January 25, 2022Gohan Sushi Restaurant Opened on 86th Street

Gohan Sushi opened at 533 – 86th Street in Bay Ridge. It’s between the Spectrum store and Fire Kebob Retaurant.
Gohan means “meal” in Japanese.
This is an Omakase sushi restaurant. I pronounced it wrong and made a Ridgite laugh….so Omakase is said like: oh-ma-ka-say. The chef makes several courses of sushi and customizes to your preference.

They are already on Seamless here.

Swirl Fun Frozen Yogurt shop was in this location. It closed two months before Covid-19 (See here)

86 Exotic Shop opened at 557 – 86th Street. Their sign says they sell exotic snacks and CBD.
You don’t want to miss the leaves on the side of their sign.

There were hookah pipes in the window.
A mini mart used to be at this location.

There are so many empty shops on 86th Street, so if you like CBD – go get some from this shop.

January 25, 2022Speak Out, Speak Up on Saturday – Safety and The New Homeless Shelter Coming to Sunset Park – January 29, 2022

The Asian Community has been banning together because they are tired of the government not responding to keep people safe.
Now a homeless shelter is being forced on 7th Avenue in their community without any input.
They attended the meetings and they were told this is a done deal.
Assemblyman Peter Abbate was the only politician standing with the Asian Community (remember that when it’s time to vote).

January 25, 2022R Train is a Traveling Hotel for the Homeless
If @agounardes ever makes it downstairs onto the actual train in his own district when he campaigns for re-election, he MIGHT see the state of the subway. Today I ONLY saw 8 or 9 people who had to turn to the subway for warmth & shelter

When is enough, enough? pic.twitter.com/f0u6xMDWPv
The R train has become home to many homeless people as the temperatures dip.
Politicians, who campaign in that subway aren’t doing anything to help the homeless in our area. Lobbyists, political pacs and real estate developers are much more exciting to politicians. Our area needs leaders who want to house these people who are down on their luck and not doing well.

January 24, 2022Covid Tests on 8th Avenue and 60th Street

When I saw the NYC Health and Hospitals sign over this storefront on 8th Avenue and 60th Street, I was kind of sad. The store was a cute gift shop before Covid.

Years ago, this location and the storefront next to it were home to one of the first Arabic stores in the area. The sold fresh spices, cheese and great bread. And then I remembered the olives – they were so good! The place was very clean and the people who worked there was so nice.

January 24, 2022RIP Peter Killan – A Man Who Spent His Life Helping Other People

I was sorry to hear that Peter Killen had died.
He was 84 years old and a very nice man. I hadn’t seen him in a long time due to Covid. Prior to Covid, I saw him everywhere in Bay Ridge. He love this community.

Peter was involved in so many groups in Bay Ridge. He was part of the Men’s Club of Bay Ridge, the Bay Ridge Lions Club and the Bay Ridge Chapter of the AARP. Peter was involved with many local groups. He was on BRAVO’s Board of Directors.

A few years ago, I had chance to talk to him after he served as a moderator for a debate. (See here) While political people were all a flutter in Bay Ridge, a silly debate wasn’t a big deal to Killian.
Killian spent his life helping other people. He was a retired NYPD Detective and worked many of those years at the 68th Precinct. He was also a US Army veteran.
RIP Peter Killian. Prayers for his Peter’s family.
