Is St. Anselm or OLA Closing? No. They Are Working Together To Share Resources

For the past few months, people have been discussing that Saint Anselm Church and OLA are combining. Many people were concerned that one of the churches would be closed and the property would be sold.

This week, Bay Ridge residents reminisced about how much they missed Theresa’s beautiful voice singing at mass at St. Anselm on Christmas. Bay Ridge residents asked me what was happening.

Rev. Kevin Abels, the Pastor of St. Andrews and Our Lady of Angels (Seen here) told me that both churches are staying open. He said that Saint Anselm and OLA will be sharing resources between the two parishes.

Mass attendance at many Catholic Churches has been low since the pandemic. OLA no longer has an elementary school, so fewer families may be attending mass as well. The shortage of priests also necessitates churches to share priests.

On January 6th, representatives from OLA and St. Anselm will meet at St. Anselm to discuss committee work. St. Anselm shared information about their first meeting in the bulletin.

The pastor of St. Anselm Church, Father John Hwang let the community know what was happening:

Father Kevin was very optimistic about the parishes working together and becoming stronger.

If you are making a New Years Resolution to volunteer, call OLA at 718-836-7200 and leave your name and number.

OLA is looking for some altar servers:

And OLA does a good job helping people in need:

If you want to help, drop off items at the church at 7320 – 4th Avenue.

Andrew Gounardes Releases Graphic, But Is Not Transparent About Spending

Senator Andrew Gounardes released a graphic stating that he brought over five million dollars to this district. If five million (or even one million) was spent in Bay Ridge, shouldn’t we be able to see it?

Senator Gounardes has not been able to provide transparency on where money was used.

In the past, my husband wrote to him and ask where the tax money went for this district. It took Gounardes staffer, Tori months to respond to the email. She provided a list of organizations, but did not show how much money each receive. When my husband asked for that information, she did not respond.

Mathlde Frontus easily provided transparency every semester she was office. Why can’t Gounardes?

Andrew Gounardes gave a big check to an organization in Manhattan. (See here) That group backs Democrats. While the group claimed to be an anti-gun organization, they didn’t take action or speak out when 15-year-old Foridun Maulonou was shot and killed on 20th Avenue and 62nd Street in Brooklyn. (Info)
