May 11, 2019Swastika Drawn on the Shore Road Bike Path
![]()
An incorrectly drawn swastika appeared on the Shore Road Bike path earlier today. There were some numbers next to the swatika. A resident reported it and it was removed.
Immediately, Senator Andrew Gournardes and Councilman Brannan issued the statement above. While both politicians had a busy Saturday, they still took the time to speak out about hate.
Although this did not happen in Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus’ district, she did speak out against the hate and explain why communities need to be united against the hate. I appreciate that Dr. Frontus took the time to do this.

Some people want to ignore this and not give attention to the graffitti. But this is not just graffitti – this is hate looking for a home in our community. If it is ignored, those who did it think people support it and it empowers them. The numbers with the swastika might suggest that this is an older teen or adults so the message has to be clear to this person.
Nicole Malliotakis is the NY Assembly woman in charge of the Shore Road bike path area. She didn’t make a statement because she no longer has an office here and isn’t connected to this community. After someone on her team sees this, she may issue a statement.
Congressman Rose also spoke out against the hate:

We believe that it was done by a teen because of the backwards symbol. Dear teen: Don’t make this a habit because soon you will be caught. Although your parents forgot to tell you this is a crime and things like this are taken a lot more seriously now than they were years ago. This past November, teens in Brooklyn were arrested for this – see here
It’s harder to be a parent now because there are all these discussions you have to have with a teenager who doesn’t want to hear anything other than the word ‘YES’ and your wallet opening.

May 11, 2019Mafalda DiMango Way Was Named in Brooklyn
The sun was shining today as 81st Street between 15th and 16th Ave was named Mafalda DiMango Way. She video here.
Senator Gounardes shared the picture above and Chris McCreight from Councilman Brannan’s office shared the picture below.

Mafalda DiMango died last August and the community continues to honor her. Last year, a school auditorium was named in Mafalda’s honor.

May 11, 201968th Precinct Responds to 2.5 Year Old Tweet
![]()
Someone new must be working at the 68th Precinct and received access to the Twitter account this week. He or she read Bay Ridge Driver’s tweet from 2.5 years ago (November 2016) and responded to it (probably not realizing how old the tweet was)
![]()
While residents joked about the police’s tweet, we didn’t see the humor.
Everyone has seen the video – it’s the street corner of the former state senator’s home. I wrote about it last year – See here. A street light was not added there and the NYPD looked away for years. This video was even on the evening news! And still nothing was done about it.
That’s how we know it has to be a new employee accessing the 68th Precinct’s account – a better cop who hasn’t been turned by the system yet.

May 10, 2019Verrazzano Bridge Jumper Died
A 35-year old man pulled his car over to the side of the road on the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. He jumped and his body has been recovered. He must have jumped very fast because there no one tweeted or shared pictures of a man on the bridge. He was DOA. Story here
May this person RIP. May his soul be free and go to God.
Prayers for his family who will be devastated by this news.
One day a politician who cares enough will put up a fence around the bridge so that people, time and resources are saved.
I’ve been watching this for years (see here), but Diane Savino and Nicole Malliotakis keep getting elected so ns.o change happens.

May 9, 2019Bike Lane Coming to 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge? Nooooo
Bay Ridge needs a protected bike lane throughout the whole area. I thought they decided to use 7th Avenue, but apparently, they are thinking of putting a bike lane on 3rd Avenue (see picture above – it has 3rd Avenue marked out in addition to 7th Avenue).
I hope they change their mind!
Third Avenue is crowded as it is with delivery trucks for the stores and people double parking so they can run in and get a few items from their favorite places. Don’t get mad at them for doing that – parking is a commodity around here.
Radio Free Bay Ridge shared these slides and the meeting notes here.
Although I strongly support bike lanes, I wouldn’t want them to be on 3rd Avenue. Let’s hope they change their mind and get a protected bike lane for 7th Avenue to keep everyone safe.
