Verrazzano Bridge Jumper on December 20, 2019

Update: The man died.  See here

A 34-year-old man jumped from the Verrazzano Bridge on Friday, December 20th right before 2:00 pm.  Story here  This is the third person to jump from the bridge in a few weeks.

He was on the upper-level of the bridge and jumped from the Brooklyn side.  See here

He was recovered from the water, given CPR and brought to a hospital in Staten Island. He probably won’t make it as only three people have survived a jump from the Verrazzano Bridge – see hereSadly, it was cold today, but the sky was beautiful  :(    See here

This is a hard time of the year for many people.

Prayers for the man’s family and friends who are receiving the news right before the holidays.

Rose Hage Fashions in Bay Ridge

Rose Hage Fashions is at 9219 3rd Avenue – it’s across the street from Starbucks.  They are also known as RHF (for Rose Hage Fashions). This family-owned business has been in Bay Ridge for over 50 years!

The store sells woman’s clothing for everyone – sizes extra small to 3x, so you can get Christmas gifts for anyone there! And if you are a hat-type person, they have beautiful hats.

Julie Thum, a realtor in Bay Ridge, did a tour of RHF.

RHF also has a men’s clothing store next door (Navarro’s Hardware is on the corner).

Yes, Justin Brannan’s Bill Has a Loophole

Update 12/18: Channel 1 News showed Eddie Cumart, the ice cream vendor. Cumart says his partners are veteran’s. The news said Cumart could make up to ten thousand in a weekend because all the other vendors were pushed out by Brannan’s bill. Cumart said he will never give up!  Councilman Brannan said he will sue the city – see his whole response here.

Councilman Justin Brannan and Senator Andrew Gounardes told us they were working on the Dyker Heights Lights vendor issue since last year. Apparently, Captain Cronwell was at the meeting last year too.

Brannan admitted that the vendor found a loophole at the CB 10 Meeting held in December.

One ice cream truck vendor found a loophole to the bill by hiring disable veterans. “Disabled veterans, under city law, are exempt from certain restrictions on street vending in order to give them an edge on the competitive licensing process.”

Brannan responded to the article on Facebook and Twitter.  See here

Brannan says the bill was clear and “THE CITY” needs to enforce the law. Who in “the city” does he think will enforce the law if Captain Cronwell is saying to the newspaper the veterans are within their rights?   (See article here

(There was a message to the ice cream man that appears to have disappeared….anyone got it?)

So how did a vendor outsmart the politicians, who sat around talking about the issue for hours since August and then told the press about it – see here and here.  Andrew Gounardes is an attorney – wouldn’t he have looked for  loopholes?

Dyker Heights has such a problem getting help for issues. It’s always press releases before anything else there! They can’t get help with simple problems and pols continue to take pics and send press releases. While I am sure the commercial traffic is less, the ice cream vendor is just a sign of the times where some people are above the law.

Maybe the pols should spend less time on the press releases and more time writing the bill and seeing who can outsmart the bill.

Fake Call for Recommendations on Social Media

Have you ever seen people who post political support for a candidate asking for recommendations on social media?

Right after the Bay Ridge Dems endorsed Bernie Sanders, a Socialist for president, one member of the group asked others to ask for recommendations in a community group. The reason:  so it would push down the  negative comments about the Bay Ridge Dems endorsement.  How shady!

So when you see a recommendation request, look below it. Someone in the community is probably talking about something that people don’t want you to know about. I imagine there will be a lot of that now as Bay Ridge deals with Socialists knocking on the door to support Bernie Sanders.

Coney Island – Where is Mark Treyger?

While small business owners in Coney Island, Brooklyn  fight against the huge rent hikes, where is their Councilman, Mark Treyger?  Story here and here

Treyger is term-limited, so he doesn’t care.

Store owner, Lola Star wrote: “Would you pay $60 for a Coney Island tee shirt? That’s what I would have to start charging (instead of $20 per tee shirt) if I accept this 400% (reduced from 500%) rent increase. It will make my Shop unaffordable to the average person and much of the local community. We cannot allow this to happen to Coney Island- especially on City owned land!”

“Ultimately, this high rent will mean the taxpayers pay twice. Businesses will have to raise their prices and Coney Island will no longer be affordable. This goes against the goal and the reason the City purchased this land. The land was purchased so Coney Island could remain the People’s Playground, an Amusement destination that is accessible to all demographics. Higher rents will mean higher prices. The tax payers paid for this land with their tax dollars and now they will have to pay AGAIN as they pay the higher prices the businesses will be forced to charge to afford these rent increases. Coney Island will become unaffordable.”
