June 28, 2021Residents Petition Against the 84th Street Bike Lane

Remember Justin Brannan’s override of Community Board 10 to put bike lanes in Bay Ridge in Dyker Heights? (See here)
Well Dyker Heights residents aren’t happy with where the bike lanes were put. Today I saw they had a petition and this message on social media:

This bike lane runs along the street where there are many driveways in front of residential homes. The petition contends that there is a potential disaster and very unsafe conditions for both cyclists and automobile drivers.
Sadly, our City Councilman didn’t request covered bike lanes to protect the community and the children who live here.
If you don’t like the 84th Street bike lane or want to show support for the resident who live there and have to deal with it, fill out the petition here.
Ten years ago, my student died while riding her bike slightly outside of the area – 62nd and 21st Avenue. (See here – read the comments – five years after her death, her friends were able to drive to NJ and go to her grave).
I will always advocate for covered bike lanes because no parent should receive their news that their child died on the street, especially since it can be avoided. An no community should need to mourn the loss of a child when it is preventable.
