What Politicians and the Press Failed to Tell NYC About the Lunar New Year Bill

(Photo)

Politicians have been taking photos and tweeting about the Lunar New Year bill, as if they revolutionized New York.

Do these politicians think NYC parents don’t know that everyone has had off from school for Lunar New Year since 2015?

Pix 11 shared this:

In 2023, Lunar New Year fell on a Sunday. Students did not receive Monday off because Lunar New Year was not a state holiday.

(Photo)

What the news forgot to tell you: Assemblyman Lester Chang saw that students did not get off this year because Lunar New Year was on a Sunday, so he wrote a bill to make Lunar New Year a state holiday and submitted it in February 2023: (See bill)

At the end of May 2023, Assemblyman Chang’s bill passed the Government Operations Committee with a vote 10 to 4:

Then the NYS Assembly HELD Assemblyman Chang’s bill “for consideration. THEY HELD HIS BILL!

Neither Senator Andrew Gounardes or Senator Iwen Chu stepped up and called for Assemblyman Chang’s bill to be heard!!

Neither Senator Gounardes or Senator Chu informed the Brooklyn Community that the NYS government was stifling a bill for the Asian Community! There were no tweets or articles in the paper from these two representatives !

Then a new bill for Lunar New Year was introduced in the NYS government. Both the Assembly and Senate bill have a date of JUNE 7, 2023.

Brian Kavanaugh introduced the bill….Iwen Chu did not introduce it – she was just one of many co-sponsors. See bill) Kavanaugh and the others are Democrats.

This was an easy vote – everyone in the Senate voted for it (one senator was excused).

Senator Andrew Gounardes didn’t tell about Assemblyman Chang’s bill because Gounardes did not reach across the table to get this done in February! Gounardes could have co-sponsored Lester’s bill, but he failed to step up for the Asian Community in Brooklyn!

By the way, a lot of politicians took photos with Governor Hochul and no one called Assemblyman Chang to be in the photo!

The Asian Community is full of people who work very hard. I think many of them will laugh about this ridiculous low level of politics on We Chat. And I hope the share that Assemblyman Chang was working hard for them!

Canal Street Always Had Fakes Bags, But Sellers Weren’t This Bold. NYPD Confiscated All of It.

Canal Street has always sold fake bags. Years ago the setup table was a small folding table that would hold six or seven bags. In a nearby building. they kept the rest of their stash. People would ask the sellers for a certain bag and they would run around the block and go get it.

Now they just have hundreds of counterfeit bags. Today, the NYPD confiscated all of it!

Lot Where Spartan Spartan Souvlaki Greek Restaurant Used to Be on 8th Avenue

Spartan Souvlaki Greek Restaurant was at 6820 8th Avenue, until it closed in 2019.

In 2021, the building sold for only $1,400,000. (From Acris) It’s such a large piece of property, I would have thought it would have sold for a lot more!

The building was:

The cost listed:

Bay Ridge Isn’t Being Maintained

There is graffiti all over Bay Ridge – the City Council representative does not care.

Most of the parks are unkept. This isn’t so bad:

Then you see grass that hasn’t been taken care of in over a month. How high does it have to get before they cut it?

People told me cars on 65th Street were a problem. But they weren’t kidding.

Businesses putting up their signs where they don’t belong all over the neighborhood and no one stopping them:

This building belongs to our community, but has been used a free billboard for the company who is selling garbage bags, chemicals and building supplies. They actually secured the sign to the building!

The huge “For Lease” signs all over the neighborhood are the saddest. Who wants to open a business near a marijuana shop in Bay Ridge?

Bay Ridge needs new leadership because the current politicians do not care.

Megan Alano Remembered – Beautiful Bench

As we rode by, I saw the painted bench on Shore Road. I didn’t know the bench was painted by Megan Alano’s tribe. What a beautiful tribute for a birthday!

The rainbow bench brings a happy colorful spot that represents the joy and love that Megan had for everyone they met.

Faridun Mavlonov, 15 – Died 8 Weeks Ago

On Monday, July 17th, Faidun Mavlonov, a 15-year-old boy was fatally shot on 20th Avenue, about a mile from his home in Bensonhurst.

It’s eight weeks later and his killer has not been arrested.

The police and politicians haven’t mentioned Faridun.

There were no Moms Demanding Action – not even once in the eight weeks.

We’re calling for justice for Faridun Mavlonov, a teen who didn’t get to live his life. What is the delay in the arrest? (Info)
