Purse Snatched on 86th Street and 6th Avenue

The 68th Precinct needs to step it up here. No one should have their purse snatched in the early evening in Bay Ridge!
We didn’t see the Captain speak at the community meeting this month!

January 2, 2024Protest Against the Shelter in Bay Ridge – Jan 3rd

There is a protest on Wednesday, January 3rd against the shelter being planned for 4th Avenue in Bay Ridge.
The protest is at 6530 – 4th Avenue at 12:00 pm.
One politician wants us to believe that the owner of this property was able to file the plans for a seven-story SRO homeless shelter without having a discussion with anyone in the community. (See plans)
At the end of November, Josephine from Community Board 10 informed Bay Ridge in one sentence about the shelter at the CB 10 Meeting – not one person on Community Board 10 asked a question about it.

January 2, 2024B16 Bus Slammed Into SUV While Driving in the Wrong Lane – Ft. Hamilton Pkwy.

Photo: Jessie H.
Around 4:00 pm this afternoon, a B16 bus was riding in the wrong lane on Fort Hamilton Parkway hit a red SUV, which was riding in the correct lane.

Photo: Jessie H.
In the video, we can see how far the bus is in the other lane. (See video here) The driver of the red SUV must have been shocked to see the bus driving in their lane.

Photo: Jessie H
There were injuries on the bus and in the SUV. The people on the bus were asked to get off the bus, but some of them were injured, even children.

The bus driver was being cared for, but the passengers were not checked before they exited the bus. It’s fine if the adults aren’t checked, but the children should have been checked before they left the bus. They may have been so shocked by the collision that they didn’t know they were hurt.

January 2, 2024A Lot of Commotion at FDR High School Today

NY 1 News
In December, NY 1 News shared the statistics about about the large increase of weapons at FDR and Murrow High School.
Today, the Police were at FDR High School at 5800 20th Avenue Y this morning and stuck around all day!
Metal detectors were setup to check the students as they entered the building.
The NYPD has to know that they aren’t going to catch most of the street-smart high school students. Why? The wait to get into the high school is a half a block long when there are metal detectors. Any students who didn’t want to be discovered would cut school for the day or hide the weapon in a nearby location.
On December 15th, FDR was locked down, but after the lockdown they announced they didn’t find any weapons.

In July, a 15-year-old teen, Faridun Mavlonov, was shot and killed on 20th Avenue. (Info) As far as we know, the shooter has not been arrested. (Info) Several articles wrote that the shooter was a student at FDR. (See here)
No politicians took action in the Summer, so the problem seems to have grown.

January 2, 2024Sinkhole on 6th Avenue Bet. 67th/68th Streets

This morning Bay Ridge residents saw a huge sinkhole opened on 6th Avenue between 67th and 68th Street. (Info)
Dawn shared the picture above and more here.

Channel 1 News
The sinkhole is 25 feet by 15 feet wide and 20 feet deep. (Spectrum News)
The sinkhole was caused by a break in the sewer line on 6th Avenue and 68th Street this morning.
This happened near a fire hydrant, so no cars fell into the hole.
Channel 1 News shared this view tonight:

Some Bay Ridge residents do not have water or electricity! Temporary water service is being provided to some homes they were lugging large buckets to their homes.

Channel 1 News
*Water service is back on tonight for most customers.

Channel 1 News
The 68th Precinct sent out a message in the morning to update the community about the sinkhole (get on their list if you aren’t on it already).

Around noon, Councilman Brannan gave this update.
Some residents said that they saw it sinking for a few days.

January 2, 20242023: No One Jumped From the Verrazzano

Today, we were on 3rd Avenue and someone was talking loudly to his friends. He asked them to name something good that happened in Brooklyn this past year.
His friend couldn’t name anything, so the guy turned towards us and asked, “Can anyone name something good that happened in Brooklyn in 2023?” I could name several things, but I thought I would start with: No one died from jumping from the Verrazzano Bridge in 2023.
For years, hopeless people were jumping from the Verrazzano Bridge. I started recording it because the deaths were increasing. (See here)
A Staten Island Councilman, Steven Matteo, whose no longer in office, pushed for fencing around the Verrazzano Bridge for several years. Gradually the fencing was installed on the bridge. This fencing has deterred people and drastically decreased the deaths on the bridge. (Info)
On December 31, 2022, was the last time the news reported someone falling off the Verrazzano bridge. Fortunately, that man fell from the top level to the bottom level and was alright. (Source)
So that’s good news for Brooklyn, right?

NYC Parks deportment planted four new trees in the center of a street in Astoria. Many places in Bay Ridge want trees, but they can’t get them.
The local politician didn’t notice and after people reported it to him, he said it was a mistake. Parks Department says it wasn’t a mistake. (Story)
People are doing a job – just not the job that NYC needs.
