Pols Respond to Bike Enthusiasts in Bay Ridge

Senator Gounardes, Assemblywoman Frontus and Councilman Brannan wrote to Keith Bray, the Brooklyn Borough Commissioner for Transportation.

Bike enthusiasts took Community Board 10’s refusal of many lanes hard, so the elected politicians asked Bray to override Community 10’s Recommendations. Two days later, it was reported by special interests groups that this was taken care of.

While I think it is good that the pols heard all sides and tried to give bikers some space to ride, there was no reason to reinstate all the lanes CB 10 said NO to. I imagine that the residents who spoke out about the bike lanes will be disappointed to see this letter. This is an abuse of power and makes our community board powerless. I’m sorry to all the people on Community Board 10 who took the time to come up with ideas and be a voice for our neighborhood.

I don’t think bike enthusiasts will ever be satisfied. Many seemed like this was an all or nothing thing.

Most bothersome to me is that many non-residents are chiming in on this topic. There concern isn’t residents here. See:

I’ve seen bike enthusiasts do this in other neighborhoods and then six months later, those people live in another state…..like this is a past-time of theirs because they are bored. No doubt there are people who care about safe roads and bike safety, but they aren’t the ones crying on social media.

Seventh Avenue will have a protected bike lane and hopefully residents will advocate for more of those in the future.  The DOT seems eager to put paint on the street and leave because it is cheap and fast, rather than take the time to build the protected lane for safety.  The pols didn’t think we deserved better OR DESERVED TO BE HEARD FROM.

Bay Ridge Prep at 7509 Shore Road

A neighbor to 7509 Shore Road in Bay Ridge discovered that Bay Ridge Prep School has leased the building from the Redemptorist Fathers.

Tonight at the CB 10 meeting, the Bay Ridge resident explained that this shouldn’t exist in a residential area. He asked for Community Board 10 to refuse any development here.

Doris Cruz explained that a school is allowed in a residential area.  We feel terrible for him! That’s going to bring a lot of traffic to that area as parents will be dropping off children and if older children are using the building, some may be driving.

Can you imagine getting stuck with a school  next door to your home?  Before moving to Bay Ridge, I looked at Mafalda DiMango’s home which was next door to a school. The home was priced to sell and cheaper because it was next to a school.  We didn’t buy the home because of its location.

Tonight was Doris’ last night running the CB 10 meeting. She will still be part of Community Board 10, so we will still hear from her.

Tonight her husband was with her and they are just sooo cute together.
