FDNY Lieutenant in Bay Ridge

The FDNY shared this photo and info here.

Lieutenant Jimmy Rimassa has been stationed at Engine 241 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, since May. That’s the firehouse on 3rd Avenue and 66th Street.

Lt. Rimassa said the diverse community is a melting pot. “What’s happening in the world is happening right here in Bay Ridge,” he says.

Although he was recently stationed in the area, he knew some of the members after they helped his family deliver their third child. His wife went into labor while traveling on the Gowanus Expressway. “Engine 241 and Ladder 109 were the first units there. I was assigned to Squad 1 at the time and the members were there during an important time in our lives. That really gave me an affinity for Bay Ridge and the main reason I love working here. They were unbelievable the way they treated my family.”

The Garbage Can All NYC Home Owners Will Be Forced To Purchase By June 2026

Yesterday, Mayor Adams made an announcement that all NYC residents living in a 1-9 family home will need to use a garbage cans with secure lids for their garbage starting November 12th.

You can use any garbage can with a lid for all your garbage bags.

What if you still put your garbage out in a bag on November 13th?

Starting November 12, 2024, failure to use a bin that is 55 gallons or less with a secure lid for trash set out will result in warnings until the end of 2024.

Starting January 2, 2025, the fines will be:

  • $50 for the first offense
  • $100 for the second offense
  • $200 for the third and subsequent offenses

By June 1, 2026, each buildings will be required to use the official NYC Bin (Sold here), so that garbage trucks can pick up your can and empty it into the truck. Property owners are required to supply a can for each apartment.

NYC’s trash bins come in two sizes:

The 35 gallon bin holds three garbage bags & costs $45.88 plus tax.

The 45 gallon bin holds 4 bags and costs $53.01 plus tax

The composting bins that NYC gave out now cost $43.47.

We used garbage cans and a small can, so we purchased this can. It costs more than $50 because there is a processing fee on the garbage cans! There shouldn’t be as that company is already making a lot of money! The head of Sanitation said that it was free shipping – it’s not free shipping if there is a processing fee!

Recycling will still go in plastic bags.

NYC is trying to end the rat problem. With everyone using bins, this will put an end to garbage bags laying all over the street as well.

People have a lot of concerns about this program. Some people recently purchased new cans which look just like the ones NYC are selling, they don’t want to buy new cans and have to dispose of the old cans. How are seniors expected to pay for this?

Since this is a new program, the Department of Sanitation will send out the new rules and also go door-to-door, as well as speak at community meetings.
