Homeless People on the R Train Are Invisible to Politicians and People Who Don’t Care – 10/17/23

This morning, the R Train rode into Bay Ridge with a lot exhausted homeless people and returned to NYC with them.

Councilman Brannan and Senator Gounardes told us last election season that the people riding on the train were being assisted. After the election, no one mentioned these people because they are invisible to politicians.

Week after week, year after year, those down on their luck are ignored on the R train in Bay Ridge. But many are mentally ill and their families have no idea they are on the train.

During election season, the orange shirts flood the subway station. But you notice not one man wearing an orange shirt is talking or assisting someone who needs help.

They did the same thing during Gounardes’ election season…..don’t let them fool you this time Bay Ridge.

October 16, 2023Six Million Dollars Was Given out Today…But Not a Dime to Help the Homeless in Bay Ridge

On October 28, 2020, the property known as St. John Church at 9818 Ft Hamilton Parkway, was sold for $2,500,000.
The Bay Ridge Community Development Center (BRCDC) purchased the building and renovated the inside – it looks nice.
Today, Councilman Justin Brannan handed this organization a check for six million dollars. (News here)

Why would our community put more than two times the amount of money into a private organization? This property is not owned by NYC.
How did an organization that has only been set up for a short time get six million dollars when there are so many needs in Bay Ridge?
Tonight, Councilman Brannan’s staffer, Gabrielle, announced it at the Community Board 10 Meeting. Why didn’t people clap over the news? Not even Josephine or the Chair of CB 10 clapped. (See Youtube – 13:27)
In 2021, we saw Brannan quietly give Maimonides Hospital money after he was lobbied. (Info here) Maimonides invested in MCU Park in Coney Island, so our community money should not have been given to them. (Info)
Brannan gave NIA over a million dollars for an office renovation. (Info here) That property is not owned by NYC either.
Why didn’t Justin Brannan bring the check to Dyker Heights to immediately fix the street to stop the flooding into people’s homes? It was awful to hear tonight that these residents STILL have not received help with the city water and sludge backing up into their basements – OVER A YEAR LATER. (See here)
Why didn’t Councilman Brannan use some of the money to help the homeless that have been riding on the R train in Bay Ridge for years?
Why didn’t Bay Ridge purchase some buildings for senior housing – this is six million dollars!!
Why wasn’t the money used on 86th Street to rent a spot for preteens and teens to play basketball and other games? That’s the kind of center the community needs. BRCDC hosts political events like this so it wouldn’t be a center for the community.
The senior center across the street from BRCDC is city owned. Why wasn’t six million put into that building?

People in our area have been overcharged in property taxes for years. To see six million dollars appear for an organization before a city council election is not alright. More people should be speaking out against this!

October 16, 2023Tonight’s CB 10 Meeting – 10th Avenue Residents Still Digging Out Sludge From Basements

Pictured above is Brad who appeared at the Community Board 10 Meeting tonight to speak about the 10th Avenue sewers. The sewers are backing up into his basement. This has been going on for a long time and it’s not just water – it’s sludge!
It’s terrible that Brad had to return to Community Board 10 to ask for help AGAIN.
This job should have been taken care of a long time ago! Brad and his wife are digging sludge out of his basement all of the time!! His neighbors also have the same problem.
WHY HAS JUSTIN BRANNAN OR ANDREW GOUNARDES NOT TAKEN CARE OF THIS YET? Please vote them out!
This couple should not be spending their time cleaning out waste from backed up sewer pipes because city and state representatives have not requested emergency service here!
It’s not fair and not sanitary. It’s awful that our community who hasn’t taken action for these families!

October 16, 2023Two Cannabis Shops Are Applying To Open Legally in Our Community. We Have 30.

Josephine from Community Board 10 said there are about 30 illegal shops in our area.
Two weed shops have requested to sell legally in our area.
They want to open a legal weed shop on the corner of 13th and 71st Street. Next door is Ring Around the Rosey Preschool! The address of the other location was not shared at the CB 10 Meeting (address to be determined).
Legislation Senator Andrew Gounardes voted in favor of has allowed these shops in our community. I don’t think Gounardes knows he voted for this legislation because he was talking about keeping cigarettes away from children. See:

We were told by Kathy Hochul in July that illegal shops would be fined. We haven’t seen any action taken against these illegal shops.
Brannan and Gounardes have not stood up for the community or taken action against these illegal stores. For several months Councilman Brannan said that the two were going to “get creative,” but that has not happened.

October 16, 2023Pickelball Lovers Ask for More Courts at CB 10

Concetta came to talk about the four Pickleball Courts at JJ Carty Park. She said it is very crowded in the afternoon and on the weekends – people are waiting for 45 minutes to an hour to play. There are taped lines on the courts – not painted lines. **This is a new court – why weren’t the lines painted? Taped lines should not be in a new park.
Herbie got up to speak about parking spots near JJ Carty Park’s courts. He said the Construction Center is empty. He wanted to know if CB 10 will give the pickleball players some spots.
Joseph Walsh asked about the 8th Avenue and 60th Street pickleball courts. There are four pickleball courts. There are a lot of tennis courts not being used. They would like 10 pickleball courts.
