NYC Property Taxes Unfair and Discriminatory – Gounardes Failed To Take Action for Five Years

NY 1 – Spectrum News
NYC’s Property Tax is regressive, unfair and discriminatory. Since NY politicians failed to take action, NY’s highest court is hearing this case. (News Story, here and here)
“In February 2020, a state appeals court threw out the case, deferring to lawmakers to amend the tax system as they see fit. TENNY appealed, and the state’s highest court agreed in April 2022 to hear the case.” (Source)

NY 1 – Spectrum News
It was revealed that NY’ers in communities of color are paying 19% higher property taxes!

NY 1 – Spectrum News
Years ago, the Democrats said Marty Golden was the holdup on the taxes. When Andrew Gounardes won the seat, Mayor De Blasio was a Democrat so he and Gounardes could have fixed the system, but they both failed to take action.

NY 1 – Spectrum News
For five years, Gounardes wrote two bills that went nowhere – he didn’t even protest once!

NY 1 – Spectrum News
Martha Stark, a former NYC finance commission is now the policy director for the group, Tax Equity Now NY. That group is leading this lawsuit. Stark said that lawsuit will correct the inaction. She was on NY 1 tonight:

NY 1 – Spectrum News
This lawsuit may force changes to NYC’s property tax system.

NY 1 – Spectrum News
When Spectrum News asked Andrew Gounardes about the property tax system, Gounrades responded, “I think it doesn’t work. It is fundamentally broken.” “I expect that as this case goes back to trial for the merits, it will eventually come back to our doorstep.”
We have the wrong person in office! Instead of attacking the problem head on, Gounardes is “waiting for it come back to his doorstep.”
Instead of taking action, Senator Andrew Gounardes posted word soup on X (formerly Twitter):

Gounardes’ website has a press release, even though he is not involved with the lawsuit. (See here) Why is his picture on it?
Instead of lightening the tax burden, Andrew Gounardes is one of the state politicians pushing congestion pricing and the red light camera tickets on NYC. While residents are already being overcharged, Gounardes just doesn’t get it!
Thank you to everyone in Bay Ridge who was blowing up my phone tonight with links to information about this!

March 18, 2024Long Bright River is Filming in Brooklyn 3/19

Long Bright River is filming tomorrow in Brooklyn again. In the beginning of March, they filmed on New Utrecht Avenue near the train station. (See photos) Look for them on 77th Street and 17th Avenue.
The show is based on Liz Moore’s New York Times bestseller, Long Bright River. The story takes place in Philadelphia, so that’s not good that they are filming in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.

Amanda Seyfried is an executive producer, as well as starring in the show, which will stream on Peacock.
Community Board 10 shared that they are parking their trucks on 66th Street between 12th and 13th Avenue.

Nicholas Pinnock will also star in Long Bright River.

March 18, 2024What Justin Brannan Forgot to Tell Bay Ridge About the New School

Councilman Justin Brannan read from a paper at tonight’s Community Board 10’s meeting. He made little eye contact with the audience. (See video)
Brannan said the new school at Nathans will have a Nest Program.
1) Brannan did not speak about the new high school on Ovington Avenue and no one on Community Board 10 asked him any questions.
2) Brannan forgot to say that PS 413 will be named after his friend, Joanne Seminara. School names are usually decided by a community – sometimes the school itself. There was no vote or discussion on this naming. I guess the Councilman gets to name the school without community input (probably because nobody on Community Board 10 wants to question it or say anything). Yes, it’s weird.
Update: On 3/20 Brannan wrote that the school is being named after her because she was a good and decent person.

3) Brannan also didn’t tell Community Board 10 that PS 413 will have a dental clinic in the school and all of the children will get free dental care while they are a student at the school. In addition, the parents can sign up to be trained as dental assistants. See video:

March 18, 2024CB 10 Meeting Tonight….Agenda Shows No Answers About High School or Homeless Shelter

Bring all of your community problems to tonight’s Community Board 10 Meeting at 7:00 pm at 15 Bay Ridge Avenue – the new senior center in Bay Ridge!
Whatever you aren’t receiving help for, come and share it with the community. The pickleball lovers will probably be there asking for pickleball courts again.
Community Board 10 put out an agenda that does not discuss the high school or provide any information about the homeless shelter being planned for 4th Avenue in Bay Ridge.

Community Board 10 does not do a good job providing the community with real information. They like to talk about easy things like where to get free recycling bags.
Has 10th Avenue in Dyker Heights received an upgrade the sewer system so the water stops backing up and flooding our neighbor’s basements? We have terrible political leaders who have let that problem go for too long.
Last Spring, Community Board 10 voted against the high school on Ovington Avenue and Councilman Brannan overode them and proceeded with the high school. One person should not be deciding the location of a school! In September, Community Board 10 did not get any answers for the community on why other locations were not pursued. Isn’t there at least one parent on CB 10 that thinks parents deserve answers?

In November, Josephine said one sentence about the homeless shelter and then failed to provide any updates. Why did Josephine not tell the community more? Why didn’t any members of CB 10 ask questions or seemed surprised about the news of a homeless shelter? The homeless shelter’s plans were filed with NYC last Spring – what was the delay to share the information with the community? (Info here)
The agenda for tonight’s meetings has a lot of simple things that don’t need to be discussed – they are dates that have already been determined and can just be provided in a list or on a graphic.
