortillas Calliente” = Hot Tortillas.

I’ve never gone to that store, but I love when neighbors share tips like this.

A Deer in Bay Ridge Was Captured & Treated

Joven shared the photo above of a deer on Dense Wharf on social media. The deer must have swam over from Staten Island.

Dense Wharf is marked in red on the map below. Thomas Greene recently had a cleanup on Dense Wharf with some students. (See pictures and article)

Yesterday, another person posted a photo of the deer. But the deer wasn’t walking around like he was in Joven’s photos. The deer looked weak and was laying down at Dense Wharf. The Ridgite asked people to call for help for the deer because he had not been rescued. Things weren’t looking good for the deer.

Today the deer was rescued and his leg was treated. Thank goodness! In October 2020, a dead deer was found by a teen near the bridge.

Con Edison Robocalled Warning to Dyker Heights

Today, many Dyker Heights residents received a robocall from Con Edison telling them that their power may be interrupted in the next few days.

Con Edison told residents that the power interruption may happen because the temperature is expected to go up over the next few days. Con Edison wanted residents to prepare. How are they supposed to prepare? Many people are having friends and family over for 4th of July barbecues.

Con Edison also sent messages:

Every Summer, Dyker Heights has black outs, which isn’t acceptable in 2023. Yet politicians like Andrew Gounardes are busy putting taxes on people, rather than holding Con Edison accountable.

We have many NYC Council members that want to get rid of gas stoves and gas powered cars, but they don’t take into account that this will put even more stress on the electrical grid. (Info here) If the grid can’t handle Dyker Heights now, what is going to happen when everyone is forced to use electric stoves and vehicles?

Con Edison makes a lot of money in NYC and should update the grid, so it can power everyone’s home without bothering people with robocalls or having power outages.

Full Moon Wiccan Ritual In Bay Ridge 7/3/23

Christopher’s photo

On social media there was an invitation for the witches of Bay Ridge to attend the Temple of Hecate today, Monday, July 3rd at 8:00 pm for a full moon Wiccan ritual at 309 82nd Street in Bay Ridge.

The ritual that they are having this evening focuses on healing, and/or manifestation spell work, and includes guided meditations.

If you are unable to attend in person, you can attend on Zoom. Join their Facebook page to get the link: here.

If you can’t attend todays event, there is a full moon ritual every month at the same location and it is open to anyone who wants to participate (it’s always on a Monday). You don’t have to be “Wiccan” specifically to attend.

I didn’t even know there was a temple at 309 82nd Street in Bay Ridge. (Street view) I’ve been writing about this community for years and no one mentioned it. It’s down the block from St. Anselm Church.

The Bay Ridge Community’s response on Facebook was interesting and polite. Many people were intrigued and asked questions.

Two Christians spoke out in strong disagreement with witchcraft and cited this Bible verse: Deuteronomy 18:10-12. (See verse) The Wiccans explained that they do not honor Satan (that’s good). They also don’t believe in hell. The Christians said they would pray for them.

The Bay Ridge Dog Park on Shore Road Costs 1 Million Dollars & Will Open in July 2023

A new dog park on Shore Road near the entrance to the Belt Parkway is set to open this month – July 2023. (See plans)

The dog park is near the public red brick bathroom on Shore Road or the Marine Avenue bus stop. You can take the stairs near the bathroom down to the dog park. (See picture below)

I love dogs, but NYC should not have used one million dollars for this dog park on Shore Road.

The dog park is due to open this month July 2023:

Since this is NYC it probably won’t open until after the Summer and dogs can’t enjoy the cool tree covered area.

New Low: Children’s Basketball In Coney Island Was Infiltrated By Casino Lobbyists

Yesterday, children in Coney Island showed up to a free Hoopster event to play basketball.

It’s Summer and families love when there is organized sports for children. The basketball event held at Kaiser Park was free, but the children had to wear the t-shirts to participate.

When families arrived and saw the t-shirts had “The Coney” imprinted across the front of the t-shirts, some parents objected because they oppose Thor Equities Casino Project in Coney Island. They didn’t allow their children to wear the tshirt because they didn’t want it to seem like their children supported the casino.

Some parents didn’t know that “The Coney” was a casino. The Developers were being cute and left off the word “casino.” And it is the beginning of Summer and some parents were very tired because school just ended and they have their children at home all day.

Yet, if a child did not wear the lobbyist’s t-shirt, they were not allowed to play basketball! That’s just low.

Robert Cornegy, former NYC Council representative is a lobbyist on this project. Cornegy owes Coney Island families and apology. Cornegy is seen in a video wearing a shirt at the event!

Do you think Robert Cornegy’s children were forced to wear t-shirts with a casino’s name on it? Of course not! But it’s okay for your children because it’s happening in Coney Island and no one will know!

Pictures of the children wearing the shirts were taken, so the lobbyist can make it seem that people in Coney Island support the casino, but that’s far from the truth.

In the pictures I saw, all the children and coaches were wearing the shirts. As a side note, the coaches just want the children to be able to play and have fun. They don’t realize that lobbyists and politicians have infiltrated community sports all for a Instagram-worthy photograph!

No politician or lobbyist should be using children as pawns for a one-day basketball event. Corporate sponsorship for leagues should remain on signs or banners on the walls – not placed on children!

I sent this to Speaker Adrienne Adams on Twitter because I believe she would be surprised that the lobbyists were bothering families in Coney Island.

The Huge Building Added to 63rd Street That No One Talked About

Jessie’s Photo

This huge building was put up at 1055 – 63rd Street between Ft. Hamilton Parkway and 11th Avenue in Borough Park.

It’s strange that no one mentioned it since it is on a residential block. It’s nine stories on 63rd Street.

Property block and lot maps – see here

The map showing the block and lot, revealed a strange property shape. The property is on both 63rd Street and 62nd Street (it’s Block: 5730 and Lot 32 and Lot 34 (for the 62nd Street property).

At 1062 – 62nd Street are the apartments below. (Zillow) You can see the street map here.

Property Shark shows this (here):

Compass Realty shows this: (here)

Zoning Districts: R5B (this looks higher than R5B – see here)

Total Units: 3

Land Use Category: E1

Commercial Area(SF): 14,060 Sq. Ft.

Things seem to come undone at the edges of Brooklyn communities.

Why didn’t Community Board 10 mention this project? The previous property was commercial, but it wasn’t nine stories.

Google maps photo 2020

But even if it is “as of right” it should have been mentioned due to the size of the structure and it’s placement on a residential street.

Someone wrote that this property isn’t in Community Board 10’s district. Yes, 62nd and 63rd Street are still in CB 10.(See map here)

A part of the communication within our community is missing.

There are a lot of complaints:

Lan Thai at 8510-4th Avenue (Formerly Top Thai)

Lan Thai is at  8510 4th Avenue in Bay Ridge where Top Thai used to be. I don’t know when they changed names, but it must have been within in the last month.

Good luck to the new owners! They have a lunch menu and a regular menu.
