RIP Samyia Spain – Killed in Park Slope – Veo Kelly Turned Himself In

Twin sisters, Samyia and Saniya Spain were stabbed outside of Natural Plus Deli on 4th Avenue and St. Marks Place in Park Slope at 2:20 am this morning.

The Daily News reported that a drunk man was hitting on the women inside the deli before they were stabbed. (Source)
“One of them guys complemented two girls, walked in with their friends, and they said, no, we’re not attracted so he called them names. They called him names back.” (CBS News)
I DON’T CARE WHAT THE SISTERS AID BACK TO HIM – NO ONE SHOULD HAVE BEEN STABBED!
Other papers reported that Samyia gave the guy her name instagram.
Samyia was stabbed in the chest and neck and died. Saniya was stabbed in the arm and is alright. After her sister was stabbed, Saniya called their grandfather and said, “‘Granddaddy, Samyia got stabbed and she died.” (Source) How awful!
Update: Veo Kelly turned himself in for the murder of Samyia and for stabbing her sister. (Update here) He’s twenty years old and this mistake is going to affect his whole life. Friends of Samyia were spreading his photo on social media for days! They want #JusticeForSamyia and weren’t going to stop under the man was arrested.
The killer ran away and has not been arrested. They have a picture of him and the store must have video as well. I don’t want to hear about his mental health – he killed a young woman, whose life was just beginning!
Samyia was only 19 years old. She had her whole life ahead of her. Her sister will be haunted by this day for the rest of her life. Please pray for Saniya and her family. RIP Samyia.

March 15, 2024RIP Debbie Stevens…Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

We were sad to hear that Debbie Stevens, a community activist in Bay Ridge died suddenly at home today.

Wake: McLaughlin & Sons Funeral Home on 3rd Avenue and 96th Street. Thursday, March 21st, 2024 2:00pm – 5:00pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
Funeral mass on Friday, March 22nd at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Angels Church at 7320 4th Avenue

Debbie would help anyone she could. Whenever she heard that animals were not being cared for, she called for people to help. She didn‘t hesitate to contact politicians or wanna-be politicians to assist those in need. I remember two Brooklyn residents were homeless and she called on many people to assist them and take care of their cats, which were in carriers in the St. Anselm’s parking lot. Debbie didn’t rest until the animals were taken care of.

Debbie loved all animals. She started the Bay Ridge Animal Lovers Group on Facebook. (Here) Debbie wrote this during the Summer near her birthday:

Debbie Stevens loved Bay Ridge and the people in this community.
She fought for seniors because she wanted them to have healthy food. She also wanted all of them to be able to go on day trips with the Senior Center and enjoy life. In 2019, I wrote about her here.

Debbie wanted people in the community to be safe:

She was a good neighbor who cared about people in Bay Ridge:

While she may have been at odds with politicians at times, she cared about their health too:

A GoFundMe was set up to help with the funeral expenses. (See here)
Prayers for her children.
