October 20, 2019It’s a Beer Store is Expanding on Third Avenue
The empty shop which was once C&S Jewelry Store was renovated and then windows are now covered with paper that has beer bottles on it. It’s across the street from Walgreens on 94th Street and 3rd Avenue. See here
We asked the owner of the It’s Not Just a Beer Store (or It’s a Beer Store…..whatever) if they knew who was opening there. They said it was them!
This is a 24 hour store and it has a lot of traffic because the owner is super friendly!

October 20, 2019John DeAngelo, a Dyker Heights Hero
The reason people want to live in Dyker Heights is because it is a beautiful neighborhood. John DeAngelo and his neighbors care about their streets. He’s just a good guy – this is not the first time I have seen DeAngelo speak up for his neighbors1
DeAngelo has taken the time to voice his concern about the rain garden because they aren’t functioning correctly in NYC and the empl0yees at the DEP aen’t taking care of them as planned. DeAngelo has a petition to stop NYC from installing rain gardens in his area. Go John! Story here
Last year, the city started adding rain gardens to streets. At first, I really liked the idea because I LOVE GARDENS. But the rain garden in urban Brooklyn isn’t a garden. It’s a rectangular area with a tree planted in the center where people throw their garbage and dogs poop. It’s gross.
Other Dyker Heights residents have voiced their opposition to the rain gardens because they take up too much of the sidewalk – see here. Dyker Heights has a lot of children and seniors, so NYC shouldn’t count on them walking single file to get past rain guards.
This Summer, right before school started. my husband and I went to Nostrand Avenue, so I could get some supplies and baskets. The block is filled with rain gardens and I didn’t want my husband to park near them because the weeds in the rain garden were knee height and wild. It was obvious they weren’t cleaned out in months because they were filled with garbage as well.
The problem with the rain garden is the design is wrong for urban areas. If they made the rain garden taller and not so wide, many seniors would like to garden in them. The design also needs to be closed so that dogs don’t walk in them. NYC doesn’t have one size fits all streets, so why is there one size for the rain garden? There are many gardeners in NYC who would love to plant flowers in these gardens, if only they reconsidered the design so dogs weren’t able to have access.
Below are three smaller rain gardens, that have the backs closed and they have been kept clean. The problem with these is that the trees keep dying. The city has replaced the tress after many months, but they are dead again. These might be the wrong type of trees in for a rain garden.
The city should install them where people welcome them.
If you’re getting a rain garden in front of your home, there will be green paint markings on your cement.

Mr. Bagels on 3rd Avenue between 94th and 95th Street (where Bake Ridge Bagels used to be – across from Walgreens) has Help Wanted signs up. They are getting close to opening as they removed most of the paper in the front of the store.

Not only will this save lives, it will save a lot of time and money as it is time-consuming to recover bodies. And of course it will stop the delays on the morning bridge.

During the early morning hours, 20-30 cars were vandalized in Bay Ridge – tires were slashed and cars were keyed from 81st and Shore Road to 95st Street. All the cars were on the parkside of the street.

October 17, 2019When Brooklyn Politicians Don’t Vote For Brooklyn
Here’s who voted for NYC to close Rikers Island:
Sad to see Justin Brannan vote yes.
We’re sad to see this because Brannan represents Bay Ridge Brooklyn. Are many families from Bay Ridge calling for Riker’s to be closed?
If it was about the black and brown people as they claim, the vote would have been to move those people immediately.
The politicians just voted to use a developer to build more prisons. Mayor de Blasio wanted it and his minions voted with him. See here.
James O’Neil, the NYPD Commission is concerned because the four jails will only have 3,300 beds, while Rikers has 7,200 beds.
Realize many politicians will be out of a job because of term limits so they don’t care.
Boerum Hill, Brooklyn will receive the new jail. Did home owners there deserve a jail in their neighborhood? Brannan’s vote wasn’t available on his social media. One reason people loved Vinnie Gentile is he was transparent – he easily shared why he voted for something. No one even asks Brannan anymore because he cries when you don’t agree with him.

When he started being a councilman he was a lot more open.
Four boroughs will receive jails. Staten Island won’t receive a jail…..so you know where they will be sending all the criminals in Staten Island – to Brooklyn.
This had very little to do with the prisoners and more to do with the developers who will build the four jails and take over Riker’s Island.
The people who voted to close Riker’s Island are the same people who let Mayor de Blasio do whatever he wants.
I always check Chaim Deutsch’s vote and he never disappoints.
Eric Ulrich was out of town, so he wasn’t able to vote. He shared online that although Riker’s Island need to be closed, he would vote no.

October 17, 2019Bay Ridge Pumpkin Smasher

Maybe he doesn’t like the color orange or he just doesn’t like pumpkins, but the Bay Ridge Pumpkin Smasher has been caught on camera on 81st Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues!
Is this a Halloween prank? Apparently not because the 68th Precinct put out a notice:
The pumpkin smasher appeared as a photographer at On Pointe Dancewear Store at 7207 Third Avenue today. That’s him taking pictures below.
And neighbors said they saw him at The Bookmark Shoppe last night.
And of course the mean Pumpkin Smasher story has a sweet Bay Ridge hero making the world better. A good neighbor replaced the destroyed pumpkin you saw in video above because people care about children here – not just their own kids, but all kids. You can see the note larger here (If you left the pumpkin….you are amazing…thank you!)
The Bay Ridge Pumpkin Smasher also smashed a pumpkin two weeks ago….strangely at the end of this video, it looks like he is carrying a pet (cat or small dog?)
The top of his head appears to be bald in the video.
The news is having a good time with puns on this story. The television news called the story: ” Smashing Pumpkins.”
