November 19, 2023Layo Centeno – The Sunset Park Legend

On the corner of 51st Street and 3rd Avenue in Sunset Park is a mural of Layo Centeno.
Layo had a restaurant named Layo Restaurant on 3rd Avenue and 52nd Street. Later he moved to 51st Street.
Layo was legend in Sunset Park because he cared for everyone. He died in 2009, but many people still talk about him and his great food. People were obsessed with his pernil sandwiches – very low cost and big.
I remember around the holidays so many people would go to Layo Restaurant to get pastels.
Layo’s son moved back to Puerto Rico.

November 19, 2023Fireworks Heard in Bay Ridge From Liberty Island

Why are there so many fireworks tonight in Bay Ridge? It’s around 10:40 pm and everyone is hearing the booming of fireworks, but it sounds different than it usually does.
People all over Brooklyn heard the fireworks. (See here)
Those living on Shore Road or standing near the 69th Street Pier or Shore Road bike path saw a huge fireworks show!
** Politicians should have let the community know this was going to happen – they have the schedule! ** It’s like we don’t have any leaders here.
After the fireworks went off for 10+ minutes, a Bay Ridge resident shared the 311 announcement that the fireworks were for a private event at Liberty Island. (Seen here)

November 19, 2023Andrew Gounardes Doesn’t Want to Tell The Community About a Deceased Resident, But He Wants to Celebrate World Day of Remembrance

This morning Senator Andrew Gounardes tweeted about World Day of Remembrance.
Yet in July, when a woman was hit and killed by a livery driver on 4th Avenue and Senator Street, Andrew Gounardes never mentioned her name. (See info here)
Both Gounardes and Brannan say they are in contact with the NYPD. So why didn’t they share the information with the community?
The nameless 61-year-old woman remained nameless when the Bay Ridge environmental group invited Transalt and Families for Safer Streets for a walk through Bay Ridge. When they got to Senator Street, they said a woman was killed her. She’s not just a woman – she’s someone’s family member who had a life before the livery driver hit her.
Both Transalt and Families for Safer streets have no idea that Gounrdes does not speak out in the community. When he shared the World Remembrance Day it is because Families for Safer Streets celebrates that day.
Celebrating World Day of Remembrance is pointless when Senator Gounardes didn’t take the time to acknowledge the loss of this resident in Bay Ridge.
