RIP Allen Bortnick
We were sorry to hear about the passing of Allen Bortnick that was announced at the Community Board 10 Meeting. Allen died earlier in the Spring, but Community Board 10 was recently notified.
Allen was 88 years and still serving on our Community Board…and he was still a power house. We were glad to see he was an outspoken member at meetings.
In the Fall, I contacted Allen after hearing him speak at a Community Board 10 Meeting. He said something very interesting and I wanted to find out more information. I didn’t reach him on the first contact, but he called me back immediately. Allen was informative, helpful and a true gentleman. I laughed a lot as we talked.

When interviewed for the paper, Allen Bortnick said he made more than 45 calls to 311 in a year!
Bortnick had bad television reception on Shore Road in 2011 and he let the news know. See here

He wrote to the paper when he wanted action on 86th Street. Allen had the Bortnick plan to place a police tower on 86th Street. LOL.
Like many Bay Ridge residents, Bortnick had trouble parking and he came up with a plan because he needed parking close to home. It was worth a try!
Allen may not have been everyone’s cup of tea, but this neighborhood really mattered to him. BTW, did I mention that I never had a grandfather, so I love everyone else’s?
RIP Allen Bortnick – I’m glad I had the chance to speak this Bay Ridge OG. I hope the community honors this long-time community activist in some way.

While most people in Bay Ridge aren’t fans of Mayor de Blasio, we aren’t going to let Bobby Capano play the blame game here either. Anti-semetic remarks have come from individuals in the Republican Party in Brooklyn. (Story here)
Last March, we saw a staffer who worked for Marty Golden have a social media exchange which was hateful.
WHERE WAS BOB CAPANO’S OUTRAGE THEN? Where was Bob Capano’s article calling out the anti-semetic remark?
When this happened last year, many leaders spoke out against it, but they weren’t from the Republican Party. The response from the Republican Party should have been immediate and condemned the nonsense rhetoric.
The newspapers had a lot of time to share the story because Golden’s response was not immediate. The staffer wrote that message on Facebook on March 24th. Other politicians denounced the hate by March 26th. As the days went on, it appeared as if Golden was waiting to see if the story was going to go away. Golden’s office announced on the March 27th that he was fired. (See here)
Why hasn’t Bob Capano look inward at the Republican Party?
Capano claims he lives in Bay Ridge…..why won’t he speak out against ALL hate? Why is the answer to point the finger rather than address the issue?
Why didn’t Bob Capano lead the party in calling out this in Bay Ridge? C’mon.
We have no idea if Capano lives in Bay Ridge, but it’s okay if he wants to ignore hate.
Our community chose strong leadership under Gounardes, Frontus and Brannan and these leaders don’t miss a beat when there is hate in this community.

NARS is pleased to have artist Zuleyka Alejandro, to lead the Sculpey Shapes Workshop on Saturday, June 22nd, 2-4 pm. The workshop will take place at NARS Foundation 201 46th St, 4th floor, Brooklyn, NY, 11220.
In the workshop families will create imaginary organic forms in miniature 3D sculptures. You can learn the additive and substrative methods, as well as pinch, pull, coil and score. Come learn basic technical components and processes of clay while exercising your imagination, we will have images of microscopical organism, different plants and amazing sea life to inspire our creations.
The workshop is suitable for children from 4 to 12 years.
NARS will provide all necessary materials and support.

Cami is a Chiweenie. I had a miniature dachshund for 18 years that looked just like her. She was an amazing dog.
