May 1, 2025Megan’s Bench Was Restored Again – Shore Road

The beautiful rainbow bench on Shore Road was made in memory of Megan. Info:
The bench was defaced for the fourth time this week. Hate is strong.
Each time it’s had graffiti, someone take the time to repaint it because they know that the bench means a lot to many people in our community.
Thank God for all the Ridgites who cared enough to carry a rainbow of paints to the Shore Road bike path and cover the area with hope!

May 1, 2025The NYS Assembly Passed the Medical Aide in Dying Act

This week, the NYS Assembly voted in favor of the Medical Aide in Dying Act.
I’m surprised the bill was brought to the floor. It’s a very controversial topic, Assemblyman Mike Tannousis voted against the bill and used social media to explain why he was against the bill. Listen here:
This week, I voted against the Medical Aid in Dying Act. I recognize the profound emotional weight of this issue. Witnessing a loved one suffer at the end of life is truly devastating, and every individual deserves dignity and compassion during such a difficult time, especially… pic.twitter.com/MPXZ2TgPHJ

In 2017, the Brittany Maynard story brought to light MAID (Medical Aide in Dying). Maynard was 29-years-old woman living in California and she had terminal brain cancer. She was given six months to live. California does not allow MAID. She and her family moved from California to Oregon, so she could choose a physician’s assisted suicide to end her life. More info:

Will the bill pass the NYS Senate? Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, who represents Staten Island and Coney Island shared that she is supporting the bill.

Senator Andrew Gounardes did not share his view on this bill or how he would vote because he was too busy mocking Republicans on social media today (every day). Let’s vote for an adult, who isn’t interested in playing on social media, Bay Ridge.

The Bay Ridge Memorial Day Parade is Monday, May 26th and starts at 11:00 am on 3rd Avenue and 78th Street. IT’S RAIN OR SHINE!

The veterans love when Bay Ridge cheers and claps for them!
Strolling Around 777 recorded the parade last year:
If you are up early, this is actually worth seeing as well on Shore Road and 81st Street at 10:00 am.

Some Bay Ridge businesses will have barbecues and red, white and blue drink specials. Last Year:

April 30, 2025NYPD Fatally Shot Man Driving a Stolen Vehicle on the Belt Parkway Near Bath Beach

Around 8:00 pm, a 28-year-old man was shot by the police near Exit 13 on the Belt Parkway. The man was driving a Porche with PA plates that did not match.
Police tried to pull the driver over, but he refused.
Further up the Belt Parkway, other police officers set up a roadblock. The Porche swerved to avoid the roadblock and almost hit an NYPD lieutenant.
The police fired their gun and hit the driver. “The suspect was taken to the hospital where he later died. He was on federal probation for trafficking stolen cars from Pennsylvania to New York.” (Source: https://abc7ny.com/post/brooklyn-nypd-shooting-investigation-underway-man-killed-during-attempt-stop-suspected-stolen-car/16286143/)
The passenger in the Porche was taken into custody.
RIP.

April 30, 2025Car Accident on Ft. Hamilton & 69th Street

Around 4:30 pm this afternoon, there was a bad accident involving a MTA bus, a white car and black SUV.
The small white car was smoking. The worker at the UPS store at 6823 Fort Hamilton Parkway ran to the car to help the person get out of the car. A nearby business owner called the police.
The driver of the SUV was taken away in handcuffs.
The passenger in the small white car needed an ambulance. Hopefully, they weren’t seriously hurt.

April 30, 2025When Foridun Maulonou Was Killed, No Mom Demanded Action in Brooklyn. No Politicians Took Action

In July 2023, 15-year-old, Foridun Maulonou was shot and killed in Brooklyn. No Moms Demanded Action anywhere in Brooklyn.
Senator Andrew Gounardes won’t tell you that. Andrew loves to take photos, but he didn’t do anything when a 15-year-old was shot on 62nd Street and 20th Avenue in Brooklyn. Info:
https://nypost.com/2023/07/18/boy-15-dies-after-broad-daylight-shooting-in-nyc-cops
Gounardes gave $50,000 of our district’s money to New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. Why didn’t they take action when there was gun violence in Brooklyn. We have never seen them do anything.

Where were these New Yorkers Against Gun Violence? Not one person from that group took action.

April 29, 2025TD Five Boro Bike Tour on Sunday, May 4th

People love the TD Five Boro Bike Tour that is taking place on Sunday, May 4th, except those who need to get around on Sunday! 32,000 people wearing helmets will be participating.
(Click here to see this larger)

This is a 40 mile leisure bike tour through the boroughs.
In our area, the cyclists will be on the highway, but there is a lot of traffic on the streets as cars are diverted to different streets because of the bike tour.

This ride closes the Brooklyn Queens Expressway from Atlantic Ave to over the lower level of the Verrazano Bridge (both ways) from 12:00 am Sunday morning to 7:00 pm.

Streets are open in Bay Ridge, but the Gowanas and the lower level of the Verrazzano Bridge is closed. You can use the upper level of the Verrazzano is open going both ways, but there is a lot of traffic.

The traffic is a mess in Bay Ridge from 1-7 pm. We got caught in it three years ago – traffic was at a standstill on many streets

Since people can’t use the BQE, the streets are jammed – try leave the area very early and return later OR do a local day in Bay Ridge.

Some people asked where they can they watch the TD Bike Tour in Bay Ridge.
Unlike the NYC marathon, the bike tour travels on the Gowanas Expressway to the lower level of the Verrazzano Bridge. You can see the bike riders from the 92nd Street Overpass.

If you have a view of the Gowanas Expressway, you would be able to see the cyclists enjoying their ride.
You can see photos of the ride here.
