Roller Skating in Industry City

A new roller skating rink opened in industry city – Dreamland Roller Disco!

The cost is $18 and includes the skate rental, coat/bag check  and a shoe cubby area to put your shoes – not lockers. You skate as long as you like.

It takes awhile to get in because they have to have each person sign the waiver and hey only have one iPad.

You can purchase your skate ticket online so you can get in faster.

They have skates for kids as well as adults and they are in good condition.  See pic

If your child or you don’t know how to skate, there are one hour skate classes. See here

The website says this is skating for children 7+, but no one checks the age and there is no height requirement.

The place is warm so wear a shirt under a sweatshirt so you can take it off.

Cocoa Grinder is Opening at The Coop’s Old Spot

Glad to see these signs!

Cocoa Grinder is opening at 9504 4th Avenue. This was The Coop’s old storefront. The beloved Coop coffee shop/eatery initially closed for renovations, but on November 27th announced that they would not reopen in the same location

The old owners have nothing to do with this new store. Some rumors were saying they were part owners – they are not. We hope they will create another quality place for Ridgites to gather soon.

Cocoa Grinder’s owner is very community-oriented. Although I don’t know Abdul Elenani, he’s someone I admire because he forgave quickly and  when people were being inappropriate, he put out a message of kindness because that’s who he is.

This location is  right near the 95th Street Station and their coffee is good too!  See their menu here. Update: They opened – the place looks EXACTLY the same. They even have the same toys in the back.  The workers are even the same as the ones who worked at The Coop.

We wish Abdul and this new Cocoa Grinder a lot of success in this new location!

Francine LaBarbara, the mother of twin fifteen year old boys was killed by a car today in the crosswalk on Avenue Y  and West 2nd Street around 8:00 am this morning in , Brooklyn.  Francine was just steps away from her home.  The driver fled the scene and the police are asking for any tips about the accident.

Francine LaBarbara, 57 years old was the  Marketing Executive for a popular bagel store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Both of LaBarbara’s son attend prestigious Catholic high schools in Manhattan. They appeared in the Brooklyn Reporter in 2017 because of their academics and service in the community. Francine must have been so proud to have two amazing sons! Now they are going to grow up without a mother because someone couldn’t drive at a normal speed or even stop to help Francine when they hit her.

See news story here

RIP Francine. Prayers for her sons and family.

The Best Christmas Event in Bensonhurst

The New Utrecht Reformed Church is on 18th between 83rd and 84th Street. Each year, they hold a live nativity.

One year I accidentally ran into this as I was going to a pharmacy on 18th Avenue. I had to pick up a prescription for a family member that wasn’t available more locally.  As I came out of the pharmacy, I heard soft music playing and saw the live nativity.  I walked over and watched them set up…….and I felt the magic of Christmas that sometimes adults find it hard to find in busy holiday seasons.

I return each year with a cup of coffee and someone who has never seen the Live Nativity before so I can see the magic through their eyes.

On Saturday, December 15th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, the New Utrecht Reformed Church will be having the live nativity. They are also reopening their church the following day – see here.
