August 28, 2021Gounardes’ Response to Two Deaths is to Bring in the Street Safety Taskforce For a Photo

A woman and a child have died in two separate accidents in our area this week.
Senator Gounardes didn’t take any action after two deaths in our community now.
Instead, Gounardes tweeted that he will bring the Street Safety Taskforce back! If you recall, that’s the group that didn’t want their photo taken and haven’t done anything about street safety in our area. (See here)
Senator Gounardes is playing politics on our area. We’ve seen other politicians use the word “taskforce” and many people are fooled into believing something is being done. (See here)

Our area also had the “unity taskforce” that met once a year for breakfast and politicians used to say “they met with the unity taskforce” but the taskforce wasn’t doing anything all year to work on issues.

August 28, 2021Kathy Hochul Made Changes Her First Week

I loved that Governor Kathy Hochul took office and went to work to help people.
One of her first groups to help was small business owners. Many businesses really need it as the pandemic left them in bad shape. http://nysmallbusinessrecovery.com will allow small businesses to apply for recovery grants. We should have seen our local NYC government assist better with this.
The other big thing Governor Hochul did was to take the burden off of families who have been hurt by the pandemic and can’t make their rent. Tenants can apply for relief and be protected from eviction. She also said she was going to add 100 additional staff members so that people could receive assistance filling out the forms. That’s letting people and families know they are important.

August 27, 2021Brooklyn Roots Is Opening in Bay Ridge 10/19

Great News!
Brooklyn Roots will be opening at 8620 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge this Fall (in Tuscany Grill’s spot – it’s closing in mid-September – see announcement).
Some of the people that work at Tuscany Grill will work at Brooklyn Roots!!

The owner of Brooklyn Roots, Thomas Perrone is from Bay Ridge. His food is outstanding. Click here to see pictures.
Years ago, I had a lot of nonna’s coming to a party. I asked a friend who I should have cater the party. She told me about Thomas Perrone’s Catering. The Nonna’s kept me asking me where the food was from, even months later!
What should you get at Brooklyn Roots? Sunday Sauce when it’s available. If you are Italian, you know how good this is. If you are not Italian and you probably think this is just pasta with some beef or sausage in the sauce – it’s not just that! Order it – it’s amazing!

Brooklyn Roots’ chicken marsala is so tender, the Matty Guns Special is delicious and the mini rice balls that the Nonnas loved.
This place is going to be very popular in Bay Ridge because Thomas knows how to cook well!
Congratulations Thomas Perrone!!

August 27, 2021RIP Chumei Pan

Around 10:00 am this morning , Chumei Pan was killed by a vehicle while crossing the street on 16th Avenue and 85th Street. (Article here)
A 36-year-old man driving a large, white 2021 Dodge Ram pick-up truck hit Chumei. The paper said he remained at the scene and was not arrested. We heard that he was arrested later. Penalties for drivers causing the death of another individual need to be more severe. His license should be revoked.
She was 69-years old and shouldn’t have died while walking around near her home. Prayers for Chumei’s family.
This is the second accident in Dyker Heights this year and no one did anything to make any changes to the area. Most politicians only mentioned the accident with the little girl. We need new leaders for this area. We should have seen leaders take action….and want to take action.

August 27, 2021A Child’s Death is Not a Time for Politics and the Media. It’s a Time for Action!

A driver not obeying the rules of the road is what killed a little girl in Dyker Heights. It’s that simple.
I wish there was something we could do for Tamy’s mother. She is heartbroken and devastated.
This community has already asked politicians to make the roads safer and they have failed to do so. They continue to play politics on the topic.
We don’t need cameras or tickets – we need politicians who will take IMMEDIATE action for the community they represent!
1) Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said he mourned the little girl and stated the obvious traffic problem in Dyker Heights, but he didn’t do anything to change the law today.

Williams lives two miles from the accident and should have used his Public Advocate position to DO SOMETHING TODAY to say that girl’s life mattered and every child in the community matters.
YES TODAY. Children are the most important thing in this community.
Today means that the people representing the area were ready to take action.

There have been many accidents in this area and unsafe driving continues to be ignored. We repeat the cycle: accident, press-release and then nothing. We need preventative measures.

2) Danny Harris from TransAlt blamed the size of the vehicle. The type of vehicle didn’t matter – the driver pulled into the wrong lane and drove. Also, the driver continued driving when the pedestrians had the light. (See here)
While Harris isn’t a politician, he likes to speak into our community. Please step back Transalt. This is the second time a vehicle’s weight has been questioned in an accident in our community (when it’s people not obeying existing laws)

If a person drives a vehicle and is caught speeding by a police officer, they will receive points on their license. The same has to happen with the red light cameras. If cars are caught by cameras and receive a ticket, drivers will change or lose their right to drive.
3) Tonight, Eric Adams was at the memorial. Why didn’t Adams ask the press to leave? Being a leader means you speak up and do what you want done for your family. Why have politicians published photos of a grieving mother on social media? That is not acceptable! No cameras should be out while people grieve.
4) Senator Andrew Gounardes failed to be accountable to Brooklyn. Gounardes spent a lot of time pushing bills for more speed cameras and to lower the speed limit. Speed cameras are money collectors and people who speed past these lights don’t care. Politicians proved that getting tickets doesn’t change driving. (Justin Brannan, Brad Lander and Jumaane Williams)
What needs to be changed in the law? Many people won’t like it – but it is necessary. Vehicles with more than 10 moving violations in a year, should not be able to be registered.

This year, we saw Senator Gounardes was not able to speak out against Councilman Brannan for speeding. Politics came before the community. Gounardes’ bills and those in the NYS senate do not hold people accountable. Changing the speed limit would not have helped here because the driver wasn’t obeying the rules.
A resident in our community tried to hold Gounardes accountable. Gounardes’ response to her is not acceptable! (See here) The senator is not committed to this community. He is pushing bills for PACs before safety. (See here)

We talked about this on 3rd Avenue tonight. Someone asked, “What if my son gets a lot of speeding tickets with my car, then I won’t be able to drive? The answer: Your son won’t get that many tickets because you won’t let him use your car like that. If you realized you could lose your right to drive, then your attitude towards driving would change.

People who have more than 10 moving movie violations should not be able to renew their license for a year. Penalties need to be serious, so people take the roads seriously. Justin Brannan received 16 tickets from the cameras (See here) His should have received a stronger penalty because the tickets weren’t deterring him from speeding.
5) Peter Abbate is the Assemblyman for this area. Why hasn’t he done anything about the traffic issues?
6) Councilman Brannan can not discuss driving, as he is part of the driving problem in this community. Other politicians should have asked him to take a back seat on this, but they aren’t able to speak candidly with him.
* Anyone talking about more red light cameras isn’t telling you about the lobbyists that are pushing for red light cameras. Please see the NYC Lobbyist Database (Info here) *
We need the law changed immediately so that safety in NYC matters to people. Getting points will matter to everyone. Their driving will matter to them and they will be more careful if they want to continue driving in NY.
