Bishop Kearney is Closing

Bishop Kearney High School is closing on August 31, 2019.

This sad news was announced at the school to the students today and the parents had a meeting this evening at 5:00 pm with Dr. Minson. Parents asked if the current students could be phased out, but Dr. Minson said that was not an option.  The girls may be transferred to Fontbonne High School and other Catholic High Schools.

The news must have come unexpectedly to the school, as they accepted students and offered scholarships to the incoming class. How awful it must be for the current students to be losing their school….especially the current juniors who spent three years there!

From Kearney:

Also there is a FAQ about the closing here

The changing demographics of the area, rising cost of running a school and Xaverian High School accepting girls must have affected the enrollment at Kearney.

There is a universal Pre-K  occupying a wing of Bishop Kearney’s building which had to bring in money, but not enough. They would not consider going co-ed to save the school.

It was an amazing school to attend!  Maybe someone with a lot of money will save it. I imagine some Kearney girls will try to rally to save it….if the costs aren’t too high. The school will no longer hold reunions and hopes that the graduates continue to hold reunions.

Alumni keep in contact on here – great pics and stories.

If you need a transcript request one here.

:(

If you went there, you know…..once a Kearney girl, always a Kearney girl!!

Makerspace Opening at Bklyn Army Terminal

A Makerspace is opening in Sunset Park!  See here

The logo looks like the Staten Island Makerspace so they must have expanded….which is good because they know what they are doing.

Lee and I have took a laser cutting class over there and it was fantastic!

A place to build and create items out of wood, metal and other materials.

Senator Gounardes is Making Improvements

No bells sound for big events in life, but they should!  If they did, they would be ringing for Senator Andrew Gounardes this weekend!

On Saturday, Gounardes sponsored an Iftar Dinner in Bay Ridge.  Other years, there have been smaller-scale Iftar dinners hosted by a Bay Ridge business (see here or  here), but this was a ‘Bay Ridge Community Dinner’ at Owls Head Park. Gounardes served his constituents as they broke fast on May 11th.  We’ve had a large Muslim population in Bay Ridge for a long time….Why did it take so long to have an Iftar dinner for them? I’m glad we have the right person as our Senator.   Both Councilman Brannan and Senator Gounardes were thanked for the dinner – see here

On Sunday, May 12th Gournardes was with Governor Cuomo because Cuomo was signing Gournardes’ bill to put speed cameras by many schools. Senator Gounardes promised to make NYC streets safer when he campaigned in the Fall.

Hear Senator Gounardes speak about the bill  here. Gounardes’ credited the Advocates for Safe Streets for their work.

It was also Mother’s Day and you can see his Mom couldn’t be more proud. I mean what else can you ask for than for your son to be an honest politician doing the right thing for his community and NYC?  That’s pretty rare.

Gounardes has only been in office for four months – can’t wait to see what he will tackle next!
