86th Street Rezoning – Will Councilman Justin Brannan Stand Up For the Bay Ridge Special District?
In May, Dr. Kim went to Community Board 10 about rezoning 250 – 86th Street. One property can not be rezoned.
Background information: Twelve years ago, Dr. Helen Kim purchased 250 – 86th Street. It’s the small lot outlined in red next to the Salvation Army’s large blue lot here:
The building is a two-family house with a basement. Dr. Kim renovated the house, but could not move her medical practice to the building because of the zoning.
Dr Kim is trying to rezone this building to a R6b, so that the basement and ground floor can be used for her office. She has an office in Staten Island, but she has clients here in Bay Ridge.
If rezoned, a developer could come in and purchase the Salvation Army property, 250 – 86th Street and any of the others that were rezoned on the block and put up a five-story buildings.
There are so many commercial properties for rent. Why can’t Dr. Kim sell that property and get one in an area that is zoned for an office?
In May, Community Board 10 voted against the rezoning because of the Special Bay Ridge District.
The attorney representing the property took it to the next step.

Antonio Reynoso, the Brooklyn Borough President waved them through. Next year, Antonio is up for re-election – remind me to vote for Antonio’s opponent next year because Antonio does not understand the special district.
I’m surprised this made it through the City Planning Commission.
I thought Justin Brannan would tell his buddy Antonio Reynoso to stop the rezoning because of the Bay Ridge Special District.
NYC Council Subcommittee on Zoning laid this over in committee on August 27th. Why hasn’t Councilman Brannan stood up for Bay Ridge?

I’ve never seen Justin Brannan stand up against a developer and win for this community.
a) Last year, Jonathan Rose won at Shore Hill in reducing the number of parking spots. Brannan stood in the back and did not speak out against the developer. (See here) (Non-ULURP)
b) In May 2023, 7120 New Utrecht Avenue was rezoned for a nine-story building. I watched the residents ask Brannan about this property on Facebook, as soon as they saw changes in the building. Brannan told them it was too early for him to get involved. (Info and Info) (See ULURP)
c) In April 2023, a property owner was going to build a nine-story building. Brannan said he talked him down (I think to 4 stories). After a public meeting, the man withdrew the application. (Info) (ULURP)
d) According to (this article) Justin Brannan submitted the paperwork for huge tax breaks for a landlord with 3000 housing Code Violations (don’t read the article when you are in a good mood – you will get mad).

Pesticides Sprayed in Bay Ridge 8/29 1:55 AM
It’s 1:55 am and Pesticides Are Being Sprayed in Bay Ridge.
The truck just came and sprayed our block. They played a quick announcement to go inside and then they drove down the block in a truck and sprayed the block in less than two minutes.
Earlier in the evening they were spraying in Dyker Heights, but then it rained so that could have delayed the spraying.

In the map above, all of the areas in red voted unfavorably for the City of Yes. All of the non-red areas support the city of Yes to different degrees. (See article)
Community Board 10 submitted a 26-page response to the City of Yes in the beginning of July. Besides reading that huge document, they wrote a fantastic reply. (See document -WARNING: this PDF downloads to your computer)

Senator Chu’s Meeting About the 86th Street Shelter Now in August
Update: Senator Chu said they met with NYC (not with Eric Adams) and she requested a community meeting about the shelter. The NYC office said they would get back to her, but they did not say how long it would take to get back to her. (See video in English and Chinese) TOO LITTLE TOO LATE.
Senator Chu’s Meeting did not move anything forward. The Department of Homeless Services was quoted on Channel 1 News:

That is not a community meeting. This is 13-15 people talking in Senator Chu’s office. A community meeting last year would have been helpful when the shelter was announced.
Senator Chu didn’t want to share information about the homeless shelter last year. She didn’t stand up for the people – they have been working hard to protest at the shelter for months!
If a family shelter was planned here, things would be A LOT different! If Iwen took action in the beginning, then this could have happened.
We have the same type of politicians in Bay Ridge. Like Iwen Chu, Andrew Gounardes and Justin Brannan avoided the hard conversations about a homeless shelter. This has made people more afraid and angry because politicians aren’t representing the community.
It’s odd that Senator Chu recorded a private meeting at her office and put online!
Today, Wednesday, August 28th, Senator Chu was scheduled to meet with the New York City Department of Homeless Services. Senator Chu was going to share the community’s opposition of a homeless shelter with that department. Why didn’t Senator Chu do this in 2023 when the homeless shelter was announced? If Chu had responded early enough, they may have made changes because plans weren’t made then.
The other day, Senator Chu released a petition about the shelter. It wasn’t a petition against the shelter – it was a petition against the transparency only.
It’s election season so Senator Chu is trying to take photos and videos for her campaign. Will the community be fooled?
Iwen Chu is facing a lot of criticism because she hasn’t stood up for the community she represents. So now she is going to take pictures and videos to fool you and make it look like this a concern.
Meanwhile, Chu’s opponent, Steven Chan isn’t afraid to have the hard conversations. He’s been working with the community for a long time. See (Steven Chan’s website). This website also wrote about Senator Chu not taking action until now. (See here)

NYPD Catching Bus Fare Evaders in Bay Ridge
For years, almost half the people riding NYC buses have not been paying their fare! (See story) This week NYC papers and other outlets are covering the story, usually fare invasion isn’t covered widely.
This week, they are policing the fare on Staten Island buses that come to Bay Ridge.
“Bus riders that don’t pay the fare will be escorted off of the bus at stops staffed by NYPD officers, who could issue a summons ranging from $50 to $100 and, in some cases, make an arrest.”(Source)
A lot of social media is against people paying a fare for the bus! People think it should be free, so liberals are writing: Tax the rich. It’s so bizarre that they don’t feel they should pay for their transportation.
Pay your fare.

A group had a fundraiser at Norma’s Arts and Crafts Studio at 6908 Colonial Road in Bay Ridge 347-578-7115.
The attendees made cute signs!
