Sally Kabel brought the entire Bay Ridge community together to rally around her as she battled leukemia.
Although her time with us was far too short, she filled those six years with a lifetime of joy and brought out the best in all of us. Proud to honor her memory today. pic.twitter.com/IRv7WxWqI0

March 2, 2020Councilman Brannan Fools Home Owners with Press Releases on Property Taxes
![]()
Justin Brannan keeps writing press releases about property taxes. Councilman Brannan hasn’t done anything to help home owners in Bay Ridge, so he shouldn’t be sending newspapers articles acting as if he is doing something.
A few months ago, Brannan played the same game with an article to the paper. A financial expert wrote a response and explained why Brannan’s idea would be harmful to older home owners. See here and here
We asked Justin last year about freezing the property tax rate last year. Brannan said it wasn’t a good idea. This weekend, Brannan and Borelli had an article in the paper suggesting that the property tax rate be frozen. Their article didn’t suggest that overtaxed areas be frozen – it was for all areas to be frozen.
Dyker Heights home conversions haven’t been addressed with anything but press releases as well. People are waiting for Brannan to do something. Yet, Brannan doesn’t know what to do or is afraid to proceed against his party. He’s been in office for two years and there have been no changes.
If a politician has done something, then they should write a press release. If their “something” is the press release and there is no action, we have a problem!
I wish Councilman Brannan would stop playing politics on this topic. We get that it’s not important to him. If it was, Brannan would have met with the Council members who are representing the overtaxed areas and made a bill.
Justin Brannan is a lawmaker and he is able to write a law for us, but has not done so.

March 1, 2020Staten Island St. Paddy’s Day Parade
![]()
If you are Irish, you probably have a story about an ancestor who was excluded from interviewing for jobs because they saw signs in New York windows with the message: “No Irish Need to Apply.”
Every year, the Staten Island St. Paddy’s Day Parade organizers refuse to let Pride Center of Staten Island to march with their banner. They had the Rainbow Run:
.
A massive showing of support today for the #SILGBTQ community.
We are proud to show up and stand with the @pridecenterSI. #StatenIrelandPride

Their decision tells every teen in Staten Island that it is not okay to be who you are. While the parade organizers will justify the exclusion by saying, “it’s a non-sexual identification parade.” Supporters for the Pride Center know this more about identity and acceptance. It’s a hard thing for teenagers, who are trying to figure out who they are hear that people can’t march if they belong to the LGBTQ community.
The Staten Island Community supported Pride Center:
.
So much #StatenIrelandPride along the parade route today! @pridecenterSI @RainbowRunSI #Silive pic.twitter.com/H6afD7Q9Ku

Businesses hung balloons in a rainbow of colors and posted these signs:
When people participate in a parade that excludes groups of people, it means they agree with that exclusion. An impressive and classy move was made by Councilman Joe Borelli. He is a well-loved and respected Councilman in Staten Island.
Councilman Joe Borelli was given a small rainbow flag pin, He fastened it to his vest. Parade marshals told Borelli he wouldn’t be allowed to march in the parade. “They physically blocked me,” said Borelli, who showed up with his wife and their two sons. “They called police on me. I spoke to a sergeant and was not going to make the life of our cops more complicated to prove a point,” he said. “I didn’t come looking for an argument. Story here and here.
Borelli didn’t do this as a way to “play politics.” It was very low key.
Play this video that Borough President Jim Oddo shared:
Hey @JoeBorelliNYC, want to rent this truck with me, be my co-pilot, and we can drive it down Forest Avenue next year?https://t.co/8RvKQsfDdY
— Jimmy Oddo (@HeyNowJO) March 1, 2020
The Staten Island Parade Organizers need to do better next year. Irish people party with everyone. Send the right message to the teens in Staten Island – be who you are and celebrate Irish culture! Here’s to no crying shamrocks next year.

March 1, 2020Green Bagels, Irish Soda Bread and Food in Bay Ridge
Where can I get green bagels in Bay Ridge?
Update here – for St.Paddy’s Day 2020 during the Coronavirus
- Bagel Boy 8002 – 3rd Avenue has the green bagels every year, but they also started carrying the popular rainbow bagels
Best Corned Beef and Cabbage in Bay Ridge
For St. Patrick’s Day, we mostly cook our own corned beef and cabbage. But this blog received several requests asking, “Where can I get the best corned beef and cabbage in Brooklyn?”
Many years ago, I went to Kennedy’s in Breezy Point, but there food didn’t have the same flavor as my family’s recipe. I would think the closest in Brooklyn would be Buckleys at 2926 Avenue S
- The Wicked Monk 9510 3rd Avenue has good corned beef and cabbage – we had it last year.
- Pippins Pub – 9023 3rd Avenue – I heard their corned beef and cabbage is great so we went here in 2018. It was very good.
- The Pour House has complimentary corned beef on March 17, 2019
- Kettle Black’s menu from last year:
- O’Sullivans 8902 3rd Avenue – We never had it.
- Salty Dog 7509 – 3rd Avenue
Salty Dog’s 2019:

Salty Dog 2018:
- Brooklyn Market sells corned beef and cabbage to pick up and bring home, but I haven’t tried it.
- M&M’s deli (behind the Bean Post) sells corned beef and cabbage and I was told it’s good.
- Mike’s Deli– 4th Avenue between 95th and 96th They deliver 718=238-5200

This was Mike’s platter last year:

- Brooklyn Firefly has corned beef calzones last year

- Annabelle’s Italian Restaurant – 86th Street had corned beef:
- Tanoreen Middle Eastern Restaurant which is well known for it’s amazing brussel sprouts, had corned beef with a lot of spices (which is not traditional at all, but I bet it’s delicious) Tanoreen is at 7523 3rd Avenue. See their menu
Schnitzel Haus – Bay Ridge’s German Restaurant has corned beef and cabbage on their seamless menu. Schnitzel Haus is at 7319 5th Avenue. If you like thickly cut corned beef, this place is for you! Schnitzel Haus has corned beef on March 16th and 17th.
Last year Loco Lobo 86th Street and 3rd Avenue – had a a green drink – for the Irish who love Mexican food.
Blue Agave also has a green drink for St. Patty’s Day!

Where can I get Irish soda bread in Bay Ridge? Again, this is something we make ourselves.
- Brooklyn Market had fresh soda bread last year when we decided to make a second St. Pats meal for some family who were out of town. It was good soda bread.
- I’ve had Leske’s soda bread – it’s not what I am used to, but it’s okay.
- A friend said she bought hers at Panentico and it was good (but she also said Irish soda bread was just bread with raisins, so what does she know?)
- Tasty Pastry has soda bread with seeds or without. Also Tastry Pastry sells the diabetic, sugar free soda bread if you need it for the Irishman who has diabetes.

March 1, 2020Interdependence Party Goes With Max Rose
In Brooklyn, we have seen The Interdependence Party side with the Republican and Conservative Party so it is surprising to see that endorsed Max Rose and not Nicole Malliotakis. See story here
If you live in Bay Ridge, you understand why they went with Rose. Malliotakis isn’t an effective leader.
Rose passed legislation to permanently fund the 9/11 Compensation Fund.
He’s looked for low cost answers to problems.
Rose isn’t a slacker. He’s responsive to the neighborhood and has a presence here.
The St. Paddy’s Day Parade is coming – come see if the people want Rose or Malliotakis!
