In 1968, Jeff Samaha had a dream. A Chorus. A HUGE Chorus! He called people. They showed up and 6 months later, in April of 1969, the first performance of Ridge Chorale was realized. 50 years later, Ridge Chorale, the theater company that brought Les Miserables, Marry Poppins, Beauty and the Beast and most recently, Annie to Bay Ridge, is the oldest continuous performing arts company in South Brooklyn. RIP Allen Abbott – Abboco Jewelry Store

Just heard the news that Allen Abbott, owner of  Abboco Jewelry at 8323 5th Avenue passed on last week. Abboco’s was the small store next to Tacos Napal: (see below)

If you went to Abboco, you knew Allen was a honest businessman. I’ve been encouraged by several people to share the story of “my buyer.”
I never had anything to sell at Allen’s. But many years ago, a friend of mine inherited an amazing coin collection from her uncle. She asked me to help her figure out what it was worth. I found all of the coins, but one didn’t list the value online. She had several hundred dollars worth of coins. We decided to go to Abboco because it was close to her uncle’s apartment. Before going, we made a plan on how to leave the store if the owner was trying to lowball us. I put on my “Brooklyn look” and we went into the store. Allen looked over her items and beamed when he saw the one coin we couldn’t find the value for. He told her that it was very valuable. She left the place with quite a bit of money….and went on vacation. Yep he was an honest man to two young women who had no idea what they had.
Each time friends had a collection, I brought them to my man Allen. He did right by everyone.
RIP Allen.

9/11 – We Still Remember 18 Years Later

To qualify, you must be a NYC resident 60 years of age or older and demonstrate financial need.

HOME REPAIRS PERFORMED INCLUDE:
Installing locks, peepholes, doorbells, window guards and other security-related hardware
Installing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms

Fixing washers in leaking faucets
Light carpentry work such as fixing broken stairs and some furniture
Fixing damaged drywall
Replacing or repairing flooring in small areas

Spectrum Store on 86th Street in Bay Ridge
It’s there behind the tree – that was formerly Panera’s store front.

Between Modells and the frozen yogurt shop on 86th Street is the Spectrum store at 531 – 86th Street.
It’s open every day 10:00 am – 8:00 pm, except Sunday, it’s open 12:00 – 5:00 pm. See here

RIP Enzo Farachio

Enzo Farachio….he was just 10 years old. He was supposed to celebrate his 11th birthday at Great Adventure in a few weeks.

Update 9/11: Enzo’s uncle, Christian Pena was on the news today. (See video here) He was heartbroken. He wants to know what caused this accident, not only because he wants justice, but because he wants to make sure this doesn’t happen to any other children. His uncle saw the video

Tonight his family is in Midwood, Brooklyn grieving because Enzo was killed after school while waiting for the bus to go home. Info here (it’s awful) and here

“A gray Lexus SUV, heading north on Ocean Avenue, veered right and went onto the sidewalk where Enzo was standing, according to police.” (Source)
Alexander Katchaloft, the 60-year-old driver had an 8-year-old girl in his car, was also taken to the hospital with pelvis and arm injuries (Source) It was reported that Katchaloft’s vehicle received tickets for speeding in school zones – see here
Mr. Katchaloft should turn his license over to the state immediately! If he has a medical condition, we never want to see him driving AGAIN.

Look at how wrecked his car is….I hope this is going to be investigated.

Hearing that is was “a possible medical condition” doesn’t make the news any easier to hear or understand….a little boy who should be here with his family and friends is dead. A middle school community of children will be mourning Enzo’s death tomorrow.

Enzo loved the family’s dog. Less than a month ago, Enzo made his first video on Youtube. Like many children his age, he liked the game Roblox. His video shows his Roblox game skills and creativity. He had just started sixth grade at Hudde Junior High School.

RIP Enzo. Many prayers for his family and community of friends who loved him. I can’t imagine how awful your coming days are. Mi mas sincero pesame. Lloramos contigo.

Opened and Closed on 86th Street

Hello Gourmet Fresh grocery store on 86th Street. It’s beautiful! Flowers are sold on the side of the store.
Across the street are empty shops. The shop below is 539 – 86th Street (it used to be a woman’s clothing store) .
Go rent it people….Why? Because Sephora is moving in down the block and there is going to be a lot of traffic on 86th Street (women, teens and preteens are going to be all over that store).

The 86th Street BID should list their stores and give people ideas of what could be there. A soup shop should go here so people could run in and get a soup!

Filming in Dyker Heights – September 13th

Law and Order: SVU is filming in Dyker Heights!
On Friday, September 13th, they will be filming on 84th Street between 16th and 17th Avenues. There were also some signs near the cemetery on the Avenue from 83rd Street to 84th Street.
Signs were posted earlier this week because cars need to be moved by 10:00 pm on Thursday, September 12th.

80th Street Old Timers Stickball Game 9/28

One day someone will make a movie about these Bay Ridginals. Every year a group of old friends meets on 80th Street on a Saturday in September. Their story is one based on friendship and the game of stickball which they pass on to their family and this community.

While many of the original players have moved away from the area, they still return each year to play a game a stickball. They agreed to do this many years ago. They bring their children to play and invite the community to participate in their game. Many cheer from the sidelines.
At the end of the day awards are given out – even to onlookers who watch the game. Afterwards, they head to JJ Bubbles to celebrate history in the making!
