August 22, 2024Gounardes and Lander Grandstand on Employee’s Mistake at a Small Business in Brooklyn

Author, Joshua Leifer was supposed to talk about his new book, Tablets Shattered: The End of an American Jewish Century and the Future of Jewish Life on Tuesday, August 20th at POWERHOUSE Arena Bookstore in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

Right before the event, an employee at POWERHOUSE Area Bookstore told Leifer that his event was cancelled.

Most of social media was supportive of the author when he shared the cancellation:

One bookstore invited Leifer to have his book event at their bookstore:

Senator Andrew Gounardes saw his friends tweeting about the topic and condoned the bookstore without finding out what actually happened.

Gounardes didn’t take the time to find out what happened and instead grandstanded on an employee’s error at a bookstore because he wanted to play on social media. Andrew Gounardes is in Greece for his brother’s wedding. (See here) If he didn’t have the ability to contact the bookstore, then Gounardes shouldn’t have tweeted until he did.
NYC Comptroller’s Brad Lander was at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Like Gounardes, Brad Lander decided to be a bandwagon jumper and tweet about the cancellation. Lander could have taken ten minutes to call PowerHouse Arena Bookstore and ask them what happened instead of grandstanding on an employees error.

Brad Lander didn’t even know that he has tagged the wrong business in the tweet be. Powerhouse Arena is @POWERHOUSEArena not @PowerhouseBooks

Thousands of people in Brooklyn and New York City saw Senator Gounardes and Comptroller Lander’s tweets. These elected leaders thought this was okay to do to a small business. Playing on social media and hurting a small business over an employee’s mistake is not right.
On August 22nd, Powerhouse Arena Bookstore explained that one of their employees cancelled the event. They quickly fired the employee. (Read Powerhouse Arena’s explanation here)
Update: On August 23rd, the Jewish Book Council announced an event for Joshua Leifer and Rabbi Andy Bachman on Monday, August 26th. (See event)

August 21, 2024Bay Ridge Residents Took Care of Archie the Cat

The cat above was seen by a Ridgite on 75th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. She brought him a can of cat food and water, but the cat didn’t eat anything.

She called the ASPCA and then shared his location on Facebook because Bay Ridge has a lot of good people who help animals.
Other animal lovers in Bay Ridge went to look for the cat, but he had moved. Several people checked several times and eventually they were able to trap him.

On August 13th, they brought Archie to Verg. The cat was only 2 pounds. The vet gave Archie fluids because he wasn’t eating. Archie is still at Verg. He is eating, gaining his strength and even playing.

Archie has severe dental disease.

He also has a bad upper respiratory infection, is anemic and his blood markers are indicative of infection and/or cancer (hopefully not cancer).
Many people donated money to pay for Archie’s vet bill. (See GoFundMe)
Thank you to everyone who took care of Archie – from the first person who stopped to give him food and then alerted the community to all who have cared for him. I am so grateful that our community has kind people who would care for of a sick cat they just met.

August 20, 2024When You Elect a Man Without a Finance Background for Comptroller…..

Comptroller Brad Lander posted a video on social media today bragging that the NYC Pension system achieved a combined 10% return. (See video)

Lander doesn’t have the background to understand why 10% is not a good return. If he understood the market, he wouldn’t have made that video!

Councilman Joe Borelli shared this message:

For Comptroller Lander, the 10% is a big deal since this was the headline in May 2023: (See story)

Brad Lander didn’t say anything when the fund lost so much money! While the NYC pensions lost that amount, NYC had to make up that amount for the pensions.
Errol Louis, anchor from Spectrum News didn’t think it was fair to compare the pension fund to S&P. He said a better match would be Russell 3000.

Russell 3000 also performed a lot better:

In 2021, the pensions were doing a lot better. Back then, Ray McGuire told us that they were underperforming and could be handled a lot better.

Councilman Justin Brannan and Senator Andrew Gounardes pushed Brad Lander for Comptroller because he was their friend.

The government isn’t a fifth grade “friend contest”, people need the qualifications to do the job well.
