December 30, 2023Free New Year’s Eve Events in Brooklyn

There are a lot of great parties in Bay Ridge for New Year’s Eve. (See here) I received this question:

Bay Ridge doesn’t have any free or low cost celebrations for families. Next year, a block on 3rd Avenue should do this.
1) There is a free fireworks show at the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn between 8:00 – 9:00 pm.

A company named Hatch, which makes smart alarm clocks, is having fireworks and a drone show on the Brooklyn Waterfront so people don’t have to wait to midnight to celebrate and can get a good night’s sleep! (Info here)

I haven’t seen many places mention these fireworks, but it is listed on the NYC website for fireworks on New Year’s Eve. Info here
People shared videos:

2) Go to the 68th Pier or Shore Bike Path! You won’t see the fireworks from Manhattan, but you can see the fireworks from Staten Island and hang out with other Brooklynites.
3) Grand Army Plaza on Flatbush Avenue will have a free New Year’s Eve Event with fireworks and live music from 10:00 – 12:30 pm. (Info here)
4) Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and see the fireworks. The bridge is very busy on New Years Eve. (Info)
5) Stay home and have a party with your people! My parents used to invite their friends and neighbors every year to our home.

December 30, 2023The Children’s March for Gaza in Bay Ridge Today

There were a lot of police officers on 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge for the Children’s March this afternoon. Children and their families chanted as they walked through the streets.
The march stopped at Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis’ office. Click on the picture below to see the video – they left children’s shoes and toys outside of her office.
I’m not sure why the march only stopped at Malliotakis’ office – why didn’t they stop at other leader’s offices in Bay Ridge?
We haven’t heard any politician from Bay Ridge call to have the people in the Gaza escorted out of the area, even when this many people have been killed:

Whatever way you feel about what’s going on, someone has to have the common sense to say ENOUGH.
One reporter on Twitter noted that there were a lot of SRG officers and drones being used to monitor the march. (See here) He seemed to think it wasn’t necessary because it was a peaceful march. Maybe he isn’t aware of the outburst that happened at the end of a protest a few months ago in Bay Ridge.
At the end of today’s march, the people prayed before they left.

December 30, 2023Who Does Justin Brannan Represent When He Was Pushing 421a on Twitter?

We all lived in Brooklyn for years with the rent being too high, while 421a existed and developers and politicians had a good time!

We have all seen Councilman Brannan put ZERO dollars towards housing year after year! Now Brannan wants to be a housing expert for NYC?!
In 2021, one NYC councilmember who was in office for three months told us that he put 4.5 million towards housing. (See comments here) Oswald Feliz should be talking about housing – not Brannan!
Everyone in Bay Ridge is aware that the homeless are left – on the street, in the park or on the trains. The politicians here don’t care! Why haven’t the apartments that have been set aside for the homeless been given to them? (Source)
In November 2023, ABC found that 4,800 apartments were not rented because the building owners weren’t able to do repairs. (Source and ABC News)
The Daily News also wrote about fifteen thousand apartments being available in NYC. (Source)
We should see Councilman Brannan speaking up for the area he represents – Bay Ridge and Coney Island, not all of NYC.
For Bay Ridge, Brannan should have told Senator Andrew Gounardes to do his job and change the property taxes at the start of the legislative year. How many people have left Bay Ridge because they haven’t been able to afford living here?
For five years, Gounardes has been too lazy and unwilling to do the work to get a property tax bill passed. Gounardes and Brannan want to hold the office, but they don’t want to do the real work to help anyone.
Tweeting and supporting 421a for developers is easy!

December 30, 2023Chef Thomas Perrone of Brooklyn Roots Shared His Tiramisu Recipe

Chef Thomas Perrone, owner of Brooklyn Roots Restaurant on 3rd Avenue and 87th Street shared his recipe for tiramisu with Amelia Change of XOXO Fashion Magazine. (See here)
This coming year will be a big year for Chef Perrone and his partners! They will be opening a new restaurant at 8602 – 3rd Avenue called ‘The Corner.’

They shared the restaurant’s charming logo and Instagram page (here). The description on the top of their Instagram pages says: ‘An Old School Take on French Cuisine.‘ What a great addition that is going to be to Bay Ridge!

December 29, 2023Andrew Gounardes Thinks His Job is to Comment on Twitter About Changes Newspaper Articles

The Brooklyn Bridge has had problems with overcrowding for a long time. Senator Andrew Gounardes never offered any solution, even though he is the representative for both sides of the Brooklyn Bridge!
Today, the Daily News published this article about the changes coming on January 3rd.
Andrew Gounardes thinks his job is to go on Twitter and say, “I support this change.”
Brooklyn, choose better people who want to work and have solutions – not someone who just wants to sit around and tweet!

December 29, 2023Landmarking in NYC Doesn’t Mean Anything

Photo: Doll C.
During one of NYC’s Landmarking Preservation Commission’s hearings, they said no building could be higher than the original Angel Guardian Home building.
The new building being built on 63rd Street between 12th and 13th Avenue looks like it is the height or taller original building.

Photo: Doll C.
The proposed building had nine stories. (See here)
The Guardians of the Guardian rallied this Summer. Senator Iwen Chu and Councilmember Alexa Aviles told the community they would take care of it. (Info)
Landmarking this building didn’t mean anything – it was pointless.
The new owners are able to remove parts of the original building and have also been allowed to let the building decay. (See here) If landmarking meant something in NYC, the new owners should have been required to maintain the existing building.
