July 6, 2021Cuomo Declared Disaster Emergency on Gun Violence

Governor Cuomo was at John Jay for a press releated to declare NY a disaster emergency regarding gun violence.
Cuomo said, “We went from one epidemic to another – we went from the Covid epidemic to gun violence.”
Cuomo said that more people are dying from gun violence than Covid-19 in NY. Fifty-one people were shot over July 4th weekend (26 of those people were in NYC). Cuomo said, “Those weren’t fireworks that you were hearing, that was gunfire.”
Cuomo said, “Let’s start with the facts: Gun violence cost over $280 billion dollars for health care.”
Shootings are up 38% in NYC in 2021 compared to 2021.
Cuomo showed that gun violence discriminates and is hitting the black and brown societies hardest – just like Covid did. In New York State, 59% of gun violence is towards non-white individuals. In NYC, it was 77% of black and brown people who were victims of gun violence!
Governor Cuomo’s Seven Step Gun Violence Program:
1) Treat it like a public health emergency. He will treat gun violence in NY like he worked on the Covid emergency.
2) Target the hotspots – map the shootings and attack the clusters. Cuomo said, “4090 young men age 18-24 are responsible for 48% of the shootings.“
3) Have a positive engagement with the at-risk youth. He is going to get them training and careers in trades.
4) Break the cycle of the escalating violence. People who didn’t have a job or school had nothing to do.
5) Get guns off the street. 74% of guns come from out-of-state. Cuomo is declaring a border war to stop it. He said guns are coming from the South.
6) Get the guns out of the hands of dangerous people. If you have an active warrant, you can no longer buy a guin NYS. Cuomo will have New York State police work on stopping guns from coming into NYS.
7) Rebuild relationship of police and the community.
Cuomo is going to use $138 million to do this.
This is just a sign that Cuomo is running for re-election.

July 6, 2021College Student in Brooklyn In A Coma After 4th of July Visit to Coney Island

Many Brooklynites celebrated the Fourth of July in Coney Island and had a great time.
For one 21-year-old male college student, the 4th of July ended with him in the hospital. He is in a coma and on a ventilator because he can’t breath on his own. (Source)
The college student and his girlfriend went to Luna Park to enjoy the rides. Journalist, Bradley Devline reported that the student drove the Go Karts recklessly and received a warning from the staff. (Source)
Luna Park staff often give warnings to people because they have to keep people safe.
When the student went on the ride a second time and didn’t follow the directions, they were asked to leave the park. Then there was a fight between the man and the park’s security. The man hit his head on the sidewalk and was brought to NYU Langone.
Why wasn’t he brought to Coney Island Hospital which is closer to Luna Park?
The security guard was arrested, but released.
Hopefully the man will heal and be okay and out of a coma soon! If you are the praying type, please say some prayers for healing.

July 6, 2021Time for Salad on 86th Street in Bay Ridge Closed

I noticed Time for Salad on 86th Street (off 5th Avenue) had closed (photo above is from May 2021).
This was a nice take out place on 86th Street. But they had competition from Chipotle across the street. If they were in another location in the neighborhood, I think they would have done well.
