August 19, 2021Congresswoman Malliotakis Helps Constituents Out of Afghanistan

Afghanistan fell to the Taliban, but 10,000 – 15,000 Americans are stuck there. (Source) The US was able to move some people by plane.
Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis offered assistance for her constituents. Today, she announced that she was able to successful get a family evacuated.
This is great news!

Malliotakis explained how they will be brought back to America soon:

How scary it must be for people to be stuck overseas with the Taliban. People have called on the President to keep the US embassy open in Afghanistan. The embassy staff in Kabul was evacuated quickly when the Taliban entered. Now they are tweeting. (See here)

August 19, 2021Max Rose Will Be on Bill Maher on 8/20

Former Congressman Max Rose announced that he will be on Bill Maher’s show on Friday August 20, 2021 on HBO at 10:00 pm.
Rose will probably be speaking from a military perspective on Afghanistan as he tweeted about that this week. (See here)

Rose spoke on a show and supported the move in Afghanistan. I think he will have a hard time running in NY 11 because people KNOW the US should have taken Americans out of Afghanistan before this happened. Why are so many Americans stuck there now?
Malliotakis hasn’t missed a beat on this:

August 19, 2021Christian Santo Remembered

Christian Santo was a 27-year-old man who died of heart failure on August 17, 2020 in Bay Ridge.

How does God let this happen to a beautiful young man and his family? Asking that question shows our human-side. God chooses those who are ready to go home to Heaven. This young man was kind and good. That’s why God wanted him early.

In his pictures, he’s radiant.
Christian attended Poly Prep, Xaverian High School (see here) and St. Thomas Aquinas College.
Christian’s baseball number was 9. The Brooklyn Tides team all became #9 in Christian’s memory (see here) – so sweet!
I saw some people wrote about the Cyclones – Section 11 – Seat 9 being named in honor of Christian.

This was on Twitter:

Christian’s family is keeping their son’s name and spirit alive. They added something special to Shore Road. (See here)
They also started the Christian Santo Baseball Scholarship to be a blessing for students at St. Thomas Aquinas. (See here)
His parents are doing a good job bringing light into the world during the hardest season of their life. Children aren’t supposed to die before thier parents. ** Please Remember Them In Your Prayers, if you are the praying type. **

August 18, 2021RIP Gary Gilroy

So sad to hear that Gary Gilroy had passed away on August 17th. I had heard he wasn’t doing well.
I first met Gary when I was looking for a house in Bay Ridge years ago. He was super nice, upbeat and helpful. Although we didn’t find our home with him, he always knew me when I saw him (we both have alliterative names).

When I first saw Gary singing in the area, he was part of the Piranha Brothers. Over the years, I have seen him sing and play guitar with different people/bands in bars, the 3rd Avenue Festival and other places too (even in Breezy). He had a great voice, loved singing and making other people happy. He was loved by the audience and had a lot of friends/fans in Bay Ridge!
I imagine he’s met up with some other Bay Ridge greats and is playing and singing in heaven. Gone way too soon. *Prayers for Gary’s wife and family.*
RIP Gary.
Obituary and service at Clavin info
A mass for Gary is at OLA on Friday morning. They are also having the mass online here.
At Salty Dog, a song that Gary loved to sing was played in his honor.

Gary Gilroy was remembered by his friends at The Canny Brothers Summer Concert – see here. Gary sometimes played with the Canny Brothers.

August 18, 2021Dyker Heights Fireman Remembered

Fourteen years ago, the Deutsche Bank fire happened at 130 Liberty Street in Manhattan.
Joe Graffagnino, a courageous firefighter from Dyker Heights, ran in the building to save people. He and another fireman were trapped in the building fire and died.
A few years ago, Joe’s Father wrote a book about it. (See here)

The Uniformed Firefighters remember Officer Graffagnino every year – see here. And here as well.

August 18, 2021Lock Your Doors Dyker Heights

Handle surfers (idiots who walk by your car, pull the handle and get in and rob the cob) were on 79th Street between 11th and 12th Avenue yesterday.
They ransacked and stole items in the cars – so make sure to doublecheck that you locked your car door before you head into your house.

August 18, 2021CareCube in Bay Ridge Was Reported to NY Attorney General for Fees for Covid Tests

Regular COVID tests (PCR tests) are supposed to be free in NYC. (On 8/18, President Biden said Covid tests are free)
Some people who went to CareCube for a PCR test on 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge have received a bill for $100.00 months after taking the test. (See article)
People thought they were billed for a rapidtest and called CareCube to report the billing error. They were told they were charged for an office visit and the PCR test. CareCube said people have to pay for a pre-test assessment before giving the swab test.
Now, Leticia James, NY Attorney General will be investigating this.
